State of the Street - March 2015

March has gone out like a lion, with the return of Sarah hot on the stilettos of her wayward daughter. I say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree but at least Bethany has got to 14 without giving birth. Unlike another young teen on the street in a storyline I'm quite enjoying. I think they've done a smashing job with Faye's pregnancy, something I was a bit dubious about at first. The diamond in that storyline has to be Craig Tinker and I think we all agree with that.

I think there's been a lot of good stuff over the last month and I've quite enjoyed Corrie on the whole. Tracy leading Tony around is at least interesting. Linda came and fetched Katy and I can't say I'm sorry she's gone. The storyline that had Mrs. Armstrong return for her chicks wasn't all that great but the end result worked for me! The other result was it widened the crack that Owen and Anna had papered over several times over the years.

I am a bit bored with the whole Callum/David storyline, but really enjoying the ongoing Gavin and Andy thing with Michael. Gavin's death is having long standing repercussions as more and more lies are woven.

What ever happened to baby Platt?

(This post was originally posted by Scott Willison on the Coronation Street Blog in March 2015.)

The flat is dark, deathly dark.  The only light comes from the flickering of a television, its colours bouncing off the face of a figure in a chair.  Her hair is wild.  Her clothes are ragged.  In her hand is a bottle.  She speaks.

"BAAAAAHHHHH!"

It's Friday the 20th of March 2015, it's gone 7:30, and ITV is on.  The girl shakes her head again.  She murmurs something, quietly, under her breath.  So hard to hear.  She repeats it, again and again, getting louder each time, until finally we can make out the words.  Slurred through a drunken mouth.

"Shhhhould've been meeeee!"

The phone rings and with one shaky hand she brings the receiver to her face.

"Yeah?  Of course I'm watching it.  What else have I got to do?  Are you watching it?...  Both of you?...  Well, she always was the more emotional one.  Hang on."

She pauses for a long rackety cough.

"I'm back.  Yeah.  Look at her.  Look.  At.  Her.  All blonde hair and lips.  I could've done that."

She takes a swig from the Jagermeister bottle.

"Of course I'm drinking!  I'm allowed to, aren't I?  I'm old enough.  Everyone knows I am now.  Everyone."

The last word was almost sobbed, but the moment of emotion is crushed.

"Ah, stop your whining.  At least you got to be on TV.  At least you got seven years of employment out of it.  Pay packets and exposure.  I got none of that."

The scene changes, and the woman in the chair lets out a cackle of a laugh.  "Look at that jacket!  Look at it!  I wouldn't have worn that.  I've got more class.  Some people will do anything to be on tv... what?  I told you, that wasn't me, that was my agent."

A burp.

"Sitting there in a pub.  The character's fourteen, love!  You shouldn't be there!  Pretending to be a different age.  No class...  I told you, that was my agent."

A venerable actress appears onscreen, and the girl in the chair lets out a furious cry.

"HER!  THAT ONE!  All keen for the publicity shots then I'm out on my ear.  No word.  Not even a text...

"...what?  I suppose.  All those years you worked with her and she doesn't phone any more.  Very good at acting like a grandmother, no good at being one.  Does it all the time.  When the kid gets too old or too ugly or too much trouble, out you go, in with a new head, and she never looks back.  Cruel."

She takes another drink, but it is empty.  With a listless arm she throws the glass bottle towards the tv.  It catches on the corner, breaks, the shards disappearing into the darkness.

"I'll be alright," she says to the concerned voice down the phone.  "You will too.  All of us.  Got to stick together, all us rejects.  Should phone the Tracys.  Have a get together.  Few shots... well, can't you get a fake ID?  I know a bloke.  I'll put you onto him.  Yeah."

She slams down the phone, her eyes no longer focusing on the television.  She's falling into a doze.  As she slips away, she sings along to the brassy theme tune through half-open lips, quietly, winding down.

Getting it right when a Rover Returns

(This post was originally posted by Graeme N on the Coronation Street Blog in February 2015, reposted with permission.)

Ah, the perils of a returning character. It either works or it doesn't. For me at the moment, Coronation Street is all about the return of that legendary ginger minx, Jenny Bradley.

This is a joy for me as it brings back memories of one of Corrie's best ever sagas from what I still see as a golden era for the show. So far Sally Ann Matthews has been on fine form, performing the difficult task of bringing life to Jenny over twenty years after her last appearance.

I think it is working a treat. It is stirring up drama for some of the more established, long standing members of the Corrie cast and that can only be a good thing. The return story is plausible and Sally Ann is clearly relishing being back. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Bringing back former characters is a risky business. It's a gamble that can pay off, rewarding long-time viewers with references to the past, although sometimes they can just get it wrong. I think the main principles for bringing an old character back to Corrie are quite simple. Firstly, the character concerned must still be relevant. They must have current, ongoing links and often unfinished business with regular cast members. Secondly, the actor must be returning to play a character that is still recognisable to enough of the regular, loyal Corrie viewers. Finally, the writers must be able to write authentically for the character and understand both them and their motivations.

Sometimes I do sympathise with the powers that be. They can't do right for doing wrong. Either they are bringing in too many new faces which fans think do not gel or are not right for Corrie or they are bringing back too many old hat characters that have long since past their sell by dates.

Some recent returns have been surprisingly good. Jenny aside, I found myself enjoying Cilla's brief visit to Weatherfield last year. I was never much of a fan of Cilla during her original stint, she was always too extreme and too pantomime for my tastes. However the toned down, vulnerable Cilla we saw more recently worked well and felt a lot more believable. One of my favourite returning characters of recent years has to be Wendy flamin' Crozier. Coming from the same period as Jenny Bradley, the Ken-Deirdre-Wendy triangle of the late 1980s was superb. Roberta Kerr just seemed to pick up where she left off and it was great to see her back to upset the Barlow applecart.

Sometimes though, we are left scratching our heads and wondering where it all went wrong. Step forward Julie Goodyear, former queen of the Rovers Return as the iconic Bet Lynch. I loved our Bet - the comedy, the drama, the frocks, she had it all. The ill-advised come back in 2002 left a sour taste in the mouth as both Ms Goodyear and the viewing public quickly realised too much water had flowed down the Irwell since her last appearance in 1995. Some things are best left in the past as glorious, camp memories.

At least the character of Bet remained true to herself on her much heralded return. The same cannot be said for others. I loved Sunita when she first appeared in 2001. She was sweet, kind and easy to love. Her come back in 2009 proved otherwise. She returned to Dev, they did a crazy, Nazir-like move into the street and the writers morphed her into a vamp, a seductress with the morals of something you'd find up the ginnel late at night. The same can be said of Dev's errant daughter Amber. She was the funny, sharp kid for a while, then left only to return solely to ruin Sawphie's relationship with Sian. It didn't work at all. Of the current cast, we have returnee Todd, another previously mainly decent character who has now inherited the warped mind of the tricyle riding child from The Omen. I think we are finally due an explanation of what the devil has happened to him.

There are always characters I would still love to see make a return to Weatherfield, whether for a special one off appearance or for a longer stint. Everyone has their own wish list of those they'd love to come back, so here is mine:

1. Mavis WIlton. Oh for one final glimpse of our Mave. I want this so badly I was over the moon just to hear her name mentioned recently when Rita went to stay with her. Seeing Barbara Knox and Thelma Barlow reunited for that special documentary at Christmas was an absolute joy. It would be wonderful to see RIta and Emily visit Mavis at her guest house for a special episode. Go on, Corrie, make it happen.

2. Eddie Windass. Why Corrie ever got rid of the fantastic Eddie Windass I'll never know. He was a classic Coronation Street character in the making. He was lazy, work shy and needed a good going over with a damp flannel yet he still managed to turn out beautiful cakes for any occasion. Now that we are seeing the back of Owen, isn't it time Gary went to look for old Eddie, bringing him back to Weatherfield and reuniting him with Anna?

3. Suzie Birchall. One of my all time favourite Corrie women, Suzie epitomised the golden Corrie era of the late 1970s. Indeed, Suzie really brought Corrie into that decade with a bang. I loved the set up of Gail, Suzie and Elsie, it really was cracking stuff. Gail rarely mentions Suzie these days, perhaps not surprising considering she tried to pinch her husband Brian back in 1983. In fact, with hindsight, it might have been better for Gail if she'd succeeded. I understand Cheryl Murray has suffered some ill health in recent years but I think it would be terrific to see Suzie turn up on Gail's doorstep one more time. We've had Gail the overpowering mother from hell and we've had Gail the simpering lovestruck bride to be, so why not have Gail having some fun and turning some heads with her old pal?

4. Janice Battersby. Perhaps a bit of a Marmite choice here, but for me her relationship with Leanne was always much more truthful and believable than anything the writers cooked up with Stella. Janice has all but been wiped from our memories which I think is a shame as Vicky Entwistle brought a lot of verve to the role. She wasn't always nice, but she was fiercely protective of her own. I'd like to see Janice back for a visit.

5. Finally, please powers that be, tempt Suranne Jones back for a stint as the wonderful Karen McDonald. Karen has been the only real match for Steve as far as I'm concerned. I loved their fiery relationship and Suranne is a brilliant actress. There are plenty of reasons for her to make a return with the likes of Steve, Liz and Tracy all still in the show. And I for one would love to see her take on Michelle.

So there we have it, my take on the pros and cons of bringing back classic characters to Corrie. The next cab off the rank has been Gail's darling Sarah Lou. We shall have to wait and see how that one goes.

Corrie Canada weekly awards for March 30 - April 3

Can't take the English out of the girl: For all her formative years spent in Italy, Bethany still prefers a nice cup of tea.

Mystery award: What's going on with Jenny? Upset over Maddie's childhood accident and freaking out worried that Jack might have choked on a shallot? I wonder if she lost a child to an accident.

Confessional award: Gavin's mother admits she turned her son against his father. She might want to make peace but the damage was done. Her hatred pushed Gavin to blackmail and ultimately to his death.

Her mother's daughter. Amy knew darn well Liz was buying her off so she wouldn't keep playing the recorder so she soaked her for enough cash for the expensive sweets!

Classics Award: Bethany has done Anna Karenina for school but better than that, she's seen the film, and better than that again, it was one of the old movies with Vivien Leigh! (from 1948)

Musical Ambiance: "At Last" playing when Steve and Michelle announced the engagement.

Wrong end of the stick award: Liz wondered if the butlers would do housework with their kit off. Sally reckoned Faye and Craig were just sharing daft little secrets.

Lines of the week:
Gail "Don't you 'friendly face' me, Bethany Platt. What are you doing here?"
Gail "Why now?" Bethany "I just fancied a decent cuppa tea"
David "Gail is like an old piano. You got to know how to play her or she makes a terrible noise"
Gail to Bethany "I brought up David. I know every trick in the book and more besides"
Bethany about Anna Karenina "It is chick lit. In a way" (for the 19th century, yes, it is!)
Sean about the Butler auction "This is supposed to be a hot totty fest, not a kiddies' party"
Sally about Craig and Faye "I know kids. It'll be something and nothing"
Steve "I didn't propose to her out of some psychotic breakdown"
Tracy "There should be a law to protect honest (cough), hardworking business owners like me!"
Leanne to Steve "You've not got the monopoly on misery"

Coronation Street storylines in top greatest soap moments

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog March 2015, reposted to this blog with permission.)

Three Coronation Street storylines have been voted in the top five greatest soap moments of all time.

Kat Slater being revealed as Zoe's mum in 'Stenders was voted in at first place.

In 2nd place was Richard Hillman driving the Platt family into the canal in Coronation Street came second in the poll.  Relive the Hillman horror story here - from start to watery end.

In 3rd place was Hayley Cropper's cancer battle and subsequent death in 2014.

In 4th place was 'Stenders again with Dirty Den getting shot in 1989

In 5th place was the Corrie tram crash in 2010.

John Sewell, spokesman for paid survey site OnePoll.com which commissioned the research, said:

"There have been many brilliant and gripping storylines over the years - whether they are tearjerkers like the moment Hayley died in Coronation Street or high drama like the live tram crash. Soaps are a huge part of our culture and these results show the storylines are remembered years after they are first screened."

Other Coronation Street storylines to feature in the top 20 include Tyrone suffering domestic abuse at the hands of partner Kirsty and Mike Baldwin dying in rival Ken Barlow's arms on the cobbles.

Sunday Comments April 5

Panic stations for Gail who shoved Barbara back into the house so she and Michael don't see each other. In the process, she finds herself committed to going to the funeral. She does manage to veer Michael away from the house and gets lucky that Barbara doesn't see him through the window. She even tempted him into the pub with the promise of a real drink. Steph and Michael head over and guess who's there? Andy and the young blonde and Steph isn't best pleased to see her boyfriend with a pretty girl. He still doesn't even know her name, either.

Gail promises to be at the mediation but she's also promised to go to Gavin's funeral. She's got to pretend she doesn't know Andy because all Gavin's friends and family would know Andy. Now Gail has go to the wake to speak to Gavin's mother. She did say she had to be somewhere, what she should have said was that she had an appointment and it would cost her if she missed it. But no, she gave in. Gavin's ex is now very sorry and wants to make peace with Michael, even after admitting she purposely turned Gavin against his father by pouring poison in his ear all his life. Nice.

David's depending on Gail supporting him at the mediation session. He can't deal with Callum on his own? Yet Gail isn't allowed to be in the actual session so yeah, he's dealing with Callum on his own. Except it's conflicting with the funeral and even Gail can't work out how to be two places at once.

The mediation didn't go well, this time for David. He was frustrated and angry that Gail didn't make it. This time apparently the mothers were allowed in to the meeting. Callum's mother did most of the talking for him at first and later Callum painted himself in a shining light and Kylie in a very bad light, pretending he wasn't the drug supplier. Naturally, that set David off. He was quite angry with Gail for not showing up but there's no guarantee that things would have been any better with her there. Andy saved the day by lying that Gail was late because he had a health issue. Poor Gail. After the day she had and she still couldn't tell Michael why she was really worried.

Her worry is rubbing Michael the wrong way because he doesn't understand what's behind it.

Bethany ended up really ticking off Steph and it nearly came to hair pulling before Gail arrived and blew it all out of the water. It's Bethany Platt, Sarah's 14 year old daughter! Whoops! She's making it sound like Sarah's working all hours and was aware she was going to Manchester. Bet that's a lie. Yep. that's a lie. But she's determined she's not going back. Bethany is due to go back to Italy on Sunday. In the meantime, she's really buttering up Gail to make sure she could stay. She managed to get out of working in the Bistro in favour of the Salon and proceeded to get Audrey on her side by helping her with Anna Karenina and pretending she's been picked on in school when in reality she probably runs circles around the teachers and leads the popular in crowd.

It comes to the day Bethany is supposed to fly home to Milan but she has no intentions of it. I also notice for all her formative years have been in Italy, she still likes a nice cup of tea. She desperately threw Nick's car keys in the front garden. They couldn't have got lost, it's not like it's a bog or anything. It would have taken him 30 seconds to pick them up so why didn't she just run away without that stupid gesture? ah of course, because she's 14. She ducked into Barlows Buys but was outed pretty quickly by Todd but she's not getting on the plane and it's probably true, nobody can really physically force her at her age.

Now that Gavin's dead, Andy has to move out since he wasn't on the lease. Steph has a spare room, what a coincidence! Though I don't suppose he'll use it other than for storage. Not quite the romantic "let's move in together" that Kal and Leanne had but needs must. Gail insists he go to the funeral and since he's probably known to the family, it would look odd if he didn't.

David is still having to take Max to see Callum, this time to the park on a snowy day (Great shot of them coming up the steps into it, I've stood right there and seen those houses!) I suppose having Dave and Callum with Max together was one of the compromises.

Roy is probably right not to trust Sharif's motives. He does seem to be economical with what he tells people, especially those he sees as a rival. Sharif won the plot but it was his idea that they share it but it's not going well, not even in the planning.

There's definitely something going on with Jenny. She reacted really strangely to Maddie's story about getting pushed in a pool as a child and freaked out when she thought Jack swallowed a shallot and might choke. I wonder if she lost a child to an accident? Kevin hasn't seen Jenny since she freaked out over the incident with Jack and the shallot. Sally was pretty bitchy and only because Rita's upset. Jenny's having second and third thoughts about the relationship so Kevin has it out with Rita with Norris pouring his snarky remarks in to the mix. And really, it's not Rita's business to approve of anyone Kevin dates. Jenny was persuaded to stay on. She's very good with Jack even if she's been a bit over-cautious.

Looks like Lloyd and Steve may finally find their friendship again over the shards of a broken chair. It's a first step, anyway. The cab office wreck of a chair was fixed. Steve feels ready to face the world. The only problem is Michelle has discovered some tax bills that Steve hid away and they owe a big chunk. I wonder if they could make payments? How do you tell someone who's finally pulling himself together news like this? Not easily. Michelle is being good with Steve but it's a worry. He's going to sort things out but how? Buy discount loo roll? Need do buy cheap for decades to save over ten thou. Tony's got a good idea. He sold back the house that he bought Jason and Eva and can loan them the money. Brilliant!

Tony's supposed to help out with the tax bill but he doesn't want Steve to know until the house sale money actually comes through. That's smart. Todd "accidentally" let Tracy know that Tony sold the house so he's got or will have cashflow. Now Tracy wants to get her hands on it to expand the business. Conflict warning!

Steve and Lloyd seem to be getting on better. Steve can't figure out what's best to do with the tax man but is very glad Michelle is being so supportive. Exactly the best time to propose, right? Wrong. But she said yes anyway!

Michelle, not wanting to add pressure to Steve, suggests a long engagement which of course sparks off his insecurity and he thinks she's trying to put him off. Lloyd worries about Steve's rash and sudden proposal and it's true, it could very well have been Steve's reaction to the shock of the tax bill. He's done plenty of impulsive things in recent months. Now his insecurity has made Steve call it off and she's upset because she knows it's got more to do with his illness and it's very difficult.

Faye isn't so happy that Owen plans to make her a priority, full undivided attention. Craig is really getting anxious about the impending birth. Faye just can't seem to get the words out to tell her mother what's happening, especially after Anna's remarks about Katy having a baby so young. They found out that Dev's flat is still empty and Faye reckoned that's as good a place as any. She makes Craig steal the keys and they're in.

Craig and Faye nearly got caught out talking by Sally and Tim who think Craig is her boyfriend. Craig is really freaking out about the baby being born in the flat. Since she wants him to take the newborn to the hospital and leave it there, Craig thinks a trial run is in order but he can hardly sit still while waiting for the bus and then his bag got stolen and dumped in a puddle so he missed the bus. Todd hollered that he hoped there was nothing fragile in there. No but there will be and can you imagine if there really had been a baby in the bag? One more reason for Craig to stress.

There's going to be a butler auction in a few days. Sean and Billy argued on who would be the auctioneer, Sean insisting he knows how to work a room. I wish he would have remembered (or the writers) that he used to be a Bingo caller for a short while. That would have been a blast from the past.

On the day of the Butler auction, Liz has got concept wrong. It's butler, not love slave! She wondered if they would have to do housework without clothes! Kal and Zeedan are shaming Sharif into dressing up like an actual butler in formal wear.

That stop that Katy wanted to make was to the hospital so Sinead could say goodbye. That was nice. Bye Bye Katy. Chuckled at Beth and Kirk's discussion on whether Goofy is a dog or a horse. Who says Kirk is stupid? It was Beth that thought he was a horse when we all can clearly see Goofy's a dog! Also chuckled at Callum making out that he and David were a couple to those women in the park! Nice little scene between Steve and Leanne, two characters that rarely interact.

Deception Street

What a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.

Yep. That pretty much sums up the mess that Andy Carver's in. He was unemployed, skint and a bit lonely. His flatmate and childhood friend, Gavin Rodwell had dumped his own fiance,  stolen Andy's girlfriend and gone traveling. The bills were mounting up. He and Gavin had often competed to see who's dad was more rubbish and Gavin usually won through force of personality if nothing else. When a reconciliation letter popped through the letterbox one day, addressed to Gavin and from his father, Michael, Andy was intrigued.  He thought he'd meet the man, pretend to be Gavin, and find out of all the stories were true.

While he was in a sticky spot financially, he wasn't intending to rip off Michael for any major cash though thought he might cadge a tenner or two or a free pint. He didn't intend to be pulled in by Michael's sincerity and pleasure at finally getting a chance to make things up with his son, the lad he'd left behind when he walked out on his wife all those years ago. He felt sympathy with Michael's regrets and his genetic heart condition that had spurred on his quest to find his son. He didn't intend for the pretense to go very far. But Andy found himself drawn to the man and liking him quite a bit. He got slotted into a much-needed job in the Bistro even though he really had no experience (the real Gavin did). He even got a great new girlfriend, Steph.

The longer the guise went on, the harder it was to reveal the truth. We found out pretty early that "Gavin" was not "Gavin" but Andy and that Andy felt guilty about the situation. It was a couple of months before Steph found out the truth but though she insisted he come clean, it turned out that was impossible.

He nearly did it, he went to see Michael and was going to confess, but Steph stopped him before he could, because Michael's medical condition had worsened and the shock could kill him. Oh great. What next? Andy's former girlfriend shows up but he managed to wiggle out of that one by staging a row with Steph over it. Even after Michael's heart operation, the truth had to stay in the closet until the results were determined and those results weren't very good. Michael now needs a heart transplant.  All stress had to be avoided.

The mire got deeper. The web got more tangled. Michael and Gail were getting married and Andy would be best man. By now, he was growing to love Michael and the new family Michael had gathered, the Platts. They may have their crises and they certainly have their faults, but they were a strong little family unit, more of a family than Andy had had before and they all pulled together when it mattered. As wrong as it would be to continue the... let's face it...identity theft and fraud, maybe, just maybe he could get away it it until Michael's health was better.

But wait! Wouldn't you know it? The real Gavin Rodwell finally shows up, just as we all knew he would someday. Perfect timing, too, on the eve of Gail and Michael's wedding. And he proved himself to be a bit of a wrong'un, also as we all thought he would be. He had to be, to contrast with the lovely Andy who, fraud and impersonation aside, is a very nice guy.

Gavin wasn't very happy with what his mate has done and you can't blame him for that. But rather than immediately reveal the truth to all and sundry, with probable dire consequences for Michael's health (which wouldn't have bothered Gavin) or go to the police, he decides to blackmail Andy. Pay up and I'll shut up. Since Andy couldn't raise all the money, Gavin shows up on Gail's doorstep on her wedding day and now she knows the truth. To save Michael from the shock, she paid Gavin off the remainder but missed her wedding because of it.

Except Karma is a bitch. And the next layer of the onion/storyline is revealed when Gavin died suddenly, very shortly after Gail passed over the cash. Too bad it wasn't a cheque, he likely wouldn't have had time to cash it!  It first appeared to be a drink driving car crash but, no, it was actually a heart attack. Remember the genetic heart condition?  That was the other reason he needed to get hold of his son, so that he could be tested. Andy did tell Gavin this and so did Gail but Gavin either didn't believe him or hadn't had the chance to get checked out before it was too late. Irony, thy name is Rodwell.

I have been loving this storyline. I always loved Gail's family (always the Platts to me no matter what her last name-du-jour is). I like Michael a lot, as well. Some people find him weak and soppy and pathetic. I know he's not a strong man, but Corrie men rarely are. Michael Rodwell is a kind and sweet man. He is emotional and generous and he's got a lot of regrets in his life. I think he's a really good match for Gail who deserves a good man after all the cads she's been with.  They're going to get married and I really hope she's not going to be a widow again. With Michael's dicky ticker, it's a distinct possibility. It's getting to be utterly absurd that almost every man she's ever married has died.

I love how this storyline has unfolded in layers and twists. The first one was the surprise that Gavin wasn't really Gavin. The viewer then knew for a couple of months before the truth was revealed to Steph and we watched Andy become more and more involved and more and more uncomfortable in various situations. The actor playing RealGavin was superb, too. He really projected Gavin's anger and bitterness believably and was far more believable as a villainous character than Callum, a drug dealer who should be equally scary in his own way but isn't. (Though I do like his touch of the occasional sniff, as if to imply he's got a cocaine habit, but nope, still not scary.)

This most recent twist, with Gavin dying of the same heart condition that Michael has is brilliant as the plot device to move this to the next phase. Little by little, more people will find out who Andy is and Michael will probably be the last to know. Whether the shock is going to kill him or not remains to be seen.  He'll be devastated, not only to find out the truth but that his loved ones didn't tell him, even if it was for his health. (don't click here if you don't want to know who finds out next).

The last storyline that had this many twists and turns was the John Stape/Colin Fishwick saga which was funny and dark and ludicrous at times but very enjoyable. I don't know how this will end. Will the shock of it all kill Michael? Will he get a transplant before he finds out? What about Andy? Will the reveal mean he's going to leave us? I hope not. I like he and Steph together but he's sure gonna have a lot of 'splaining to do.

Corrie's gay vicar story gets support - from gay vicars

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog March 2015, reposted to this blog with permission.)

Daniel Brocklebank, who plays the wonderful Billy the vicar on Coronation Street, has told The Mirror that he's been getting some abuse from 'fans' of the show about playing a gay vicar.

Attitude magazine reprint Daniel's quotes to the Mirror - you can read the article here.

Daniel says of the role: “We’re here to cause some sort of stir and you’re never going to please everyone. Some of the religious viewers so far have not been too happy.

“A woman came up to me in a supermarket three days ago telling me I was going to go to hell playing a gay vicar. The show itself has had a backlash.”

However, Brocklebank remains positive that Billy can be a force for good in the long run.

I couldn't agree more.

After Daniel tweeted the link to the article in Attitude magazine, two gay vicars tweeted back to show their support to the actor and the role.

Corrie actor lives in campervan on ITV set

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog March 2015, reposted to this blog with permission.)

Joe Duttine, who plays Tim on Coronation Street, was interviewed on Good Morning Britain today.  He talked about the storyline in which Faye gives birth to a baby girl and there's a wonderful clip of Tim taking Craig to one side to have a very awkward chat about the birds and the bees.

Joe responded to tabloid claims at the weekend that he lives in a campervan on the ITV set in Manchester.  He says it's true, he does live in the campervan when he's in Manchester - and that it's fully equipped!

You can watch the video here.

Conversation Street podcast 142

Gemma and Michael's podcast for the episodes in Canada that aired (up to last night's Canadian Corrie) can be heard here.

It was a short week for Corrie in the UK when the podcast was broadcast. That's why it's on the blog on a different day! Next one will cover a couple extra episodes and we'll have it on April 14.

This week, Faye's making plans for the birth, much to Craig's dismay. Kevin's trying to convince Jenny to stay and Rita to give them a break. Gail has to attend Gavin's funeral and ends up giving David cause to be angry. Bethany butters up everyone she can think of so she doesn't have to go back to Milan and Steve proposes to Michelle. The classic character profile is one of Kevin's former loves, Natalie Barnes.

Daniel Brocklebank on playing Billy the Vicar

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog March 2015, reposted to this blog with permission.)

There's a good interview in this week's Inside Soap magazine with Daniel Brocklebank, who plays Billy the Vicar in Coronation Street.

Daniel appeared in Emmerdale from 2005-6 as Ivan Jones the dustman.

He's also been in films such as Shakespeare in Love...

...and worked with Helena Bonham-Carter in the TV Mini-Series Merlin.

He's also worked with Gwyneth Paltrow, Keira Knightly, Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman.

Daniel says he grew up watching all the soaps and he says he's having a blast working on the Street. On playing a gay member of the clergy, Daniel says: "I an honestly say that I've not had one negative letter or tweet.  I'm very pleased that the viewers have really taken to his relationship."

This coming week on Corrie will see Billy face some awkward moments with Emily who is accustomed to working with a vicar who is older and more traditional. "I have had some brilliant scenes working with Eileen Derbyshire, who plays Emily," Daniel says. "She is an absolute dream and the sweetest lady."

"I would love to stay for a while," Daniel says. "Billy's got some great stuff coming up and I look forward to getting my scripts.  It's like Christmas morning when I walk in and find a new script waiting for me."

The chickens can stay (slighit spoiler)

(This post was originally posted by Graeme N on the Coronation Street Blog in March 2015.)

I'm feeling a bit "meh" about Coronation Street at the moment. There are some good bits and some not so good bits, yet nothing truly awful. I'm in the midst of a Corrie conundrum.

I'll kick off with what I'm enjoying at the moment. Strangely, I'm beginning to quite like Steve and Michelle together. Steve has always been a favourite, Michelle less so. However her unflinching support now his depression is out in the open has been pleasing to see. I actually have less of a problem imagining them walking down the aisle now. Having said that, I stand by my original comments that it would be more truthful to the depression storyline had we seen more of Steve interacting with his counselor. A bit like Tim's reading difficulties, this side of things has been badly handled.

I've also thoroughly enjoyed the ongoing Kevin/Jenny/Rita story. I hope we will see more of this soon. There's always a risk attached to bringing back characters from another era however Jenny has slotted back in beautifully and I really don't want her to leave again. I hope her story is not cut and dried - I like elements of her ginger minx character but I think it's time for some more layers.

I was dubious about Faye's pregnancy storyline but the young actress Ellie Leach has put in some superb performances so far. I hope it doesn't end up going over old ground however as Sarah and Bethany will shortly be back with us it would be absurd for them not to share scenes and experience. I've also loved Craig's involvement in this story. Colson Smith is a great actor and has come on leaps and bounds. Craig has been a loyal and supportive friend to Faye and it's heartening to see a younger character with those qualities.

It has been a joy to see more of Emily too. I have liked her interactions with Billy the vicar and it's good to see her doing something that doesn't just involve making up the numbers with Rita and Norris. I fear that sometimes the character of Emily is treated as nothing more than a walk on part but given the right material Eileen Derbyshire still knows how to play it. Unfortunately the material just doesn't always seem to be there.

I'm missing Eva already. Of the three actresses away on maternity leave, she leaves the biggest gap for me. True, Fiz and Kylie have carried bigger story lines but Eva is such a refreshing presence in Corrie that I think her absence will be the most keenly felt. I'm also missing Carla who seems to have disappeared into the Corrie cupboard along with my favourite Nazir, the sparky, spiky Yasmeen. I'm still enjoying Steph even though her current storyline is irritating me (more later) and I hope we see more of her brother Luke. I'm not sure being saddled with Maria is the best thing for his character but the siblings are a breath of fresh air. Finally, I have high hopes for Roy's upcoming friendship with newcomer Cathy. I can see Melanie Hill having great chemistry with David Neilson and as we have been assured it will not be a romantic storyline we can all sit back and enjoy.

Now to some of my low points from recent viewing. I think my general feeling is that there are currently just too many characters I don't really care about or see myself investing time in learning to like. I think I'll call it Sophie Webster syndrome. On paper they read like a good idea but in practice, less so.

We'll start with the Windass-Armstrong clan. All the stuff with Linda just did nothing for me. I already disliked Owen so this has just shunted him further into the pit of scheming negativity. Anna, who has had her moments is swiftly turning into a pinny-clad shrew who spends her time ferrying plates of food back and forth with a permanent scowl on her face. Katy is pointless but she's away soon so we'll leave that be. Izzy seemed surplus to requirements after her split with Gary so who knows what she'll be before long?

Apart from this lot, the other family dominating screen time at the moment are the Platts. I don't even know if they have a collective name anymore as so many surnames are involved. Platt, McIntyre, Roberts, Tilsley, Rodwell, Carver, Logan, Turner. Phew. I love Audrey's constant support in the background but she needs to ditch them all fast and crawl out of number 8 into a storyline of her own that also does not involve Maria, Ken Barlow or Anna Karenina. Gail and Michael are an excellent match, two big drips. All this stuff with David, Max and Callum is tedious. They all seem to have forgotten that Kylie didn't just leave, David chucked her out.  Callum is yet to develop into a character worth keeping, I'm not sure if they are writing him as a villain or a camp comedy element. Whatever, it's dragging on too long.

Talking of dragging on too long, we now come to the ongoing Andy/Gavin saga. It feels to me that the writers don't have enough confidence in their basic plotlines so they must constantly make them even more complex and therefore unbelievable. Kudos to stalwarts Helen Worth and Sue Nicholls for keeping up with this one. I actually quite enjoyed the real Gavin, he was an odious baddie got rid of far too soon. He could've given Callum some tips. Basically it's all just too convoluted and at the end of it I don't really care what happens to any of them. We've been promised it will come to a dramatic head and that there will be repercussions for all. Hooray. More simpering Gail and scenes of Michael clutching his chest. When Gail asks him if it's his heart, it would be the perfect time for Les Dennis to squeak out "I don't really know..."

Less irritating but worth a ponder is the continuing presence of Chesney and Sinead. Why can Coronation Street no longer create and develop nice characters who are also interesting? Why does nice equal dull or old before their time? And when these options run out they can always morph into vamps that bed their neighbours, turn bunny boilers and face horrible deaths which are accompanied by swathes of publicity. Chesney and Sinead should be likeable. We, the collective audience should be fighting for them, willing them on. Not leaving the room to stick the kettle on whenever they appear.

Minor points before I go: I hope we never see Liz's friend Erica ever again. Sharif needs to be bundled into the van that comes to take the chickens away and never be seen again. The chickens can stay. I'm still not sure about Vicar Billy but that may be because he's sharing most of his scenes with Sean. Todd's London backstory - what on earth is it?? Still don't like Andrea.

And on a purely gratuitous note, can we have more scenes written in featuring Gary Windass with his top off. Even at the cafe, I don't care about the hygiene risks. I've been in it, it's not that clean.

Bethany Britney Platt - a life in pictures

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog January 2015, reposted to this blog with permission.)

The new version of Bethany Platt has been cast, again, it's been revealed today. And so, before new actress Lucy Fallon takes on the role as Bethany we'll see later this year, let's have a re-cap of the life of Bethany Platt so far, with pictures and the help of Corriepedia and Corrie.net

Bethany Britney Platt was born on 4 June 2000 in Weatherfield General Hospital.  You can watch it on Youtube here.

This makes the returning Bethany Platt currently 14 years of age and she'll be 15 this June.

Bethany was born when mum Sarah was only 13 years old and in a relationship with schoolboy Neil Fearns, who turned out to be Bethany's dad.

Bethany was taken away to Milan with Sarah in 2007 so we've only seen her on screen for 7 years, but it's been action packed as you can see...

2000 - Bethany was kidnapped at birth by Alison Webster after the death of her own child to an infection.  Watch it on YouTube here.  Alison handed Bethany back to Sarah then ran in front of a truck and killed herself.
2003 - Bethany was given an electric shock when Sarah moved into a seedy flat with Todd Grimshaw. Gail called Social Services. Bethany was rushed to hospital.

With thanks to @AmyE1991 for this pic

2003 - Bethany was drugged and almost killed by being driven into a canal by Richard Hillman when he tried to kill the whole Platt clan. They survived and he died. Relive the whole Hillman horror here.

2003 - Bethany's dad Neil Fearns died

2004  - Bethany was kidnapped by Neil Fearn's mother, Brenda.  Brenda threatened to jump off the top of a church and was talked down by Emily Bishop.

2007 - Bethany took ecstasy and was rushed to hospital. David hid ecstasy tablets in Bethany's doll for Darryl Morton, but Bethany took one of the pills and had to be rushed to hospital.

2006 - Bethany was bridesmaid for mum Sarah at her wedding to Jason Grimshaw. This was the wedding where Jason got cold feet and ran away from the wedding through a toilet window.  Watch it on YouTube here. Jason and Sarah did eventually marry in 2007.

In 2007 Sarah went to live in Milan to work for her uncle Stephen and she took Bethany with her.  We've not seen either of them since.  She divorced Jason Grimshaw in 2010 when he wanted to marry Tina McIntyre.

Also worth noting is that Todd Grimshaw hoped to adopt Bethany one day, while he was in his relationship with Sarah.  That is, however, before he tried snogging Sarah's brother Nick and having his fling with nurse Karl Foster.

Sarah refused to let Todd see Bethany after that, so it's going to be good to see if this is referred to when Bethany is back and if so, how Todd - and Jason - react to having both Sarah and Beth back.

Pics: Simon Gregson launches new Rovers at Madame Tussauds

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog March 2015, reposted to this blog with permission.)

Simon Gregson, who plays Coronation Street's Steve McDonald, launched the new Rovers Return at Madame Tussauds waxworks in Blackpool this week.

While he was there, Simon posed with some of the Coronation Street waxworks including Jack and Vera.

And Bet Lynch.

Simon also took time out to pose and have a gurn with one of our Coronation Street Blog competition winners, Emma Cameron-Pryde.

Simon said: "The Rovers is my home away from home and the set at Madame Tussauds Blackpool is just like the real thing. The wax figures here are so lifelike, it is easy to get carried away chatting to them.

"It is great to be by the seaside - Blackpool and Coronation Street are both British institutions. I just have to watch out for the trams."
