Whatever happened to the Coronation Street battle-axe?

What the world needs now is a feisty old bag who says what she means and means what she says. Forget Angela, Hillary and ... err, Theresa. Let's think less global and more cobble. Corrie is currently turning a corner and a welcome change of direction it is too. There are new friendships and alliances, a little less of the drudgery and a bit more fun. However, there is a harridan-shaped hole in Weatherfield.

Every drama needs a mouthy moral majority, laying down the law and not being afraid to do so. In Corrie though, these ladies have been few and far between. They are a rare and wonderful breed, eclipsing the status of backstreet bitch, gossipmonger or fishwife. In reality, the show has only offered up two legends of this ilk and what a pair they were - Ena Sharples and Blanche Hunt.

Ena's brand of wrath was carefully crafted during two world wars and a recession. Religion and morals guided her over the years and helped armour-plate her against whatever life could throw at her. No smart one-liners from Ena. Just a rapier-like delivery of whatever she was dishing out that day. Every battle-axe has their weak points though and for Ena there was a catalogue of handbag fights, name-calling and very un-Christian like behaviour. Few took her on. Elsie Tanner was her regular nemesis for twenty years but she also went to war with Annie Walker and Hilda Ogden amongst others.

Blanche emerged from a different background. She was widowed at a young age and single-handedly raised a wilful daughter. Blanche turned her hand to whatever brought the money in be it as a barmaid, a corset-fitter or a shopkeeper. Early Blanche was a bit of a good-time girl, friendly ear to chew and popular. Twenty years later she had morphed into the un-PC, tough-as-old-boots biddy with a penchant for other people's funerals and caustic one-liners. Blanche also had a vulnerable side and that kept her from becoming one-dimensional, something that obviously wasn't passed down the line to Tracy luv.

There were other pretenders to the throne. Granny Hopkins, presiding over the Corner Shop in the mid 1970s, proved to be little more than nasty. Phyllis Pearce was touted as the 'new Ena' when she first appeared in 1982 but settled for being a gruff old dear with an eye for the fellas. Well, one fella. Maud Grimes shone brightly for a while, another hard woman but importantly, not embittered. Roy's mother Sylvia was wonderful but sadly wasn't around long enough to make a lasting impression.

There were encouraging signs that Deirdre was in the process of picking up the baton from her mother. Not to be. Looking around the current crop of likely characters . . . well, there are no likely characters. Rita lost all of her spit-and-vinegar after Len died and she re-invented herself as Mother Earth in a toffee shop. Gail's too busy nursing Nick's Oedipus Complex, Liz is too flighty and Eileen's a bore. Yasmeen might have a few battle-axe tendencies, likewise Sally, but overall they are decent women.

There were high hopes that Agnes Tinker, Beth's grandma, might have been a stayer. She bobbed around for the wedding episodes, returning later to visit Sinead in hospital but that was that. Likewise, the appearance of actress Beatrice Kelley in 2014, as Michael Rodwell's aunt provided a tiny spike of anticipation but the character was temporary and quite mild-mannered. Maybe ITV should have snapped up Lynda Baron, glorious as Violet Carson in The Road to Coronation Street but alas, she's now doing something in Walford.

Does Corrie need a fearsome older woman patrolling its cobbles? I think it does.

It's an old one but a good one. Does anyone know what year it was from?

Michael Aspel was on the set of Coronation Street when he surprised Sue Nicholls with his big red book for This is Your Life. 

Michael surprised the actress who - at the time - had been on the street for 36 years playing hairdresser Audrey Roberts. Off-screen Sue Nicholls is married to Mark Eden who played the infamous Alan Bradley, father of Jenny.

Corrie Canada sneak previews for Sept. 26 - 30

Without further ado here is a brief sneak preview of what you'll see on  next week's Corrie in Canada.

The development project moves ahead in spite of Todd's efforts to stop it. Todd and Billy fall out so Todd turns to Phelan to help with the scam. What's he up to? Beth's lies and a skeleton from her past come back to bite her. Cathy feels like she will always come second in Roy's heart. Alya suspects Sonia and Sharif so Sharif is some scrambling to do with her and Sonia both. Freddie and Audrey get closer but is it too soon? Cathy finds out a secret about Alex's father.

Coronation Street - Pedro Almodóvar style

I'm a huge fan of the work of Pedro Almodóvar, the Spanish film director, screenwriter, producer and former actor.  This week I went to a preview screening of his new film Julieta which I enjoyed a great deal.  

It prompted me to think about an Almodóvar-Coronation Street mash-up blog post...

Death, Grief, David, Gail and the bloodied jacket.

I am amazed at and not a little cross with Gail. If David chooses to keep the jacket he was wearing when he held Kylie in his arms as she lay dying, then that is his business and the business of no one else.

Yes, it is soaked with blood, Kylie's blood, the blood of the woman he loved, the mother of his children, the love of his life and his best friend. Who in fact has any right at all to decide what a grieving person should or should not retain as a keepsake of the deceased? A blood-soaked jacket is neither a conventional nor a traditional souvenir, but for a man drowning in grief, it is no one else's place to criticise.

She may be his mother and want the best for him, but Gail's attempts to console and advise are no help to David. Why is she so freaked out that he took the clothing out of the bin? Grief is powerful, it's raw and people in the grip of profound grief will not act wholly rationally. What's more, Gail must have a short memory as she was deeply affected by the death of husband Joe.

Gail tells him that he will not be able to 'move on' if he holds on to the bloodied jacket. Move on?! What? Kylie has only been dead for five minutes! It would seem wrong, somehow shoddy and insensitive for David to 'move on' just yet. and what does 'move on' mean in this context anyway? Find another girlfriend/wife/best friend? Or simply put the whole business behind him as if Kylie's brutal murder in the street in broad daylight was just  'one of those things' - and therefore not to be made a fuss about. 'Pick yourself up, dust yourself down and start all over again!'

David maintains his silence as Gail pleads, and after she finishes talking, he coolly tells his mother to 'Put it back.'

Then, he cuts off Lauren's hair and sends a friend message to Kylie's killer. Excellent! Bad David makes a return.

Picking Your Corrie Favourites

The other day on Twitter I was asked to pick my seven favourite Coronation Street characters. An enjoyable bit of fun but it probably reveals more about ourselves, what we like and what we don't than we might immediately think. 

For anyone interested, my pick of characters were: Alma Baldwin, Audrey Roberts, Hilda Ogden, Betty Turpin, Annie Walker, Ena Sharples and Elsie Tanner. For those who know me there aren't many surprises there. Of course they are all women but that's not necessarily surprising as the foundations of Corrie have always been strong, vibrant female characters. Also, only one of my top seven are currently appearing in the show - Audrey. The rest are either dead on screen or in real life. 

I've always said I prefer much of what has gone before in Corrie than what we have now and that's not to say there aren't plenty of positives today before anyone cuts in! My friend and fellow blogger Emma also took part and she went the other way, choosing seven male characters. I was surprised by this, particularly in her penchant for Pat Phelan and Peter Barlow, but perhaps she was having an off day...

 

Anyway, with daft games like this it's sometimes more about who you leave out than who you include. For me, there were a few who nearly made the cut - Mavis, beautifully brought to life by that wonderful actress Thelma Barlow and yes, two men - Mike Baldwin, the best, more enduring Corrie character I've loved to hate and that lovable rogue Jack Duckworth portrayed by the sublime Bill Tarmey for so many years.

One of the hardest choices was not to include either Emily or Rita. If I had to pick I'd probably go for Emily as Eileen Derbyshire has kept her closest to her original character. Emily has matured in an extremely believable way and Derbyshire's quiet, non-showy performances are perhaps only know seen for what they are now she's no longer in the show. By the way, ITV , is Emily ever coming back? If Eileen has decided to quietly withdraw, please just tell us so we can respect her decision, wish her well and move on.

My Seven Corrie Wonders

A very interesting discussion emerged on Twitter this week, which the lovely Graeme has already dedicated a brilliant blog to in Picking Your Favourites. We were asked to do just that, and narrow it down to seven.

A couple of names immediately sprung to mind, and I wondered if I should go with my gut, or give it some thought; after all there are a lot of characters to choose from, and just because they don’t instantly come to mind, might not mean they aren’t a favourite. My seven, as it turned out, arose from a mixture of thought and instinct, and here they are:

Peter Barlow

Todd Grimshaw

Liz McDonald

David Platt

Roy Cropper

Ken Barlow

Pat Phelan

As Graeme says, the exercise did reveal more about ourselves than we might have thought it could, and I managed to surprise not only him with my choices, but myself as well.

The first thing of note was that six out of my seven were men, while most people tweeting on #7favcorriecharacters were choosing women, and almost exclusively at that, including our Graeme. In my case, even the ones I had laboured over, but who didn’t make the list, were mainly male.

As I picked them purely because they are my favourites, I wondered what my choices said about me, and how they might reveal what I enjoy best in a Corrie character. Here's what I learned: 

• My six men all have one thing in common; they’re not afraid to stand up for themselves. My sole lady, Liz, is the same.
• With the exception of Phelan, there is a vulnerability to them.
• I love Phelan regardless.
• My male choices don’t fit the strong women and mithered men trope. Okay, most men on Corrie find themselves henpecked at some point, but these are more likely to resist it, answer back or reach a point where they’ve had enough, and are not afraid to say so. I admire this in them.

So, Graeme has asked you to try and pick your seven favourite characters. What I want you to tell me is, what do you think your selection says about you and what you enjoy in a character?

Corrie Canada weekly awards Sept. 12 - 16

Green Eyed Monster: Sean tried to scupper the posh hotel night that Todd set up for he and Billy.

The Truth is Out There: Jenny and Johnny's relationship has been discovered. And they were both unrepentant.

You're Nicked award: Turns out Craig's father is in prison. I thought Craig didn't know who he was. But if his name is on the birth certificate, the police must have found out that way.

Hero award: Wasn't Gary awesome with the school Head?

Hypocrite award: Nick giving Steve a hard time for sleeping with Leanne when he did the same with Kylie on a drunken one nighter. And where does he get off insisting Steve leave town? And all the things Nick said about Steve, you could just as easily say about him. Rat. Devious. Manipulative. Selfish.

Twisted Sister: Lauren tried to turn it all around on Bethany when her mother already knew her daughter was a bully months ago and wasn't surprised then.

Did they or Didn't they? When Todd and Billy made up and made out, or so at least it looked like they were about to go up them stairs. Yet when Todd turned up, bags in hand, he remarked that he thought they could take things to that next level.

Aidan "What's the word I'm looking for? Hypocrite!"

Reasons to be cheerful about Coronation Street

Although there are a few frustrations with Coronation Street at the moment (and you can read about those here), there's a lot I'm currently loving about our favourite show.

Over the last few weeks I've noticed a stronger Coronation Street, a better Coronation Street. The acting has been of a better calibre than in recent months, the writing tighter, the scenes more heightened and the drama more compelling. 

Has anyone else noticed this, or am I viewing things through rose-tinted Corrie specs?

The first thing I'm loving is that the new producer Kate Oates is now at the helm. I understand that her storylines won't be shown until next month, but she's got her name above the door now. The new producer is most definitely IN.

Putting Sean and Norris together could be a match made in heaven. Since Sean arrived in Coronation Street 13 years ago, he's always lived with Eileen.  Moving him out of what has become his home and in with busy-body of the Street could be comedy gold. I hope, also, we'll see a great deal of pathos between these two lonely (and often quite nasty) men.

I'm also loving the on-screen chemistry between Leanne and Nick.  These are two characters I'm not right fond of individually but there's something about them both together that works - and it works really well.  I never felt Nick and Carla were suited but Leanne and Nick are a match made in soap heaven and a real joy to watch.

And Audrey's infatuation with Luke is a joy to watch too.



Speaking of Audrey, this leads me to think about Freddie, who has been a great addition to the cast. But it's not just individual characters that are driving Corrie forward at the moment, it's the types of characters, the strength of them.  In Freddie and Johnny Connor we've got a new type of Corrie alpha male, and one that is great fun to watch.

Of course, Corrie is still missing a battle-axe and a siren but with the promised return of three characters  - I think the future's looking bright on Coronation Street.

Sunday Comments September 18

Craig has turned 18. All grown up! He got the letter in reply to his application and the man, he say no! It's to the Special Constabulary which sounds a bit like unpaid community service but apparently it's a police constable but without the power to make arrests. Anyway, Craig was rejected because he didn't declare someone with a criminal conviction. His father. And Beth knew. It's his father. And his mother was the one that put him in prison. He knew his mother lied about lots of stuff but this is a big one. Even Kirk wasn't very happy with Beth, shutting him out when he's supposed to be family. Beth might be in danger of losing everything. Craig really can't get his head around it and he's so angry with his mother. He ended up staying at Tim's.

Beth is trying to soothe Kirk with the smell of bacon but he'd already left for work because he's still ticked off with her. Craig is bereft, and he's retrieved his rat for comfort. Sally even allowed it. I'm shocked. Michelle's recollection of Sally playing peacemaker with her and Ryan has given Beth an idea. Hearing Beth heartbroken over Craig got Kirk talking to her again at least and they made up. Hearing Tim's regrets over how he messed up fatherhood got Craig thinking about how good a mother he really does have. He wants Sally to play peacemaker.

Sally's holding a mediation session and Kirk seems to think she's getting her hopes up too high. It all seemed to be going well. Craig seemed to be understanding. Everyone talked and with Sally's guidance. Craig said some good things but Beth really didn't take in what he actually said and that sent him off again, his mother doesn't listen. He's got a point.

Gemma's campaign to better herself seems to have hit a rough patch. Dev knows how to handle it, he made her Assistant Manager which he knows is really a pretend position seeing as there's only her and Chesney in the shop anyway but it made her happy and maybe she'll turn up for work on time! Dev's explanation gave Phelan an idea.

Vinny and Phelan are busy organizing while they wait for the planning permission. Eileen thinks they need a special company name for the project and it would make it seem more legit. Vinny doesn't seem to have a lot of patience for Eileen wanting to be involved and I wonder if Phelan hasn't bitten off more than he expected to chew when Vinny threw out veiled threats about Eileen if he doesn't keep her away from their dealings. Phelan's way of dealing with her is to give her a pretend position, a Concepts Executive. It'll keep her busy and out of their business. But Todd shot it down in a minute, seeing exactly what Phelan's doing but she wasn't having any of it. Eileen is so blind to Phelan that she ended up suggesting Todd leave. Thus, at least for the minute, Phelan's won again.

Sean dragged himself home in the morning after a night out though Billy was a bit put off. Don't know why. He's supposed to be happy with Todd. Meanwhile, Todd is setting up a posh hotel for he and Billy but Sean overheard him and later Eva and Michelle gusthing. Green eyed monster, I'd say. Eva overheard Sean cancelling the room and scolded him roundly. He must have rebooked it. In the meantime, Todd and Billy had a romantic meal out and, not knowing there had been a problem, Todd's surprised was busted by the hotel staff who confirmed his booking in person. Surprise!

It looked like Todd and Billy might finally break the seal, so to speak. But Todd's stupid joke made Billy back off. Maybe Todd is right, maybe Billy is scared to get into another relationship and is picking up on anything he can to make excuses. At least Todd seems to be taking responsibility for his own actions. Eva encouraged them to get their heads together and talk it out and they did. Awww. It also had the effect of breaking that seal I was talking about and they were up them stairs! I think. Or maybe not but Todd ended up with his bags in hand on Billy's doorstep after that row with his mother over Phelan. Billy didn't look too sure about that and it sounded like maybe they hadn't taken it to that next level. I'm confused.

The strike is still on. And they're still trying to figure out who the spy is. Johnny refuses to reveal who is was and is digging his heels in. He's not giving in! Aidan tried to negotiate with cakes and double pay to finish the order. He even picked the fanciest cakes and Izzy was the first one to crack, at least with the cakes. Jenny decided to run inside on an excuse and at least three of them agreed and then asked to get off early for Craig's birthday. Jenny was updating Johnny and Aidan and everyone else caught them in a snog. Busted! The Truth is Out There!

They all know Jenny is the spy and she's going to take some stick for it. Aidan is determined not to trust Jenny and it's for sure the rest of the workers don't.

And Aidan is still looking for excuses not to move in with Eva. She thinks she and Aidan will have the whole flat to themselves but things aren't looking good between Nick and Leanne. They certainly had the office all to themselves and that might have changed his mind.

Audrey's salon is nominated for an award. At least Caz making tracks looking for a job so Maria's helping her. They got a bit squiffy over a bottle of wine and it looks very much like Caz is developing a crush. Gail is expecting Michael to move back in. Wonder what the eta is? In the meantime, she found David's bloodied hoodie in David's room, the one he supposedly binned. She's back to worrying al over again.

Liz is giving Steve the silent treatment for trying to kick her out of her own pub (but it's Steve and Michelle's name over the door even if she did put in an investment). Then Leanne gave her a hard time too. She's going to crack, is Liz. She's going to end up shouting it from the rooftops! I want to be there when it happens! Maybe the realization that it really would break up his marriage will pull Liz back from the edge.

Nick and Leanne are looking at baby names, first and last, and bickering over dinner guests. But his request for them never to keep each other in the dark has jiggled her guilt and she admitted it Steve was the father and that Steve knows and Nick did not take it well. It gets better. What's he going to do when he finds out Michelle is pregnant, too? He has nightmares of Steve wanting to be involved, of Steve's presence always there as a reminder. He's right, too. It's a nearly impossible situation. Poor Nick. He seems to be the new version of Curly Watts, Loser in Love. I can see his point, I really can.

Nick is not a happy bunny this morning in the aftermath of the revelation about Steve. He's maintaining radio silence with Leanne and has decided to confront Steve in his typically vile Nick way. He took Steve to a deserted area and threatened him, and pretended to text Michelle that Steve was Leanne's baby daddy. Of course he didn't actually do it but it put the fright into Steve. If i was Steve I'd be sorely tempted to clock one on Nick's jaw.

Nick can really be a low life sometimes, controlling and vindictive. I know he's afraid Steve will want a relationship with the baby but he had no right to insist that Steve move away. If that's how he feels, then Nick should move. He was ready to leave with Carla after all. And what a hypocrite!! He's calling Steve out for that one night stand which both Steve and Leanne regret and call a mistake. Hey Nick, remember Kylie? Your brother's wife and you didn't know for sure if her baby was yours or not, either.

And all Nick wants is his name on the birth certificate? Really? So his next move is to book them a holiday *and* pack for her. Arrogant sod. I really can't see Leanne and Nick going the distance, can you?

Lauren seems to have stepped up the tirade against Bethany. Surely that teacher overheard Lauren from around the corner. She wasn't whispering. But Gary came into the school to report Lauren. Wasn't he a hero with the school head!

Sarah saw Bethany talking to and thanking Gary and leaped to the wrong conclusion. But Bethany has to go to a school meeting with Lauren and her mother and is dreading it. She doesn't want to tell her mother but Gary's insisting except when Gary realizes Sarah thinks he's up to no good with Bethany, and when Bethany realizes what Sarah thought, she confessed. She did the right thing and she apologized to Gary so now Sarah can defend her chick and she's asked Gary to come to the meeting for support.

But Sarah has a habit of speaking before she thinks. How did the meeting go? As expected, Lauren tried to blame it all on Bethany when you know very well her mother had already known she was bullying Bethany months ago and wasn't surprised. In the end both girls got suspended and it didn't sound like anything was actually resolved.

Ofcom reject complaints about Corrie's Todd and Billy bed scene

170 people complained about Todd and Billy's bed scene which was aired the other night on Coronation Street.  Actor Daniel Brocklebank, who plays Billy the vicar Mayhew in Corrie, took to Twitter after the episode aired, to hit back at homophobic abuse.

Ofcom, the UK’s broadcast regulator, has dismissed those 170 complaints.

Ofcom said: “We considered a number of complaints objecting to two male characters kissing in this episode, but won’t be investigating. Our rules do not discriminate between scenes involving opposite sex and same sex couples. Also the scenes were not in any way sexually explicit. For these reasons they were not scheduled inappropriately and did not exceed generally accepted standards.”
