Corrie Canada sneak previews for June 29 - July 3
Without further ado here is a brief sneak preview of what you'll see on next week's Corrie in Canada.
Alya can't live with the guilt. Fiz is back and casts a suspicious eye on Cathy who does seem to be hiding something. Brian campaigns to win Julie back. Miley's christening is the breaking point for Faye. Will she give the baby up or realize she wants to be a mum after all? Erica's birthday ends in tragedy.

Beware of the balconies in Coronation Street
This week on Coronation Street, we saw Jenny Bradley threaten to throw herself off a balcony with little Jack.
The balcony storyline is a staple for soap. Let's have a look at some other balcony behaviour in Coronation Street.
The most famous balcony picture ever in Corrie's history?
The sauciest balcony picture ever in Corrie's history?
Of course, Coronation Street is no stranger to deranged women threatening to throw children from a balcony. Here's Ashley Peacock's childminder Casey threatening to do away with little Freddie.
The balcony of the builder's yard has seen its share of drama, with the falling off of Tina when she was pushed by Rob Donovan.
Jason Grimshaw also fell from the balcony at the builder's yard after the railings gave way.
Kal Nazir died fighting his way through the flames to the balcony in Carla's flat.
Tony Gordon killing Liam Connor by pushing him off a balcony was one of three murder scenes filmed by ITV. It wasn't used in the show, however. Liam was run over on Liam's stag night.
Are there any balconies we should beware of in Coronation Street? Leave a comment and let us know.

Coronation Street - to Hull and back
(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog June 2015, reposted to this blog with permission.)
If you're wondering where in Hull Coronation Street filmed Jenny's balcony scene, then don't. The Hull Daily Mail tells us it was filmed in Manchester.
A spokeswoman for Coronation Street told the Hull Daily Mail it was not necessary to film in Hull. Unless specific landmarks are seen on screen, it is not unusual for the show to be filmed locally.
The only real link to Hull in last night’s scenes was Laura Aramayo who made her TV debut as one of the police officers who led Jenny away after she was arrested.

Mothers on the cobbles - Elsie Tanner
(This post was originally posted by Ruth Owen on the Coronation Street Blog in June 2015.)
After having had children and those children having grown and gone, many women wonder what their purpose is, now fulltime motherhood is over. In a scene with Mike Baldwin and Elsie, Elsie bemoans her situation. She refers to herself as a ‘clapped out tart.’
Follow the Bluenose CorrieBlog on Twitter and Facebook
Jenny’s kidnapping of Jack and the revelation that she had a
son, Tom, aged 4, who drowned, put me in mind of how other mothers on the
cobbles cope with motherhood.
Firstly, the peerless Elsie Tanner, nee Grimshaw and her ongoing rows with her son Dennis over his joblessness and his
fecklessness. So convincing they were as mother and son that Elsie (Pat
Phoenix) used to receive many letters of advice about problems with almost
grown up children. One of the arguments between mother and son involved Elsie’s
suspicion that Dennis had taken two shillings (10 pence) from her handbag.
Elsie begins-:
‘Now look, let’s get this straight. Not an hour ago you
asked me for 2 bob for cigarettes.’
‘And you wouldn’t give it to me - we know.’
‘So you stoop to going in a lady’s handbag!’
‘Just listen - a lady is that what you crack on you are
these days.’
“Fine son, a fine son you are. That tongue of yours will get
you hung one day.’
‘Look, you’ve lost 2 bob, what am I supposed to do about
it?’
Get work, get work, that’s what you’re supposed to do about
it.’
‘Change the record, will you?’
Although Pat Phoenix never had her own children she was a
good enough mother to Dennis and her daughter Linda. Linda was already married
when Coronation Street began and later had a little boy called Paul, born in
1961. She married a Polish man, Ivan when Political Correctness was not the
order of the day. Ena Sharples took it upon herself to ask who ‘that gypsy
looking feller’ is. When we first meet Linda she is separated from Ivan, because
he would not allow her to work. Linda finally left him and in 1966 Linda
returned to Weatherfield, after having had an affair.
Elsie swore, she
smoked, she drank, she cried, she argued and men were drawn to her like magnets.
She loved her children and they loved her. Elsie was a single parent before
that term was ever coined. She was divorced and in the early 1960s there was a
strong stigma about divorced women. They were regarded with suspicion and
considered to be husband snatchers.
As we all know, Dennis returned recently and married Rita,
had his head turned by Gloria and tried to come back to Rita. Rita’s rejection of
him, gave Dennis no choice but to leave. So it seems that that’s it for any
further Tanner links
Pat Phoenix was for a short time, mother in law to future
Prime Minister, Tony Blair after having married Tony Booth, Cherie’s father in
the last few days of her life, before her 60 a day habit killed her at the age
of 62.
After having had children and those children having grown and gone, many women wonder what their purpose is, now fulltime motherhood is over. In a scene with Mike Baldwin and Elsie, Elsie bemoans her situation. She refers to herself as a ‘clapped out tart.’

When watching last night's Corrie, my eagle-eyed other half pointed out that there was a rat in both street murals which, of course, have now been attributed to the talented Craig Tinker.
The rat is clearly Craig's tag, and a tribute to his beloved pet Darryl.
What a lovely detail.

Corrie apologises for forgetting Kev's dead baby son
(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog June 2015, reposted to this blog with permission.)
A few days ago we pointed out that Coronation Street had forgotten that Kevin Webster once had a baby son who had died.
Today, Coronation Street producer Stuart Blackburn has apologised, via The Sun. And rightly so.
Stuart's apology in The Sun reads: “I would like to thank viewers who spotted our mistake. Our episodes go through many drafts and are scrutinised by many people, but on this occasion, we did make a mistake.”

When Alfred Hitchcock was on Coronation Street
(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog June 2015, reposted to this blog with permission.)
Last week saw the 55th anniversary of the original US release of Alfred Hitchcock's seminal film Psycho.
Time then, to resurrect this wonderful image of Mr H on the Coronation Street set.
This photograph of Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) peering through the doors of the Rovers Return in Coronation Street was taken in June 1964 by Joe Darby for the Daily Herald.
The caption read: 'While visiting a friend at Granada Television studios in Manchester, film director, Alfred Hitchcock, peeps through the doors of Coronation Street's famous local, the Rovers Return'.
Sidney Bernstein (1899-1993) had worked with Hitchcock on 'Rope' (1948) and 'Under Capricorn' (1949) and went on to become a co-founder of Granada Television.

Corrie Canada weekly awards for June 15 - 19
Acting award: Les Dennis did a great job acting drunk.
Writing fail: I really fail to believe that A. Carla would coldly write a cheque and even if she did, B. I don't think Roy would deliver it at a funeral wake. Propriety is always Roy's second nature.
15 seconds of fame award: ME! This news feed quoted me in this article about Kevin's buried baby.
Rebound award: Michael and Eileen snogging on the sofa. But understandable under the circumstances.
Hilda Odgen award: I was absolutely sure Michael was going to add "Stanley" to that "Womanly" remark.
Let the sucking up begin award: Flowers and a lame apology from Tony.
Memory loss (aka continuity fail): As we've all been saying, Kevin acted as if he didn't know what it was like to bury a child. In fact, this week was the 15th anniversary of the death of his wife Alison and his baby Jake.
If You Can't Be with the One You Love, Love the one you're with: Dev has met someone. But that might not even go anywhere. What to do, what to do?
Fashion Trend: Patterned leggings are everywhere these days. I *loved* Kylie's black and white ones! Even Liz was in on the style with somewhat less success, I must say.
Supporting character win: The character of Callum is a bit, ok, a lot ridiculous. But his two sidekicks, Macca and Gemma are the bomb!!!
Banksy of Weatherfield: Craig. Awww what a star! A memorial murial to Maddie! (but did nobody notice it in progress in the ginnel when they put out their wheely bins?)
Lines of the week:
Julie "Karma. You cheat on your loved ones, look what happens!" (and Dev nearly choked on his wine. Definitely something up there)
Todd about Jason and Eva "Good looks at just the right level of dumb. A match made in heaven"
Michael to Steph "Are you deaf as well as daft?"
Todd "Wake up and smell the hair extensions. She was thick!"
Michael "Inveigled (giggles) I can say it!"
Liz "If he thinks he can get round me with a few poxy roses, which are my second least favourite by the way, well he can forget it"
Kevin "Must be hard burying one of your kids" (you would know, or have you forgotten baby Jake?)
Dev "You don't think I could just break it to her gently?"
David "Hashtag Kylie"
Beth "I’m the one with the stretch marks so I’ll ask the questions thanks" and "That is some serious nozzle control son"
Liz "If Tracy Barlow is nothing else, she's a survivor"
Sarah to Kylie "You can't just turn up after God knows how long" Kylie "Oh, like you did?"

Fat Brenda's Cream Horn
(This post was originally posted by Fat Brenda on the Coronation Street Blog in June 2015, reposted with permission.)
I’ve just got back from seeing Michael at the hospital and I have to say, I think he’s doing pretty well for someone who’s married to Gail – cos he’s still alive!
I’ve just got back from seeing Michael at the hospital and I have to say, I think he’s doing pretty well for someone who’s married to Gail – cos he’s still alive!
“She kept me from
saying goodbye to my son, Brenda” he whined.
“Oh Michael,” I said.
“At least you’ve not been stabbed outside a nightclub or driven into a canal or
tried to fake yer own death and actually died! And as for poor Martin, well he
came off worse…”
“I thought he moved to
Liverpool, Brenda,” he said.
“He did lovey, and if
that wan’t bad enough, he’s now living in Warrington – it’s a fate worse than
death is that!”
Mind you, after what Michael
told me, I’m not surprised he had a heart attack; imagine Eileen trying to tear
yer clothes off! I’ve seen the wild-eyed look she has when she tears the
wrapper off a Kit-Kat let alone a fella and it in’t for the flamin’
faint-hearted I can tell you!

Kylie’s back and I have to say she’s looking very well for someone who’s been in a drugged up stupor for three months and lived on the streets of London wi’ nowt but a manky old Costa coffee cup full of five pees, coppers and broken dreams!
Talking of sleeping rough, poor Maddie’s gone to the great soup kitchen in the sky – poor lass. Sophie’s going round with a face like a wet weekend in Blackpool but I told her, “God moves in mysterious ways lovey, only the good die young and he probably wanted some knickers packing or his car cleaned so he took Maddie to heaven and one day when he needs a petulant lass to work in his shop he’ll take you an’ all!”
It didn’t help though,
you can’t flamin’ help some folk!

“Hello, Streetcars”
“Oh hello, I’d like to
book a taxi for thirteen Coronation Street please.”
“Yes Jenny, where are
you going to, lovey?”
“No, it’s Melanie.”
“What’s Melony? Are
you eating a sorbet or summat, Jenny?”
“No, me name’s
Melanie.”
“Ok then Melanie,
Where are you going to, Jenny?”
“Melanie.”
“Melanie? I’ve never
heard of that, is it in Hale Barnes?”
“No, I told you, me
name’s Melanie.”
“Oh, sorry Jenny.
Where do you want to go, Melanie?”
“To the train station
please, Brenda.”
“How do you know me
name’s Brenda, Melanie?”
“Your name’s Brenda
Melanie?”
“No, Jenny love, how
does Melanie know me name?”
“Who’s Melanie?”
“Look Jenny, stop
playing silly beggars, do you want this taxi or not? Hello? Hello?”
She flamin’ hung up on
me! I tell you loveys, she’s not right that one!
I had that Todd in here the other day, gloating over the way he set his mam up by pretending to be someone from Dubai on a dating site! He was looking so pleased with himself that I thought it was probably the best time to tell him that I’d been doing the same to him for the past fortnight on Grindr!
“What..? You’re Rocco
from Rosamund Street?” he gasped.
“Yes Todd I am! I’m
flamin’ Rocco!”
“But I told you all
about my… fantasies…”
“Yes you did Todd! You
told me all about yer weird He-Man fetish! I have the flamin’ power an’ all
that! Wearing yer undies and that blond wig you fashioned from one of Liz
McDonald’s extension pieces! You flamin’ weirdo!”
“Ooooh but me scar on
me face an’ all that!” he cried.
“What flamin’ scar!?
Do you mean that tiny mark on yer face that looks like it’s been caused by a
sudden rush of air from the gentle flapping of a chaffinch’s wing? There’s nowt
flamin’ there! I’ve seen a paper cut leave a bigger scar than that!”

Who's your all-time favourite Corrie daddy?
As it's Father's Day, we'd like to hear on the blog who's your favourite all-time fave father?
While Corrie's fathers have traditionally not had a brilliant relationship with their children, with the likes of Ken Barlow, Mike Baldwin, Jack Duckworth and Stan Ogden coming to mind. Although the last two developed a strong bond with others like Tyrone and Eddie Yeats.
But there have been others like Tyrone, Steve, Chesney and Kevin who enjoy a close relationship with their children, even though they often are apart from them in their family life.
So who's your all-time favourite dad?

Sunday Comments June 21
Todd set Eileen up. He lured her with the possibility of meeting Jeff in person and then made sure Adrian was there to watch her humiliation when she realized the truth. It really does have a creepy, sick tone when Todd is talking about his mother sleeping naked with her lover, doesn't it? It made what came next even worse. Standing in the middle of a restaurant, insulting everyone he knows, Todd really seemed to be burning all his bridges. Jason thumps him and everyone turns their back on him but yet again, nobody actually disowns him and he leaves under his own steam rather than being shown the door. Which probably means he'll be back and eventually forgiven.
He didn't go for good apparently. Todd is back and Jason's not too pleased to see him. Is Todd still living at home or did he not decamp to a lodging house? Something is niggling in my mind that he did, at one point anyway. Later he does tell Tracy that he's moved out and brags that he gave his family as taste of their own medicine. She warns him it's lonely out there so think on. She knows all about that. Is that an actual flash of Tracy showing humanity?
It's really boring and annoying now, not at all interesting anymore. Taking this kind of humiliating revenge for them blanking him which resulted in his scar, barely noticeable, when he only had himself to blame in the first place is ridiculous. Eileen probably feels guilty that she was the one that made Todd the way he is.
I guess Gail was right. All that stress really was going to give Michael a heart attack! Michael and Eileen are both reeling from recent events and Gail keeps coming round to try to talk to him. Eileen is, for a change, a bit sympathetic but then she doesn't know the story behind the story yet. That changes quickly. Michael gets roaring drunk (and didn't Les Dennis do a great job of it!) and blasts all the cats out of every bag in the Bistro for all to hear. But even worse, when Eileen finally gets him home, they share a laugh at the irony of their situations and end up snogging and the next thing you know, Michael's gasping for breath and on the floor, having a heart attack or similar spell.
Poor Gail, really is in a bad place. Her husband hates her and her enemy is her husband's defender. I think in spite of Eileen feeling like Gail had a lot of it coming by lying to Michael, she does feel a bit sorry for her as well.
Gail's still mooning over Michael who doesn't want anything to do with her. I don't know why Andy thinks Michael would even consider talking to him, either. Oh look, Brian's back and he's come for Julie apparently! Beth gave him the bad news about Julie and Dev.
I really fail to believe that A. Carla would coldly write a cheque and B. Roy would deliver it at a funeral wake. Zeedan and Alya look to be directing their anger towards Carla and Alya has to work for her. Zeedan is really finding it difficult with all his regrets. That's the worst part, having regrets. Carla is still the neighbourhood pariah and though is holding up well, it clearly upsets her because she does feel guilty. She certainly wouldn't be welcome at the funeral under the mistaken circumstances.
Carla's sharing Roy's flat and though he's shared with single women before (Becky) it's always amusing to see his reactions to things like Carla teasing him about people thinking the wrong thing. He just gets this disconcerted look on his face, doesn't he?
Kirk thinks Craig is sleepwalking so Beth and Kirk try to stay awake to catch him. Except Beth's idea of keeping them awake is to play racy games and Craig slipped out unnoticed. Beth and Kirk are still trying to find out what Craig has been up to. Raves and dance parties?
Simon is snarling and glaring and just being thoroughly despicable to Leanne and all that cross his path until he finally loses his temper and biffs a tv remote at Leanne, catching her across the face. Oh dear. He does apologize but she takes him to Ken's to have a bit of time to herself. He's very contrite after, maybe he was afraid she wasn't going to come back for him.
Liz knows Tony will come crawling back eventually and she's ready for him with legal documents that will make him purely a sleeping partner in the pub. The "poxy" roses didn't help matters and I can't imagine why Tony thought they would. It was good to see a flash of the old Liz back, shouting about the poxy roses but still tearful when the door was closed. That's classic landlady stuff, isn't it?
Everyone's on Tracy's case, as per usual and Tracy seems a bit off centre, you know? Guilt, much? Tracy? Maybe. Maybe not. But she's got more of a hate on for Tony at the moment but she still took pleasure in letting Liz know that she was roughed up by Tony's mates in an effort to persuade her to sell up. That's one more blow to her ego. How do you spell "rebound"? For Liz, it's a matter of getting back on the horse and a very nice looking one he is too. He's called Dan and he works at the brewery and he has always fancied Liz. Nick seemed to be a bit green around the eyes when the men were flirting with Liz and Erica.
Sophie is still curious as to what Maddie's message means but Jenny continues to manage to brush it off. Kevin is helping Sophie organize the funeral. Poor Sophie doesn't seem to know which way is up.
Jack's back and Jenny's pleased. Kevin has been living in La La land. He forgot he buried a child of his own. did you catch that? When referring to Maddie's mother, he said it "must be" hard burying one of your kids as if he didn't have that experience. I guess he's forgotten all about Alison and Jake who both died nearly 15 years ago just this week, as it happens. Sophie's holding up, making all the arrangements and nobody seems to know where Maddie's mother is. When last we saw her, though, she was battling mental health issues.
Kevin's been very good with Sophie, supporting her grief. But when she talked to Jenny and Jenny started talking about grief, it seemed clear she was talking about something personal. Sophie's question about Jenny losing her parents was a bit thoughtless. Surely she would know the story of Alan Bradley and the tram and Rita? But wasn't Sally Ann Matthews excellent, yet again! Brooke Vincent has been very good this week as well.
Jenny's going to stay away from the funeral, just as well because though she didn't say so, I don't think Sophie wanted her there anyway. And nobody's surprised to see Jenny used the opportunity unwisely.
Andy's keeping his job at the Bistro for now. Maria and Luke are back together now she realizes he was defending Steph when he thumped Andy. Michelle came back without Steve who wanted to spend a bit of brotherly time with his brother. Liked to see her connecting with Carla. Carla has to have *some* support. The character of Callum is a bit, ok, a lot ridiculous. But his two sidekicks, Macca and Gemma are the bomb!!! Leanne's getting away for a few days to see Gloria in France. I wonder if that will settle Simon down. Wait, can she take him out of school? I thought that was illegal? Or are we at another half-term holiday?
David's life revolves around his missing wife. Connecting with Missing Persons, answering hard questions from Max and battling Callum for Max's affections. Kylie's trying to get the nerve up to go back but is having trouble facing her family. She knows it's all down to her and wouldn't blame them if they never wanted her back. It took her all day but she gathered her nerve together and come home just in time to see that Callum has now got regular access to Max. Shock!
At least Kylie acknowledges that David did throw her out. David isn't so sure the kids should see Kylie, it would upset them, that's true and what if she left again? But she really does seem to be her old self again and she's loaded for bear now that she has Callum to fight. You might ask why Gemma didn't tell Kylie about all this because she did know. She was even in on terrorizing David remember? But she's also scared of Callum coming down on her like a ton of bricks so I reckon that's why she hasn't let on to Kylie about the whole custody thing.
Callum really must have been thrown for a loop though, to see Kylie back judging from a snarky remark Sarah made about Kylie being the constant topic of conversation. But will David let Kylie come back? Sounds like he's going to allow it so that they can face Callum together.
Julie's still living in hope that Dev will propose but is he in that mind set? Mary isn't quite so sure and Dev agrees. He had no intention of proposing and has met someone else. He's met someone and doesn't even know if she feels the same or if anything is even going to happen there but he doesn't seem to want to break up with Julie until he knows. Mary's urging him to do it but he keeps chickening out.
I see Dev has remembered that he is part owner of the gym, putting in a bit of time at the front desk. Julie keeps hinting to Dev about that committment and he's sighing over Talisa.

Corrie build their own graveyard to film Deirdre's funeral
Coronation Street have built their own graveyard for filming Deirdre Barlow's funeral.
According to the Express, a "stately home in Cheshire" has been used for filming the funeral of Deirdre. The Express has pictures of the fake graveyard on their website too.
I've been doing some detective work and the "stately home in Cheshire", if it is indeed the same one as on the Express website, turns out to be Arley Hall and gardens.
The website for Arley Hall says: "The Chapel will be closed from Wednesday 3rd June - Friday 5th June and the Grove will be closed on Wednesday 3rd June." I wonder if this is to allow Corrie to film there this week?
Considering how often Corrie outside filming is snapped by paparazzi photographers, it makes sense for Corrie to create their own graveyard to film in privacy.
Arley Hall and gardens has been used many times before for Coronation Street weddings and funerals.
For Deirdre's funeral, we know that several past characters will be returning. The funeral has been written by scriptwriter Damon Rochefort and (spoiler) Deirdre's death has been explained here.

Meet new Corrie character Talisa
(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog June 2015, reposted to this blog with permission.)
Dev's ladyfriend Talisa turned up on the cobbles this week.
Clearly rattled by the appearance of yet another woman in Dev's life, Julie gets jealous.
On Monday night we saw Julie taking Talisa to task when she quizzes her about how long she plans to stick around. Julie then suggests it's time for Talisa to get a job and suggests she teach yoga at the community centre.
Talisa will be played by actress Samantha Power, who has appeared in Coronation Street before.
She turned up in 1995 as Emma Baxter, a potential purchaser of No. 9 from the Duckworths.
Her role in Coronation Street was one of her first parts but she has since built up a strong CV including A Prince Among Men, Peak Practice, City Central, Where the Heart Is, a regular role in Little Britain and The Cup, Waterloo Road and several parts in Doctors.
Samantha Power's IMDB entry is here.
Let's just hope Talisa isn't another one to add to the T for Trouble blog post!
