Five Things We Learned In Corrie This Week

(This post was originally posted by Scott Willison on the Coronation Street Blog in January 2018, reposted to this blog with permission.)

The Rovers Return continues to defy physics.  The Rovers Return, famously, cannot exist.  The living room should be halfway into Rosamund Street, the toilets are in Ken Barlow's living room, and there seem to be about fourteen bedrooms upstairs even before Peter finishes his loft conversion.  This week we got yet another twist on its Escher-like architecture: the staircase that turns left on the landing, not right, meaning you'll somehow end up outside the back of the pub, floating above the yard.  Perhaps it enters another dimension, where you reach that secret flat Steve and Michelle lived in for about six months in 2008?  (My apologies to Georgia Taylor, incidentally, for picking a screengrab where it looks like she's auditioning to play the Joker.  I just needed a picture of the wall).

Todd is on the run... for some reason.  The mess of trying to accommodate Todd's sudden departure rumbles on, as he apparently punched a policeman and legged it into some woods, leaving Summer to just wander off.  I can't even remember why he vanished in the first place, but I am enjoying the convoluted nonsense the writers are having to spin to try and explain why he doesn't just come home.  It hasn't quite reached the utter insanity of when they had to cover for Sharif's disappearance (remember that?  When they filled the gap in the plotlines by having Maria accused of murdering her lesbian stalker, except she was hiding in her stair cupboard, or something?) but there's still plenty of time.  Perhaps Todd got abducted by elves in that wood, or he's secretly an alien.  I'm looking forward to a shoddy caption telling us he died on his way back to his home planet.

Tassels used to be an Italian restaurant.  The ongoing "Bethany as a lapdancer" storyline continues to frustrate.  If everyone hates her doing it so much, why don't they just report the club to the police for employing an underage stripper?  She'll be sacked and won't be able to get a job anywhere else until she's 18 and that'll be the end of it.  This line of attack didn't even seem to occur to her policeman boyfriend.  Meanwhile, the rules of what you can show before the watershed mean that this filthy sexpit seems to be nothing more than Nick's Bistro except with a stage for a woman to do sub-Legs & Co shimmying in a BHS basque.  Thank heavens for Audrey livening it up, then, who as the Street's resident lush couldn't pass up another opportunity to get hammered and started knocking back the bottles of wine before lunch.  She was mad keen to visit Tassels purely because she's been barred from all the other pubs in town for being drunk and disorderly.  Not content with turning her daughter into an author (Dancer!, with an exclamation mark to make it sexy, now available for pre-order on Amazon), Audrey also revealed that Bethany's stripper name (Madison) is the same as Claudia Colby's Alsation.  She then reminisced at length through an overpriced chardonnay haze about how Tassels was once Angelo's... or maybe Figaro's.  It was apparently the first place she had a courgette, which is appropriate, because I'm sure there's still a lot of courgette swallowing going on backstage even today.

Webster's Garage is not known for its professionalism.  The very best place to hold a job interview is definitely outside.  In a pub back yard.  In January.  Josh should get the job just for managing to form a coherent sentence through chattering teeth.  Leaving that aside, I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to ask a potential employee "boxers or briefs?"  Inquiring about the underwear of applicants is the kind of behaviour that leads to sexual harassment suits and slaps across the face.

Cooking inspiration can strike at any time.  Yes, Gail's corned beef sandwich was one of the saddest meals ever served in the show.  But Sarah-Lou's decision to make her a lasagne - from scratch, using ingredients she had to go out and buy - means that poor Mrs Rodwell is going to be sitting there with a rumbling tummy for at least another hour.  She'll be gobbling up the discarded baby food from Harry's high chair tray before Sarah's even finished the white sauce.

The truth about the kitchen in The Rovers Return

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog January 2018, reposted to this blog with permission.)

There's an awful lot of rubbish being printed online today about the kitchen at The Rovers Return on Coronation Street.

Headlines such as these today...

BIRTH OF HOTPOTS Coronation Street’s secret Rovers Return kitchen finally revealed
(The Sun)

REVEALED! Coronation Street viewers finally get to see the mysterious Rovers kitchen
(The Mirror)

.. are being repeated all over the internet. And why? Because last night we had a scene set in the kitchen at The Rovers Return.

Here's the kitchen back in the day when Alec Gilroy worked in the pub.

Admittedly, we don't see the kitchen at The Rovers as much as we see other parts of the pub, but we do see it regularly enough to know that it's there. It's not exactly mysterious and it's hardly secret, is it? And we have seen it more often than the tabloids report - forty years since we've seen it, they're saying today. No, I don't think so.

That's why this Coronation Street fan is so amused - and confused - that the tabloids are choosing to write about it. Have I missed something, here?

(edited to add: No, No you've not missed something. My favourite comic scene took place in that kitchen, and it relates to that last photo above with the kitchen health inspector. Read about Alec Gilroy and the Boris the Mexican Mouse Eating Spider right here, with video proof!)

Corrie Exec Producer Kieran Roberts given send-off on the Street

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog January 2018, reposted to this blog with permission.)

With apologies for the lack of quality in the picture above, as I took it with my phone during Coronation Street last night.

Did you spot Kieran Roberts, Corrie's Executive Producer, in the show last night? It was a real 'blink and you'll miss it' moment but a very special one at that.

Pat Phelan acknowledged Kieran, posing as an extra on the set, when Kieran walked past him on the Street. 'Hope you have a good holiday, Kieran,' Pat told him to which the Exec Producer replied 'Thanks, Pat.'

It was a lovely thing to do, I felt, because back in October last year it was announced that Kieran Roberts would be stepping down as Executive Producer of Coronation Street after 16 years at the helm.  You can read more on that here.

As yet, his successor has not been announced.

Good luck to you, Mr. Roberts, in whatever you do next.  And have a good holiday, too.

Corrie Canada Weekly Awards Jan. 29 - Feb. 2

Costume win: Loved Gemma's balloons, Brian appropriately dressed as a chicken (or rooster in which case, you can make your own mind up), Liz as Queen Elizabeth I was great. There were a few other really good costumes on the extras, too!

Denial isn't a River in Egypt: Gemma must realize Henry's reactions to her are lukewarm at best so I can only deduce that she just doesn't want to see the truth.

Musical Ambiance: "Fever" in the pub when Eva's agonizing over the pregnancy and Adam with Shona.

Fashion fail: Liz hasn't been castigated for her fashion choices for awhile but what the heck was she wearing? Shiny leggings and a duo layer filmy tunic?

Rod Serling award: Peter is confronted by all of his women, all laughing together. He probably thinks he's in the Twilight Zone. Or maybe he's just seen the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?

Feminist award: Toyah's University fancy dress costume of a fish riding a bicycle refers, of course, to the old saying "A woman needs a man like fish needs a bicycle"

Soap cliche award: There's always an obligatory outburst in the courtroom, either during testimony or at the verdict. Faye, this time, screaming her mother's innocence while Anna shrieks her agreement. She's not Deirdre but it was typical Anna.

Lines of the week:
Lawyer "Sing a little tune in your head" Anna "What would you suggest? 'I Want To Break Free'?" (good one!)
Toyah "With Carla back on the scene, I need to get used to being surrounded by Peter's exes"
Michelle to Peter "Oh calm down, it's not the Witches of Eastwick" (no, it's the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse!)
Peter "Sarah. Get a mop"
Tim "I never did live down those leiderhosen" (brain bleach, please)
Peter "It's been a long time since I've been up at 3 a.m. with a (baby) bottle in me hand" (I don't think you ever were. Lucy took Simon away from Peter almost at birth)
Toyah about her fancy dress costume "I went as a fish riding a bicycle" Gemma...stunned..."Did you take a lot of drugs in uni, then?"
Cathy re Fancy Dress "Should you go slutty-stylish or full on ridiculous?"
Amy "This is so unfair. You buy her a trip to Paris and you don't even care if I get abducted!"
Eva "Toyah I can't have the baby you wanted!" (ouch)

A Love Letter to Coronation Street

(This post was originally posted by Stevie Dawson on the Coronation Street Blog in December 2017, reposted to this blog with permission.)

Dear Coronation Street,

I loved you from the very beginning. Back when the world was black and white. Before I was born actually, but I caught up.

As I learned more about you, you made me smile and cry in equal measure.

At times, you shocked me.

Seriously disappointed me.

Broke me.

Made me question whether I really loved you. I lost interest at times.

You taught me lessons about life.

And death.

You turned your back on me quite a few times.

But you always came back.

You reminded me of home. We're from similar sides of the track.

And you made me remember holidays past. Good times.

We’ve been through some ups and downs but I keep coming back. I hope you value my dedication. I know we can never really fully satisfy each other. And I'm sure you’ll probably be looking for someone younger now. But don’t forget about me. I’m still here. Remembering the good old days.

Here’s to rekindling our Corrie love in 2018.

(P.S. My friends keep telling me to end things with you. I never will).

@StevieDawson
