Sunday Comments August 11

Hayley's got quite a battle facing her. Operation and chemotherapy. And still the odds are not very good. Only 1 in 5 survive it. I bet she wished Carla had waited for her. She looked quite dumbstruck coming out of the hospital, as you would yet she went back to work and blanked out the wittering of the others until she broke down. It sunk in.  Lovely scene between Hayley and Carla in the office.

Meanwhile, Roy has been feeling chipper and happy and relaxed. Too happy. Soap Law dictates that he must not be too happy but at least be cured of his own problems so he can be there for Hayley. I dreaded watching Hayley go back to the cafe, knowing she had to tell them the hard, sad truth. She hedged a bit, saying that there's a "very good chance of recovery" and Sylvia had to get out of the room. You know when she went upstairs to make tea, she was having a good cry.

Didn't take long for Roy to get up sleepwalking again. Not surprised, really. Now he's throwing himself in to research and finding all the possibilities of healthy diets and is hell bent on protecting her and hovering over her. He's going to drive her round the bend, however well-meaning he is. She has had one procedure and now has to wait for the main op but Roy is far too frantic to wait. He's barging into see the doctor but it wasn't very successful, further frustrating him.

He got so upset and so beside himself that he confronted Hayley in the Bistro and told everyone she was ill, something she wanted to keep to herself for awhile. You could see Fiz turn white with shock. It really turned the evening into a non-party and I'm sure Hayley feels like an object of pity. I did enjoy Roy ripping Tracy a new one. She really deserved it and I wish Fiz had taken her out. Hayley is already having to put up with peole fussing over her and walking on eggshells but so far, she's handling it pretty well.  Poor Roy just doesn't know how to handle Hayley. He thinks he knows what to do and what's best for her but he fails to understand the emotional side of it. Sylvia's instructions to her really were the right thing. *BE* there for her. That's the most important thing.

This storyline is going to be difficult to watch. Just the love between Roy and Hayley and watching how they are brings a lump to my throat.

Peter is going to give Rob what he wants. Rent free for 6 months. So wouldn't Peter still owe a mortgage? Maybe not. Rob and Tracy won't be paying rent at first but I certainly hope they're paying the rest of the bills. Everyone thinks the pawnbroker business is morally wrong but as Marcus pointed out, it's no worse than a betting shop. It's only really low if they start fronting stolen goods. Seeing as Rob's on probation, I would think they'd stay well clear of that.

Peter really does seem to be feeling beat down and Rob's continual badgering and poking him isn't helping. Carla wants him to work in the factory. He can't be any worse or less experienced than Michelle was and she's done ok. Naturally Michelle is all knotty-faced over Peter usurping her tenuous position. Carla keeps handing portions of her business over to everyone except Michelle. Jealous, much? Peter's doing it the right way, though. Learning the business from the bottom up and he's great with Kirk, isn't he?

Rob is getting a visit from the probation officer later this week. Wouldn't he have to go to them to check in regularly? Peter and Carla went ring shopping and ended up getting one he couldn't afford. Yet another blow to his ego has Carla buying it herself. Rob and Tracy knew very well who paid for the diamond ring and it's another chip off Peter's ego. Tracy wants to call the business Barlow's Buys. Not a far shout from Barlow's Bookies really. Donovan's Deals sounds a bit cleaner but a bit of a paint fight and she wins.

Isn't it nice that Carla and Deirdre seem to be more friendly lately. Deirdre is right, though. Peter wouldn't like to be Carla's employee. Carla offered him an equal partnership in the factory and proposed marraige. Not surprised she'd be the one to do the proposing and you know? After all this time, they're growing on me as a couple. Tracy was snarky about the engagement. Jealous, much?

Leanne immediately assumed Kylie was likely to have tampered with the booze. In spite of the worry, Nick and Leanne are still getting along which seems to be annoying David. David has written nasty reviews on the online review sites. All anonymous, mind you. Nick is now sure someone's out to get him but he doesn't know who it is so he's ready to accuse everyone except the most obvious. He offended his staff and lost a few quid from being distracted. David must be metaphorically jumping for joy.

Tim really doesn't want to leave does he? Anna's walking around all surly and was rude about Roy being secretive about the laptop. She's getting what she wants, Tim leaving so why is she not dancing in the street? She was even sour when Tim told Faye. Faye didn't take the news very well. Heartbroken and feeling abandoned again but if he goes, at least this time he'll keep in touch. Sally insisted that there's still a chance and it looks like she's made inroads into convincing him.

Paul has a hearing for telling those kids off and he's paranoid he'll get himself into more trouble. Turns out it didn't really go anywhere because all the witness statements aren't in yet. I could be nasty here but I won't. Sally had a good go at him in the pub for having a go at Sophie on the street. Sophie said Paul didn't
apologize but he did, after a fashion. So much for that half hearted apology. If Sophie hadn't wound Paul up in the street, Paul wouldn't have started it up all over again. It's so frustrating watching this clash of egos. Sophie has gone from a good little Christian into a judgemental one and now she's going to make sure Paul pays. It just gets worse and worse, with more confrontations and misunderstandings.

Jason's right. Paul's apology really didn't feel all that sincere. He might be determined to rise above what Lloyd says but then he's got a pretty quick tongue too. They managed to pass on the street without incident but it doesn't take much to blacken Paul's mood when his boss warned him about another formal complaint about the racism. Just when Jenna thinks it's being put behind them, Sophie confesses she's stuck her oar in. Showing up her immaturity, too. Paul. But naturally Paul gets drunk and goes on the attack when he sees Lloyd. If it happens when Paul was off duty, though, does it really count as much in an investigation?

It's getting frustrating, now. It's gotten to be a bit ridiculous now. Every time Paul opens his mouth he says the wrong thing and everyone jumps all over him. Everyone jumps to the wrong conclusions. Eileen is really feeling stuck in the middle and it's causing trouble between Paul and Eileen, and between Mandy and Lloyd, too. Plus Mandy's still being snotty about Jenna's job attempts. I can understand her being disappointed but a little support wouldn't go amiss.

Why did Audrey look thoughtful when Tracy mentioned people that couldn't afford to pay their electric bill? I see they hired Jason to do the renovation work. I bet he's a lot cheaper than Owen and more honest. Love it that Deirdre's pots are still making occasional appearances and the one she gave Audrey was almost normal looking! Audrey had to buy some of her own drinks on her birthday and she seemed put out that not all the family was there. Audrey really does seem to be a bit down at the moment.

Oh gosh, the baby brigade is back under the Rovers' roof, happy families making Tina feel bad again. She's got to get her head around the baby coming home from hospital, not with her.

Baby Jake is home! Why did they wait until the very last day to try to put the crib together, though, or whatever it is. The baby seems to be in a basket, maybe it was a wardrobe or something. Gary's already feeling inadequate. You know Gary, If it doesn't go exactly his way from the start, he gets anxious and freaked out. Next thing you know he's going to blame the 2 month old for not liking him.

I can't stand Tim and just wish he'd go and Sally Webster? That's a match made in hell.

Sophie, I really don't like. She's a predator and just plain nasty.

I'm relieved that the writers are being honest about Pancreatic Ca. I used to work on the ward where the post-op Whipple patients were cared for. Terrible outcome usually. I'd never undergo one. I'd go home and enjoy what time I had left. In five years, I only remember one patient walking out.

I wouldn't call Sophie a predator, just a silly immature teenager really.

Corrie does tend to do serious storylines pretty well. Things do need to be sped up and sometimes buffered because it's telly and it's a family show but I can forgive them that. It's going to be a tough storyline to watch but they couldn't pick better actors to tell the story.

How old is Sophie supposed to be anyway? You referred to her as a teenager just above. I guess she is, but she seems to have been a teenager forever. Maybe this is why I never saw Sophie as a good match for Jenna, who is supposed to be more like...25? At least, Jenna's training was completed, and she had a full time job, more an adult, really, as compared to Sophie...

I think Sophie will be 19 her next birthday, but she acts a lot younger. Jenna is about 27 or 28.
