Faye Brookes Interview: #Kana - and Sophie moving in

What’s the current situation with Kate and Rana?

They are not speaking and Kate is with Sophie which everyone thinks is a rebound. Kate is not seeing it as a rebound but she feels like if she was to lead Sophie down the wrong path she might be breaking her heart so she is keeping her distance because she knows her true feelings are for Rana.

How does Kate feel when Phelan tells them that they need to find a new tenant for Luke’s room?

Kate thinks of the panic of having rent to pay and they don’t want to get in trouble with their landlord so they need to fill that room. Kate offers it to Craig because he needs a place to live. They are all moving on; Kate checks in with Alya to see if she is alright about it and she is so it is not like there is pressure. It is more about that they are really letting go of Luke now by letting someone come and live in his room but it is also the next step. 

Tell us what happens when Zeedan suggests that Sophie should move in.

Kate is frustrated and doesn’t think it is a good idea. She doesn’t want to hurt Sophie’s feelings. She knows that they need to take their time and that’s a really nice way of moving forward and actually letting their relationship go its natural course by not rushing because Kate does keep rushing in to relationships.

How do you think Zeedan pushing Sophie towards Kate will impact Kate and Rana?

Kate is using Sophie and that is harsh. Sophie has got such a soft spot for Kate and Kate can see it and is taking advantage of that. So when Kate knows that Rana can see that they are together and she is getting jealous, it is only fuelling that fire -  Kate is totally leading Sophie down a wrong path. She knows that she need to come clean sooner rather than later.

With Sophie obviously smitten, is Kate aware of the extent of Sophie’s feelings for her?

Kate is similar to Sophie in that she wears her heart on her sleeve and I like that you always know what you’re going to get with Sophie Webster. Kate starts to see that she’s taking her down a misleading path and she doesn’t want to send out mixed messages.

How do you think Kate will handle having two women fighting for her affection?

She doesn’t realise that she’s got two women fighting for her because her feelings are so strong for Rana. Kate doesn’t realise her effect on people and Kate doesn’t have that self-worth that every girl should have. 

Zeedan seems to have taken a self-destructive path and Kate sees him trying to apologise to Leanne. What does Kate make of this?

Kate sees that they are arguing in the street and she is with Carla at the time so the pair of them think the worst because they can tell that Leanne is really upset as she storms off. Zeedan and Leanne have a really good relationship so for them to be arguing something has got to have happened.

How do you think Zeedan will react if Kate and Rana were to continue their relationship?

I don’t think he has a leg to stand on because the pair of them want to be together no matter what!

The fan reaction to Kate and Rana has been huge… How are you enjoying this story line?

We are so overwhelmed but we are so grateful at the same time. We spoke about this relationship before it was on screen for months, the planning with the writers, the talking with the producers. We knew it was going to be a real hard story to tell and I cannot get over the support that we have had so I can only be thankful and I love the fact that they love me more because I’m with Rana. With all of these characters on Coronation Street, all you want to be is loved, so the fact that we have our own fandom, we appreciate the time that they take to make edits and they even come up with their own predictions for the future. We tease them all the time!

How are you enjoying watching the storyline play out?

I’m just really proud because we have all worked really hard on it and we are giving those people a voice, we’re telling a real story that is so relatable and it’s a game changer. I do think we’re doing something that’s quite historical for Coronation Street.

This storyline is obviously very complex and involves the subjects of both sexuality and religion, do you feel like there’s an added pressure to do it justice?

Definitely and more so for Bhavna as an actress. We were worried about the reaction and that people weren’t going to accept the idea about this new relationship but because they’ve received it so well and I know that it’s only a positive thing and it can only get better. The pressure is from me wanting to do a good job. We are both straight women playing those characters so we’re just giving truth to everything we do with it. Love is love and that’s the message across all boards. We don’t need to even think about any other factors, it’s down to a feeling and down to happiness and two people just falling for one another. It’s what Corrie always has - it has heart.

What has it been like working with Bhavna Limbachia and Brooke Vincent?

Brooke cracks me up every day, I know she’s always going to have an amazing story to tell me that’s literally going to have me belly laughing. She’s so comfortable at Corrie because she’s been here since she was so young and so she has a real natural ability and I soak that up when I’m with her. Bhavna works just as hard as I do as an actress so she has the work ethic. We constantly bounce off each other with new ideas. We have to kiss a lot so to be comfortable with her is really important and I can’t take that for granted.

Brooke Vincent on Sophie, #Kana and Dancing on Ice

Brooke Vincent, who plays Sophie Webster in Coronation Street, was interviewed on ITV's Loose Women today about her move from the street to the skating rink. Brooke will be starring in Dancing on Ice which begins this coming Sunday on ITV.

She talks to Loose Women about the training for Dancing on Ice which is proving difficult as she's been covered in bruises from falling over all the time.

Brooke also talks about taking a break from Corrie to do Dancing on Ice. She mentioned that her character Sophie goes after Kate, but can't understand why Kate isn't as struck on this idea as Sophie is. Obviously, we know that Kate is after Rana, but Sophie is none the wiser.

With Rosie and Sophie reaching the dizzy career heights of window washing, it's time to take a look back at some of the characters from Corrie's past who have taken to window cleaning.

First off was Stanley Ogden.

Followed by Eddie Yeats.

And of course, the king of the chamois cloth, Jack Duckworth, who saw a lot through those bedroom windows he cleaned, especially Dulcie Froggatt's.

Then Graham Proctor.

Then Tim announced to Sally that he was intending to get himself a career that would take him to some dizzy heights, it was clear there was only one way he could go.  For a feckless fella on Coronation Street, there can only ever be one profession of choice - a Weatherfield window cleaner.

Rosie and Sophie reunited - how are they doing so far?

Since Rosie's return to the cobbles, she has received a mixed reception from viewers. We had better get used to her though, as she is to stay longer than her initial three month contract. One question that remains unanswered though, is why is she here? After her glamorous modelling life in Miami, she must have realised that Weatherfield. and even Manchester, may not offer the same opportunities. Another question that springs to mind, is, was she really so stupid as to agree to Antoine's request to take a package for him across the pond. How naïve she must be or is there a darker story line to be revealed here? She will be 27 this year so youth is fast losing any credibility as an excuse.

But Rosie can be irritating and, of course, that is part of her character.  She channels a kind of helpless female shtick, which I don't find very appealing. No offence to ladies who are reading this, but a pet hate of mine is women and girls, in fact anyone in pink. Rosie has been wearing a pink garment for a while and is carrying a rather unsavoury looking fluffy pink handbag round with her.

In the pub, with new squeeze Adam, she was sharing her concerns about the cocaine and even told Adam where she had buried it. I wonder why. Anyway, clutching her head in dramatic fashion, she mentioned how she would be unable to survive prison. Turns out it was the food that she was objecting to and that she feared they would not have heard of coconut oil. Poor love!

I wonder how long the Adam and Rosie romance will last. These two complement each other in some ways. Both are very much into their appearance and seem to have a good deal of misplaced self-confidence - Adam more so than Rosie. His self-satisfied smug expression along with his scheming and wheeling and dealing, and his exam cheating, all combine to make him lacking in any obvious redeeming feature.

Sophie is the sensible one of the Webster siblings and maybe it is her Christianity which helps her to forgive and tolerate her sister. I'm pleased that for now at least, Sophie has some time as a young single person. Since Maddie's death, she has not been involved in a relationship though not so long ago it looked almost certain that Sophie and Kate would be pushed together, especially as things were not going well between Kate and Caz.

Sophie has some admirable qualities and one of them is her willingness to accept when she is in the wrong or responsible for a problem. She accepts that her dad's garage problems are her fault in part,for not having taken out travel insurance. Sophie is a doer and having told her dad she is resigning from the garage, she seizes the opportunity to take on Tim's window- cleaning round. I admire too her feminist stance. Explaining to her dad that she will be window cleaning, he expresses surprise. Rosie warns him. 'Why not? Be careful, be very careful.' Good on you, Sophie.

Sisters Reunited: Brooke Vincent reveals her part in Helen Flanagan's return to Corrie

During last week's Weatherfield visit Stevie Dawson sat down with a cup of tea and some sandwiches in the Rovers with Brooke Vincent, who is returning to Coronation Street after a short stint in the theatre. Here's what she had to share:

Can you talk us through how Sophie returns?

It’s quite a funny scene actually, she gets out of the car and says hello to everybody and they see all these cases in the road, and then Rosie appears. So I bring her back with me. It’s a surprise for everybody else.

What’s it like having Helen Flanagan back?

It’s good, we’ve been messing about! Even though I was only away for a short time it’s nice to come back with somebody and me and Helen have obviously known each other for a very long time, she’s great, she’s good to have back. We are a bit like how our characters are written, we are very different.

Did you two stay in touch when she was away and what was your reaction when she said she’s coming back?

Well we stayed in touch but we didn’t get chance to see each other very often. As for coming back, I kind of had a conversation with her before I was leaving and she said I’d love to come back so I kind of told Kate (Oates) and then that was the last I heard of it. Then she rang me and I’d heard something so I asked her if she was coming back and she said yes darling Kate rang me and I was like oh that’s good then!

Kevin’s going through a bit of a tough patch at the moment with the garage but the Websters have always seemed to stick together. And Tim hasn’t met Rosie yet, so what’s the new dynamic like and how will that continue?

It’s like my mum having this daughter and then she comes in like a whirlwind, and that’s basically what Rosie is. Tim obviously has Sally who’s completely different to Sophie who’s completely different to Rosie so I think – obviously Joe (Duttine) loves Helen but character-wise I don’t think they know yet where they stand. But it is funny to watch.

What does Helen Flanagan bring to the show, as a person?

I don’t know whether I’m going to describe this very well (everyone laughs) but we had a scene the other day, and because she’s funny, she’s flouncing about and she’s a very ditzy character, and you’ve got me and Sally and Kevin who can be quite serious, it gives it different levels. It’s what families are. I’ve missed having her around, we did grow up together. It’s really nice to see Helen really happy and settled.

We know that Rosie brings trouble with her, how does Sophie react when she realises there’s sh*t going on?

Sophie doesn’t suspect anything, and neither does Rosie. You can tell because of how different the characters are and how differently we react, that the same situation wouldn’t have happened if it was Sophie living in the US. Rosie was always going to be trouble, but she’s away with the faries so doesn’t realise how much trouble we are in.

What reason do they give for coming back?

I was always coming back and Rosie misses Weatherfield.

Rachel Newton: I think later we realise for Rosie that life isn’t what it’s cracked up to be and things haven’t really worked out that well.

Did you ever think about permanently leaving Corrie?

No. Because of doing it from such a young age, you see this as normal. When it came up for me to do a play, it was nice to be able to do that and come back. This is like my home. Hopefully in a few years I’ll maybe go and do it again.

Do you think doing live theatre has improved you as an actor?

You’d have to ask other people! It’s very different. What I learned is that I actually know quite a lot about TV work, which I never thought I did I thought I just breezed through life. I used to constantly change myself because of a camera being there, or adjust another person or stand in a certain way. So hopefully I am a bit better.

If you did want a change, what would be the first thing you would look at doing?

Ummm, well I really enjoyed radio, because I could be me. I had more input in it. (Brooke guest presented on Key103).

Rosie is probably going to dominate most of the storylines now you are back, do you know what’s coming up for you, in terms of relationships or do you have any inkling of any upcoming storylines?

No I’ve not seen Kate (Oates) yet but I’m quite happy just being with Helen for now. As much as se says I’m her safety blanket she’s kind of mine too. When we were growing up she took a lot of the brunt of fame and I learned from her. I’m not in a rush to say I want my character to be doing ‘this’.

Do you hope they re-explore the Sophie and Kate dynamics?

I didn’t mind that storyline. For me personally, I get very arsey about this, but I think because I’m lesbian in the show, not everything I do should be about being a lesbian. It doesn’t need to be written about every time I do a scene ‘oh she’s a lesbian’ we are moving forward as a generation and you want it to be normal, we’ve said it and that’s that. There’s more to people than their sexuality. Have I said all that correct? (Everyone laughs).

If Sophie leaves the garage, where would you like her to go?

Well we (Rosie and Sophie) start window cleaning. So we’re like the Chuckle Brothers. I stand there doing all the work, obviously. It’s funny so we’re obviously enjoying playing that.

Be My Baby - a review of the play starring Brooke Vincent

What a treat it was to be at The Lowry in Media City last night to see Be My Baby, a play written by Amanda Whittington and featuring none other than Brooke Vincent who plays Sophie Webster on the cobbles.

If any of you are familiar with The Lowry, the play was staged in The Quays Theatre - relatively small, but which lends itself to a certain intimacy between actors and audience. There was not one spare seat.

The play is an absolute joy: witty, poignant and with some terrific music of the best decade for music - the 60s of course. It is 1964 and  the play opens with the main character, Mary Elizabeth Adams, sitting on the floor of her bedroom, listening to the wonderful Dusty Springfield track  'I Just Don't Know What to do with Myself'  on her portable record player. She is clearly pregnant and about to leave her comfortable middle class home for a stay in a mother and baby home until the baby is born and swiftly adopted. An unmarried mother and a grammar school girl to boot - she must be removed from her education and her home, her condition kept a secret from her father to avoid the shame of what she has done.

Brooke plays the part of Queenie - a tough, streetwise girl, often seen dragging on a fag in order to confirm her coolness, plus the frequent witty retort to the more naïve girls in the home, dreaming of the weddings they will (probably not) have, backed by the Dixie Cups singing 'Going to the Chapel'. It is also revealed that Queenie has been here before, in the same situation and so already has given birth once. Her previous experience of childbirth also helps place Queenie apart from the other girls. She is a girl with a past, a girl who knows the ropes, a veteran at this baby business and is possibly a little embittered at her fate.

The girls in the home are ruled with a rod of iron, wielded by Matron, played brilliantly by Ruth Madoc, of He de Hi fame. She is, as we later discover, a matron with a tender heart but nevertheless keen to avoid sentimentality, and never will she swerve form the fact that the babies, once born, WILL be adopted.

Attitudes of respectability, maintaining appearances, keeping up with the Jones's, trust in the police, the government, the law, the Establishment in short, are all brilliantly conveyed, especially by Mary Adams' mother, the embodiment of respectability and conventionality, who believes no woman is worth her salt unless she can do proper corners on a bed. It may have been the Swinging Sixties in London, but in this unidentified northern town, nothing much was swinging at all.

The title of the play, Be My Baby coincides with the title of the brilliant track by The Ronettes, whose lead singer, Ronnie Spector succeeds in conveying longing and yearning with more than a touch of the innocent belief in the perfection of true love. Though the baby in the song and in the play are different, Ronnie Spector is in with a greater chance of securing her 'baby' than these girls. Heartbreakingly, the girls in the home have no hope of keeping their babies.

Witty, and at times joyful as the play is, the audience is certain to feel relief that the stigma and 'the don't darken my door' attitude towards the girls and their babies born out of wedlock, has been well and truly buried by all, bar, maybe, an oddly and ugly bigoted few.

Sophie Webster's exit storyline revealed from Coronation Street

Brooke Vincent, who plays Sophie Webster in Coronation Street, is now on a three-month absence from work. She's currently starring in a stage play called Be My Baby. 

Our blogger Ruth is attending the show tonight at The Lowry and will be writing a review for fans to read here on the Coronation Street Blog.

As for on-screen Sophie, her absence will be explained as she leaves for Miami.  The Radio Times reveals that Sophie gets a call from sister Rosie, who invites her there for a break.

We'll see Sophie tell Kevin that she's leaving, in the episode to be screened on Friday 14 October.

All the Single Ladies

There are several single ladies at this moment on the cobbles. Some newly single, others have been single for a while. Let’s start with Liz. At one point something seemed to be happening between Amy’s friend’s dad and Liz but that must have fizzled out though I don’t remember when or why.

Her last significant relationship was with Tony and I thought they went well together. Naturally it had to end because of Tony’s deceit and relationship with Tracy. Remember how well Liz tricked Tony and everyone else into thinking she was going to give him another chance? Sheer class from the landlady of The Rovers.

Who is there for Liz? I had wondered about Vinny, the villain. She is attracted to bad boys, is our Liz. Is he with anyone? Even if he was, I cannot see Vinny being morally troubled by a little adultery. Is there anyone else suitable for Liz amongst the current residents? She needs a new arrival. And I don’t mean Leanne’s baby. Odd how she seems more interested in Leanne’s baby than she does Michelle’s. Is that just the natural reaction of human psychology? The one less available becomes the more tantalising?

Some might say that Maria must have had a moment of insanity when she dumped Luke. After all, what is not to like about the tall, dark handsome man? What is going on in Maria’s head? Does she have her heart set on Aidan, after their night of passion? He has made it clear that it was a mistake but Maria did seem a little put out by his rather ungallant attitude in making it clear that it was indeed just that and nothing more – a mistake. Maybe there will be a follow up after all.

Sarah has been single since her relationship with Callum and has been very delicate mentally since his death and Harry’s birth. She now seems to be getting stronger and there is a certain Gary Windass who may well ask Sarah out. Gary and Izzy’s time is done and they have agreed to take Care of Jake as best they can, despite their not being together. Sarah and Gary? I think that could work. We’ve already seen Izzy watching the 2 of them talking. Will Izzy find someone else too?

Mary now feels that she is nothing short of an expert on broken hearts after her fling with married cheat and ghost hunter Brendan. She has taken on her woman of the world role with great gusto, thereby producing further comedic moments for the massively talented Patti Clare.

But the question is - who will be Mary’s next love object? There has been speculation that a new man will arrive on the cobbles and that love develops after friendship. I hope It’s true. I’d love her to find a decent man but not at the cost of a reduction of eccentricity.

Tracy has been single for a while since her split with Robert. Is it possible that the 2 of them will reconcile? At the moment it seems unlikely, though who knows what set of circumstances the writers will create to put them back together. To be with Tracy is not an experience for the faint hearted and there is no sign of an orderly queue forming at her door.

Since Gary and Alya split over her night with Jason, Alya has not had a romantic attachment. Alya is beautiful, intelligent and ambitious – in short a good catch. However, she may well be enjoying her life as a working single woman and contrary to what many believe it is possible to lead a fulfilling life without a significant other.

Are Rana and Zeedan back on? Why was Rana so cagey as to why she didn’t want her parents to show up for the Nazirs anniversary do?

Gemma, a definite marmite character, had a fling with Jason, and we saw from that Gemma’s lack of confidence, despite her general gobbiness. She did reveal a while ago that she loved Callum, but it wasn’t crystal clear as to her meaning. Was it romantic love she felt or strong friendship?

Caz, Kate and Sophie are all currently single. Caz has clearly developed feelings for Maria, but there’s no chance those 2 would work as Maria is into men. Kate and Sophie, who are also single, appear to enjoy each other’s company so maybe after Brooke Vincent finishes her theatre run, Kate and Sophie will get together.

If Audrey and Ken are going to get together they are taking their time about it. Does she prefer Freddie? And there was that rather elegant looking silver haired woman in the Bistro…

Rita, I believe, is not looking for romance but you can never say never. How satisfying it would be if Queen Rita could meet her king and reign on the cobbles together. If someone did come along, he would have to be worth his weight in gold.

Caz - your time is up! Please pack your kit and leave

Yes, you Caz - it is now your time to depart the cobbles. There, that's told her. Now, let me explain why she has to go.

Caz Hammond, who arrived in November last year, has no further reason to remain in Weatherfield. Kate has told her, in no uncertain terms, that she doesn't want to see her any more and that she no longer loves her.  No doubt though, Caz is living in hope that Kate will change her mind, fall in love with her again and they'll get married. It seems unlikely.

Caz has lied repeatedly about her parachute training accident and hobbled around for several months trying to maintain the lie. Both viewers and Kate have now discovered, due to the arrival of the army's representative, who spoke of the forthcoming court martial, that Caz sustained the injury due to a fight. She is due to attend a court martial concerning the incident. According to Caz,  desperate for excuses, the girl she fought was making homophobic comments and so Caz tore into her. Hmmm.

Luke is not at all happy about the fact that Caz is staying at Maria's flat and he has made his feelings more than clear to Maria: 'She's a nutter!'

When Liam was playing with his toy car it ran over Caz's ankle, but Caz reacted as if a truck had run over her foot and not just a child's toy. Luke then informs Maria that he found a painkiller Caz claimed to need, down the sink. No wonder then that Luke is intolerant of Caz's presence. Sophie is also a good deal less than convinced about Caz's parachute training accident.  Maria has been told, in no uncertain terms, that Caz is playing her, but Maria refuses to listen and is all sympathy, telling Caz that she can stay in her flat as long as she needs, to sort herself out.

In the Rovers, Kylie's killer, Clayton, was pestering Kate. Caz, seeing red, rounded on him and fought him off. A good deed in itself but one which clearly revealed that her ankle was perfectly fine. Caz did try to ham it up a bit when she realised she had given the game away, but it was too late. Kate, shortly afterwards gives Caz her marching orders (bit of a pun there!). Caz wails, 'You're all I care about, all I've got left. She adds, 'My love life's in tatters and my career is hanging by a thread!'

What we don't yet know is almost anything about Caz's background. Might there be a clue in her past life which would explain why she seems so deeply troubled? If so, it would be interesting to find out.

Sadly, the relationship between Kate and Caz, in my view, failed to convince. This is not a criticism of each individual actor, just a comment on how some screen relationships don't quite hit the mark of credibility. Much of their time together, unfortunately, appeared forced and contrived.

Five Coronation Street characters I could live without

There are certain characters, at certain times in the life of Coronation Street, that I'm more than willing to give  a chance to.  I want to warm to them. I want to like them. I try my hardest, damn it, I really do try.

But there are some characters that despite trying as hard as I can, I have to admit defeat and give up on. Whether you agree or disagree, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Here are my personal top five Corrie characters I could very well do without right now.

Rana.  What's she there for other than to get Zeedan all hot and bothered? 

Sharif. His chickens are more interesting than he is.

Sinead is a ditzy bit of fluff, and as such, a soap staple. Every soap has one and Corrie needs one, but for heavens sake, give her a storyline before I fall asleep. And break up her and Chesney, it's a relationship without chemistry. Dullsville with a capital Zzzz.

Is there anything likable, at all, about Caz? I can't see it if there is. Get rid, please and let Kate Connor breathe.

And I'm sorry to say this as I've watched Sophie grow up on Coronation Street, but her whining and moaning now define her.  I'm hoping that after actress Brooke Vincent takes a break from the show to star in a stage play, she'll be written out with a bombshell and come back with a new dynamic storyline to boot.

There you go.  Ooh, I don't half feel better now that's all off my chest.

Coronation Street contracts extended for two stars

Antony Cotton has had his contract extended to play Sean Tully in Coronation Street for at least another year.  He announced this on twitter. 

The Sun today says that Brooke Vincent, who plays Sophie Webster, has signed a new contract which will keep her in the show until February 2017.

Brooke will be taking a break from Coronation Street later this year to star in a play called Be My Baby.

She'll be playing 19-year-old young mum  Mary Adams in the play which will run at Manchester’s Lowry Theatre.  Find out more here.
