Corrie A-Z: H is for Hotpot
(This post was originally posted by Llifon on the Coronation Street Blog in June 2013.)
People have always presumed that Betty’s hotpot has been in the Rovers since she became barmaid in 1969. In fact, the hotpot didn’t make its debut until 1973. And for nearly 40 years, it has been an undisputed Corrie icon. Over the years, its future has been in the balance but has managed to survive on the pub menu – despite Alec Gilroy’s attempts to take it off! Even though Betty has passed away, the hotpot is still an integral part of the Rovers Return menu and still bears her name.

Deirdre Barlow: Queen of Coronation Street
(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog July 2013, reposted to this blog with permission.)
If Corrie had its King Ken, then Deirdre Barlow arise, for you are our new Queen of Coronation Street. How good has Deirdre been in the last few weeks with no Ken to hold her back?
Last night, throwing Rob and Tracy out of the house and then dishing up advice to Carla: "Just think of me as Switzerland in glasses", Deirdre really shone. And she rescued Roy from the Red Rec last week: "I thought it was one of them nutters but then I thought, hang on, no, I know this one!"
Anne Kirkbride is an absolute joy to watch as Deirdre and while Ken's away, let's hope Deirdre gets a chance to shine up her jelly mould and play her harmonica with pride.

Corrie Canada weekly awards for July 22 - 26
My Work Here is Done award: David is really playing Leanne and Nick off against each other. Then more or less telling Nick that he would plot behind someone's back though disguised it as a conversation about someone else to provoke Nick into losing his temper. Result!
Pants on Fire award: Ryan is pretending he's happy with Katy and there's nothing to worry about.
TMI award: Stella has the mobile waxer in? Something tells me it's not about the linoleum. Gail has her mobile phone with her in the bath.
Hanging on to the past award: Chesney can't let go of Katy and keeps getting in her business.
Excuse du Jour: Kevin's off to mind his dad, Ken's off to mind his grandson.
Lunatic award: Well, Tracy is that. A genius? not so much.
Excuses Excuses award: Paul won't apologize because: He's had a bad day. His name is being dragged throught he mud.
Razzle Dazzle award: Deirdre showed Tracy how it was done. Sort of.
Ironic award: Tracy moaning how rude people are.
Lines of the Week:
Mary "I half expected to be strip searched and I'm not dressed for it"
Eileen "If this was confidential, do you think I would have told the Foghorn Brothers?"
Eileen "I like my men to be men. Treat me mean and keep me keen."
David to Leanne "What's up with you? You've got a face longer than Celine Dion" (ha!)
Carla "I've seen better figures in a plus sized catalogue"
Ryan "It's too much too soon, wasn't it?" (For you anyway)
Steve "It's tighter than a bullfighter's pants, but I shall prevail"
Rob to a pretend-pregnant Tracy "I don't know whether you're a lunatic or a genius" (If you think she's a genius, you are no smarter than she isn't)
Steve to Lloyd "I've always enjoyed your pluck. It's gorgeous!"
Carla about Steve and Streetcars"A few knackered old bangers that he co-owns with Lloyd and runs out of a broom cupboard?"
Sophie to Paul "Who do you want to serve you then? The Asian or the Lesbian?"
Deirdre "You can't boil an egg in a bidet"

Corrie cast members set up in Dispatches sting, says The Mirror
The award winning investigative current affairs programme Dispatches on Channel 4 has stitched up some of the Coronation Street cast good and proper, says The Mirror today.
Dispatches set up a fake stall at a Celebrity Retreat event offered “luxury” tonics and creams supposedly from Bali, Indonesia. But none of the items was genuine. A blue bottle of “toner” contained nothing but tap water, despite its impressing sounding label “Puttana Aziendale” – which actually translates as “Corporate Prostitute” in Italian.
And the cameras were secretly rolling as stars and executives from Corrie asked for handfuls of free products in exchange for plugs.
However, The Mirror quotes an ITV source saying: “Allegations have been made that are false and highly defamatory, and ITV have written to the producer threatening legal action if they decide to broadcast the programme.”

Sunday Comments - July 28
The drugs raid was actually quite funny. The ambitious reporter was winding everyone up, Mary was musing about what could have been and then off to spread the gossip to Norris before anyone else did. David was watching it all unfold and playing Leanne and Nick off against each other and Kylie was strutting around righteously because she knows drugs. She does. And there aren't any in the Bistro. David did a very good job because the night ended as a disaster.
We started the next episode at the end of the day, at teatime. But I thought there wasn't a story in the Gazette, Kylie said so, but then there was. It's not as if there is a morning and an afternoon edition, or is there? David is gleeful. Of course Leanne isn't going to be happy with that lame "I'm sorry" Nick gave her. If he'd told her the whole thing that he said to Kylie, she might have been. He's an idiot. But they made up so David's next move is to water down the booze at the Bistro.
I don't think it's fair that Owen is bullying Tim and Tim is also right about Anna babying Faye but then, as Anna said, Faye's emotional development was arrested due to her childhood. I do like that Sally is sticking up for Tim and she's talking sense. If Tim leaves it will be another damaging blow to Faye, won't it?
Eileen did go to the councilling session and then was teased unmercifully in the pub and supported by Peter and, eventually, Paul who's clueless as usual. Looks like Paul got into trouble over harassing some kids that were throwing rocks at the firemen. Isn't that always the way? You get provoked but you're not supposed to kick back and when you do, you're the one that gets in trouble for it. Similar things happen when a homeowner attacks a burglar and the homeowner gets arrested for assault.
Paul's under investigation and he's back into self-absorbed mode again. Lloyd and Mandy are at odds over Jenna. Ok, Paul's allowed to be angry and stressed about his situation. Mandy is allowed to be disappointed that Jenna threw away her career and Lloyd is caught in the middle. That's what led to a big blow up over a throwaway remark that Paul came out with in the pub that Lloyd felt was racist. So did everyone else apparently.
And Paul? He realized it was the wrong thing to say so why didn't he just say those two little words, I'm Sorry. That would have put an end to it before everyone else got into the mix but of course, then, there wouldn't have been a storyline.
Paul's Pride is not a good thing and Eileen is stuck in the middle. Yes, he should apologize, first at least. If he does, Lloyd will probably apologize for calling him a racist.
Lloyd has accused Paul of being a racist and now, Paul won't back down and neither will Lloyd. Paul should have apologized and then Lloyd would have too. Both sides dug their heels in and it's all escalated. Lloyd expects an apology and he should get it but then Lloyd should apologize to Paul and yes, Paul's apology comes first.
Chesney tried to tell Katy, he did. She didn't believe it but it's sowed the seed and Kirk and Beth confirmed it. She found messages on his phone but he lied about that, too. Now she's firmly in denial but the damage has been done. These two as a couple are pretty much done. Ryan is spineless and Katy is gormless, Chesney is spiteful and Sinead is a fool.
Sinead and Chesney are all cute and couple-y but he is still very aware of Katy and any mention of her. And when Sinead suggested they go upstairs, he looked like a deer caught in the headlights. He won't go upstairs because he's not in love with her and he won't admit it, but no, he's not over Katy and seeing her and Ryan rowing, he couldn't stay out of it when it really wasn't any of his business.
Katy is suspicious and so she should be and the bickering begins. Then she's slinking around stalking Ryan trying to catch him in his lies. Shouldn't be very difficult. She pushed and provoked and he came out with it. He didn't want the whole family package and Chesney saw them rowing outside. Owen was quite happy to say I Told You So. Katy's moved into the overcrowded Windass house. Why doesn't Owen let her use the flat now that Ryan's not involved? Michelle gets to run ragged over Ryan, too.
Katy made a beeline back to Chesney now that she's left Ryan. Well she's been saying she'd made a mistake all along and she only went to Ryan because Chesney wouldn't have her back. He still won't and he's decided to make it up with Sinead. I like her but I don't think she's suited to Chesney, not least because he is only using her anyway.
Carla is not ignoring her investment in the bookies and Peter's not comfortable with it. And now it seems like the business isn't doing that well after all. Was picking up when Rob was there, did Peter not keep up whatever he was doing? Why is Rob's job as a bailiff breaking his parole conditions? Is he working for the local loan shark? Now the gruesome twosome are thinking about launching a business, they called a cash converter. That's just a fancy word for pawn broker.
Peter's scrambling to try to keep the business afloat and Carla thinks it's on it's last legs and is worried how it will affect Peter. The bookies is teetering but Underworld is booming it seems. Rob is having a great time yanking Peter's chain. Deirdre knows what Rob is doing for work doesn't she? I'm surprised the news didn't filter through to Peter. Peter is egging people on to make bigger bets, and the odds were that he'd lose out because Steve won big. Well if the punters are coming in and spending their money, why doesn't Peter have more cash in the safe? Carla wasn't happy to find out about the win. Meanwhile, Tracy is discouraged with her job. Well, you would.
And there's the excuse for Ken's absence, Adam his grandson is ill and he's gone off to be with him. In Canada. Who said we wanted either of them here? And when did Adam move to Canada anyway? Why didn't they just say Portsmouth where he was the last time we heard of him? Emily is signing over her house. Norris looks chuffed. I really think he's going to get a big surprise. Gloria is part Cherokee, related to someone from a Buffalo Bill show. Ah, and Deirdre has said there's a new doctor in the clinic, not a patch on Dr. Carter. Probably because she's a middle aged woman, not a hunky young fella!
Roy's doing yoga at 6 a.m.and is throwing himself into relaxation full steam. But all is not well in Cropper Towers. Hayley has had to go back to discuss her test results. Has anyone else got a bad feeling?

Barbara Knox gets a Corrie stunt double
(This post was originally posted by Stevie Dawson on the Coronation Street Blog in June 2013.)
A few years have passed since a Manchester tram almost flattened Rita in the Kabin, and there hasn't been too much action in her life since then that would require actor Barbara Knox to require a body double. However, on the Daily Mail website today they reveal an upcoming storyline that shows just that.
The Coronation Street Blog revealed last week that Tina, distraught after giving up baby Jake to Izzy and Gary, will try to numb the pain with alcohol, and this leads to a scene in the park where Rita, searching for Tina, comes across a group of yobs.
Despite the difficult scenes, of which there are some great photos in the article, it appears it was quite a fun day of filming for Barbara and her colleagues:
"...she (Barbara) seemed to enjoy having a clone beside her as the two ladies chatted animatedly during a break from the cameras, while the extra wore a wig to match Barbara's hair."
So while most of us hate the thought of any harm coming to our lovely Rita, at least we know actress Barbara Knox had a nice day in the park!

How can Underworld be flourishing?
(This post was originally posted by Graeme N on the Coronation Street Blog in June 2013.)
I just don't understand it. How can the Coronation Street faktry be doing so well during the economic downturn? Apart from a convenient plot device to allow the gruesome Rob and Tracy more airtime, I just don't get it.
People have long commented on this blog that back street factories like Underworld are few and far between these days. Tough economic circumstances across the country are forcing many of these small businesses under. Corrie has been somewhat slow to react to the recession on screen, however while it finally has got its act together, I think it has picked on the wrong business. Yes, it looks like Barlow's Bookies has had its day.
Bookies are still ten a penny as far as I can see, and most people would still buy a lottery ticket, so why would Peter's business suddenly go wrong? Meanwhile Carla's little empire is going from strength to strength and other businesses like Nick and Leanne's "posh" Bistro don't appear to be faltering either.
So how can Underworld be so prosperous? As long as the Connors have been in charge it seems to have lurched from one financial crisis to the next. It's been burned to the ground by a mad Scotsman (no, not me) and has such a high staff turn over I half expect to see Emily Bishop stitching gussets next. The current workforce aren't exactly go-getters either are they? Fiz has put in about two and a half shifts in the past 10 years and as for what Beth and Kirkeh manage to get up to in Packing, heaven only knows. Most of the staff spend longer on cake runs than they do behind sewing machines.
As for the current management, well they leave a lot to be desired. Carla has swapped Mike Baldwin's bottom drawer bottle of Scotch for a case of Pinot Noir and spends most of her time refereeing tedious fights between boyfriend Peter and boring brother Rob. And as for Michelle? As I've pondered before, where has her sudden business acumen come from? She's gone from crooning in back street bars and pulling pints to scoring major knicker orders faster than a script conference can cry "this character desperately needs a new direction!"
No, as far as I'm concerned this current knicker stitching boom in Weatherfield is just all thong, I mean wrong. It can really only be a matter of time until the bottom falls out of the market...

Corrie A-Z: H is for Honours
(This post was originally posted by Llifon on the Coronation Street Blog in June 2013.)
The earliest to receive an honour was Doris Hare who received an MBE by George VI back in 1943. Known to play Martha Longhurst in the dry runs of Corrie in 1960 and who turned down the role of Ena Sharples, she then went on to play Albert Tatlock’s fiancée Alice Pickens between 1968 and 1969.
Over the years, regular members of the cast have received their share of honours:
Violet Carson (Ena Sharples) – OBE in 1965
Doris Speed (Annie Walker) – MBE in 1977
Jack Howarth (Albert Tatlock) – MBE in 1983
Julie Goodyear (Bet Lynch) – MBE in 1996
Betty Driver (Betty Turpin) – MBE in 1999
Elizabeth Dawn (Vera Duckworth) – MBE in 2000
Bill Kenwright (Gordon Clegg) – CBE in 2000
William Roache (Ken Barlow) – MBE in 2001
Stephanie Cole (Sylvia Goodwin) – OBE in 2005
Johnny Briggs (Mike Baldwin) – MBE in 2006
Roy Barraclough (Alec Gilroy) – MBE in 2006
Anne Reid (Valerie Barlow) – MBE in 2010
Barbara Knox (Rita Sullivan) – MBE in 2010
Eileen Derbyshire (Emily Bishop) – MBE in 2010
Corrie’s creator Tony Warren received and MBE in 1976 while one of the soap’s most prolific writers Jack Rosenthal received a CBE in 1994.
Famous faces who’ve appeared on the cobbles and who’ve received honours include Ian McKellen, Ben Kingsley, Patrick Stewart, Prunella Scales, June Brown, Patricia Routledge, Beryl Bainbridge, Norman Wisdom and Joanna Lumley.
Grocer, councillor and mayor Alf Roberts received an OBE by the Queen in 1995 and travelled down to London in Don Brennan’s taxi along with wife Audrey with hilarious consequences. The end of the story was that Audrey missed out on visiting the Palace with Alf and it was in fact his mayoress Betty Turpin that accompanied him, much to Audrey’s chagrin!
Are there any other Corrie stars that deserve an honour by the Queen? Thelma Barlow? Jean Alexander?

What do you think of Lloyd's new storyline?
(This post was originally posted by Graeme N on the Coronation Street Blog in June 2013.)
So what do we think of the much heralded racism storyline so far? It certainly all kicked off in the Rovers last night.
Brian was gobsmacked, Deirdre was keeping out of it and Gloria couldn't see what all the fuss was about. This is obviously highlighting a very important issue and one that Coronation Street hasn't really covered in the past, mainly due to the lack of a regular group of black characters.
So far, this story is working for me. Yes, it is covering a big issue, but in my opinion it is not yet issue-led. The writers are managing to make this all about the characters, and as this involves Lloyd, it is bound to be good. Craig Charles is one of my absolute favourites in Corrie and this should give him a chance to shine.
It will also be interesting to see the wonderful trio of Eileen, Steve and Lloyd tackle some serious material. They have great chemistry and I love the lighthearted banter, but it will be great to see how this changes things between them.
The only weak spot in this for me is Paul. I know the character will be departing our screens this year and thank goodness! I am so fed up with him! While this storyline has some strong aspects, Paul's involvement is just not one of them.
However, I for one will be interested to see where the writers take this storyline in the coming weeks.

Fab Photo Friday - Hairnet-less Ena
(This post was originally posted by Sunny Jim on the Coronation Street Blog July 2013, reposted to this blog with permission.)
It's Friday again so it's time for this week's fab Coronation Street photo. Many apologie's for last weeks rogue apostrophe's Ill try to make sure it doesnt happen agai'n. After publishing Flaming Nora's excellent interview with Corrie's original head of Wardrobe, Edna Walker, all the talk here at Coronation Street Blog towers is of the original cast, so here's a picture of the snug triumvirate with the Cheveskis in the background. Notice that Ena is without her famous hairnet, so this is a very early picture indeed.

Idiots abound on Corrie this week and other thoughts
I enjoyed Corrie this week really but I kept thinking, while watching, that there were a lot of idiots on the street this week. People just keep getting it wrong, don't they?
Katy, Chesney, Sinead, Ryan, Paul, Lloyd, Nick, Leanne, Kylie, Gail, Tim. They're all idiots for various reasons.
Why? Here's why. Maybe you'll agree and maybe you won't. But it was still a good week on Corrie with several new storylines ramping up including the Gruesome Twosome (Tracy and Rob) deciding to go into business together.
Now that Katy and Ryan have split up, can Ryan please just disappear? Tim and Sally are flirting. I suppose that can only end one way. Tim is just as weak and feckless as most of Sally's fellas but it's nice to see her in a storyline and she does deserve a bit of fun.
Another thought passed through, about Jenna and Sophie. When they first got together, people wondered why overqualified and educated Jenna was bothering with college drop out Sophie. There were some people that thought that Jenna could at least encourage Sophie to go back to school. But Jenna threw her career away and she's not making much headway into getting back into any sort of professional job which isn't really going to set up much of an example for Sophie, is it? She's not going to bother getting an education if she sees someone with qualifications and experience not able to get a job.
And while we're on that subject, why haven't we had any sort of focus on their relationship? When Sophie and Sian were together, we had lots of scenes with the two of them and saw how their relationship was going, bumps and all. Once we got over the initial get together for Jenna and Sophie, they've completely fallen off the radar. I want to see them struggle to get to know each other, get around their differences and find out what they have in common. I want to see them do more than just cross paths in the shop or have a drink in the Rovers.
We've not see Fiz and Tyrone for awhile. I assume things are floating along smooth waters for them these days. Dev is taking a breather too as have the Price family. I suppose things will hot up there before summer's out. I'm really looking forward to seeing Karl get what's coming to him!

Street's make-up lady starts Corrie choir for cast and crew
(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog July 2013, reposted to this blog with permission.)
There's a story in today's Sun that says Coronation Street's started a choir. That bit's true. The Sun also says, via our old mate Mr Curry Sauce, that the choir's been started by management to boost morale as the Street suffers from actors William Roache and Micheal Le Vell, er, missing in action and the Corrie twitter plugging 'scandal'.
Well, that's not quite true.
Gilly Walsh works in hair and make-up on Coronation Street and took to twitter today to put the record straight about the Corrie choir. Gilly's on twitter @gillywalshy and here are her tweets from today. Gilly was the one who set up the Corrie cast and crew choir - an excellent idea and I can't wait to hear them in full song. I wonder if they'll be better than this!

Coronation Street's amazing prop store
(This post was originally posted by Graeme N on the Coronation Street Blog in July 2013.)
I really enjoyed ITV's recent celebration of all things Granada, Goodbye Granadaland. (Watch it on YouTube here) The lovely Flaming Nora even blogged about it right here.
That fabulous prop room seemed to be acting as home to everything from costumes and wigs to gravestones and even set designs.
This made me think about posing the following question: If you found yourself with access to that Corrie treasure trove for the afternoon, what item in particular would you go searching for? What would be your biggest and most cherished find?
It might be the glasses Hilda Ogden's cried over after Stan's death? Or maybe a set of Bet Lynch's infamous earrings? What about one of Rita's delightfully tasteless sparkly woollen creations from the 1980s?
Personally, I'd love to try on Deirdre's re-entry shield glasses from the 1970s. What a pair!
So what about you?

Corrie A-Z: H is for Hair
(This post was originally posted by Llifon on the Coronation Street Blog in June 2013.)
Our hairstyle is a definable part of our style and personality and the characters of Coronation Street are no different.
Our hairstyle is a definable part of our style and personality and the characters of Coronation Street are no different.
There’s the red hair of fiery Rita Fairclough, Elsie Tanner, Irma Ogden, Suzie Birchall, Jenny Bradley, Fiz Brown and Teresa Bryant and then there’s the perms of prim and proper Annie Walker and Emily Bishop.
Both Bet Lynch and Deirdre Barlow have adapted different hairdos over the years while Hayley Cropper’s had the same do for 15 years! Hilda Ogden kept her hair tidy with curlers of course while Ena Sharples had her hairnet!
Gail Platt had long locks for 27 years on-screen before getting a chop to coincide with her new relationship with Tricky Dicky. Mum Audrey has had various dos over the years – she is a hairdresser after all!
Few women on the street have grown old gracefully with exceptions including Ena Sharples, Minnie Caldwell, Blanche Hunt, Maud Grimes and Sylvia Goodwin who’ve adapted the silver look. Phyllis Pearce opted for a blue rinse. Vera Duckworth’s hair turned purple after an error by Candice Stowe in 2003!
Of the men of course you’ve got the great quiff of Ken Barlow that’s been a feature on the show since Episode 1. Alf Roberts had a back-combed hairstyle for 30 years as did Stan Ogden while Brian Tilsley, Kevin Webster and Curly Watts all adopted a mullet in the 1980s. And there’s some men we’ve begged for them have a haircut over the years – there’s David Platt, Jamie Baldwin, Adam Barlow and Ryan Connor (they all did eventually!)
There have been many men with a receding hairline and some have been in storylines involving getting a toupee like Fred Gee, Reg Holdsworth and Norris Cole.
There have been many crimpers on the street over the years: Valerie Barlow, Audrey Roberts, Denise Osbourne, Fiona Middleton, Maxine Peacock, Tom Ferguson, Maria Sutherland, Candice Stowe, Sarah Platt, David Platt, Claudia Colby and Natasha Blakeman. But they’re not very good because characters go for a haircut and come out with the same amount of hair!!
Have you got a favourite character hairdo? Who’s got the most iconic hair? My favourite has to be redhead Rita, but I guess you know that already! She’s had so many dos over the years, it’s incredible!

What to do with Ms Webster?
(This post was originally posted by Craig Laurenson on the Coronation Street Blog in July 2013.)
I’ve got to thinking over the past couple of weeks what new producer Stuart Blackburn may have in store for the delectable Sally Webster.
Sally has had an awfully quiet year. Popping up to offer comfort and respite to old friend Gail Mac; the occasional sly remark or brown nosing in the factory; a rather amusing drunken evening in the Rovers; and that’s really about it.
Kevin’s off the scene in Germany for the foreseeable future, Rosie’s down in that there London pursuing a questionable TV career, and Sophie’s all grown up with new girlfriend Jenna and a cushy corner shop job – so perhaps it’s time to introduce a new man into Sally’s life. We’ve seen hints of this already with the delightful little tale of Sally’s internet dating woes, with a helping hand from Sophie and Jenna. I, for one, loved seeing Sally’s lighter side and the glint in her eye again.
Just last week, we saw hints of a possible dalliance between Sally and Public Enemy Number One, Tim Metcalfe. It will most likely fritter away into nothing, but all the same it’s nice to see Sally having some male contact for a change.
I’d like to put it out there that since we have a new, single male hotfooting his way to Weatherfield in the near future, perhaps Sally could bag herself a toyboy in the form of army bad lad, Kal? A fun new direction for Ms Webster is what’s needed, and I personally think Kal could be the one to put the spark back into our Sal! What do you think?

Does demon David do it for you?
(This post was originally posted by Graeme N on the Coronation Street Blog in July 2013.)
David Platt's revenge on his family has dominated Coronation Street for the past couple of weeks. Fair enough, it makes a change from the Price family and their dramas, but haven't we seen it all before?
I mean, how many times has David gone on the rampage? And how many more times can the storyliners repeat this cycle before David either meets an untimely end or is forced to seek some form of help?
We've seen him smash up the street, during which he practically assaulted Ken Barlow. He's pushed Gail down the stairs. He's been responsible for Bethany taking ecstasy. He stood on the rooftops and pretended to take a gun to Gail, Audrey and Sarah. He tried to drive his car into the canal to disrupt his sister's wedding. And on it goes.
I know this path of destruction dates back to Richard Hillman's reign of terror. Being tied up in the back of people carrier and nearly drowned by a serial killer step-father is bound to leave its mark on any youngster. All the more reason for Coronation Street to show David receiving help and support to deal with all that.
Then there was the delightful festive discovery of granny Ivy's diary revealing all of Gail's long forgotten plans to abort David during troubles with his father, Martin (remember him?) As a side note, Martin is only meant to be in Liverpool - why did Gail never send David off to be with him?
Anyway, I digress. Although I find aspects of David's regular self destruction good telly, how many more times can they do this? The discovery of Kylie and Nick's betrayal was very well done - Jack P Shepherd was superb, however what has happened since has been far more predictable. I love David and Kylie together, Paula Lane is consistently wonderful. I really hope they don't split them up as I was starting to see a positive change in David's character.
I hope this is the last time David goes off the rails. Let's see the baby being David's after all and David and Kylie sticking it out.
So tell me, are you enjoying seeing David cause havoc yet again?

Sunday Comments July 21
Roy is not best pleased that Hayley interfered. She might be doing it for the right reasons but Roy won't be helped, not that way. After all these years, he still doesn't realize that she worries and is there to support him, even if talking about his feelings doesn't come easy for him. He finally let it out, all his frustrations and the futility of having all those unanswered questions. It wasn't enough. Hayley's pushing and pushing him to get professional help. The latest sleepwalking incident could have turned out tragically. The straw that broke the camel's back. Looks like it took Fiz, someone a bit more removed from the situation to get Roy to finally go for help. That was the smallest and most cramped waiting room ever, all of the patients sitting practically cheek by jowl. It certainly didn't help Roy's state of discomfort that Beth was there winding him up and he fled the coop. Hayley bullied him back again for his own good.
Fay is lonely and feeling left out of the family. Pride goeth before a very lonely and hungry fall. How on earth can Faye possible get so dirty? She's not rolling in the mud like a four year old. And when she tried a beer to get something to drink? Has she never learned that water comes out of taps? She's a stupid prideful child and now that Mary's a nanny, is she now the go-to girl for troubled children? Why doesn't Faye go for school dinners? Does that cost extra? Mary has spilled the beans so it'll all come out now.
Owen handled Faye quite well, didn't he? He wouldn't be mad at her and Anna won't either but she sure lit into Tim and it wasn't his fault. Anna didn't believe Faye when she said Tim didn't know she was home alone. Well, ok, he should have gone to Anna himself rather than trusting Faye to do it. And Anna, since she's already attacked Tina in public, now she's obviously got a taste for it and she tore a strip off Tim on the doorstep too. Tim at least, admits he isn't very good at parenting and Faye realizes her dream of a perfect relationship with her dad isn't going to happen so she decided on her own to come home. I think he was secretly relieved. Anna can't leave well enough alone and wants Tim to leave town. Anna's making up for lost time, isn't she? Hovering over Faye. Meanwhile, Tim is feeling pushed around by Owen and seems to have decided to go. Anna is so mean to Tim, though, far more than is necessary.
Norris managed to grovel and apologize but he still made it all about him, didn't he? Norris is in major suck up mode now and now Emily has decide that she's going to give the house to Norris now before she dies. That settles it. She's just as capable of revenge as David and though this isn't as destructive as David's. I think she's up to something. Rita may even be in on it with her. Nobody believes Emily is giving Norris the house. Rita and Dennis are concerned Emily is doing the right thing but again, I'm positive Emily has something up her sleeve, especially talking about all the expenses that go along with owning a house.
Leanne is justified in being angry with Nick for being suspicious and jealous. She does have a history with Peter but she's not given Nick any reason to mistrust her now. David is absolutely delighted that his plan is working. Of all the people David reached out to, Tina? Well he's got to talk to someone. He won't confront Kylie because he'd have to admit it and break up with her and he thinks he could love the baby even if it isn't his or he doesn't know. He'd rather not know. I think under the circumstances it would be difficult to keep all that bottled up and stress isn't good for him. He told Tina he's going to get his revenge. She's going to figure it out, mark my words.
David has now taken his revenge to a 12 year old's level by keying Peter's car. David's work was well done, he thought. Keying the car caused lots of ructions between Peter, Leanne and Nick but it didn't dent Leanne and Nick and David's mood plummeted when that little trick didn't have the intended result. He launched a barrage of peanuts at Gail, taking it out on her and yet still nobody has guessed that he's figured out the secret. It was a creepy scene, though, wasn't it? Later, I really thought he was going to tell Kylie he knew when he was spewing his jealousy about Nick to her. Student night at the Bistro. Leanne was all gung ho and Nick didn't really share that enthusiasm. Having a reporter there gave David a new idea for mischief. Call the police and pretend there's drugs at the Bistro.
Kylie and Gail seem to be at a truce these days. Maybe a shared secret has given them insight to each other. David did apologize but Gail stood up to him. I really can't understand how David is going off the edge with so many signs and nobody spots the problem. Every time he gets annoyed, he goes off on another one. There's a big secret and why wouldn't you guess that he's found out? Now I wonder why they're putting David and Tina in each other's paths?
Tina's bottling it all up again and she's snapping at everyone. That's not good. Rita doesn't need to pay for a holiday, Tina should still have the balance of the baby cash, shouldn't she? There may be a spark between Sally and Tim. Come to think of it, they may be an ok couple. I thought Eileen was going to get some councilling long before now? And I thought she realized how much she needed it but she nearly backed out. Carla is still in the dumps about Rob but the knicker business is booming, even with out hotshot Rob.
Chesney is still using Sinead to get back at Katy and she would be better off running for the hills rather than getting involved in the middle of that. Sinead sure put Katy in her place, though. Ryan is pulling away from all that domesticity. Why would he want to go to the doctor's for a checkup for the little'un? Well he doesn't want to, does he, but he's too chicken to break up with Katy. Sinead is afraid Chesney still has feelings for Katy. He does. Or at least he's using her for revenge. He might act all nonchalant at the news that Ryan is cheating on Katy but you know he's bothered and he certainly showed it. Kirk thought it was important that Chesney know about Ryan. Why doesn't anyone think it's important for Katy to know? Chesney wasn't even going to tell her until pushed.

Corrie A-Z: G is for Gossips
(This post was originally posted by Llifon on the Coronation Street Blog in June 2013.)
Whether we admit it or not, we all like to hear a bit of gossip. I personally admit that I like to hear gossip and my mum and my gran call me ‘Keyhole Kate’! And without a doubt Corrie has had its fair share of gossips over the years. And you can’t beat Coronation Street for fresh, daily gossip. It has been said that gossips are the most dangerous and destructive characters in a show – be it hearing some juicy gossip or broadcasting it to all sun and sundry. This can result in the destruction of a whole family or community. Gossips usually show impartiality and don’t side with any party. They prefer to remain neutral so they can receive gossip and news from both sides.
Can you think of other gossips? Who has been your favourite gossip?

Since its debut in 1960, Corrie has included gossips in its format. The first gossips were the Greek chorus in the snug: Ena, Martha and Minnie. Martha was the one who found the gossip and dished it out to her fellow cronies to discuss over their milk stouts. Elsie Tanner’s dalliances were the main topic of conversation and the goings-on at No. 11 provided much entertainment for the OAPs.
When Martha died in 1964, Ena and Minnie were only seen to pass comment on the commotions of the street and not gossip as such. The role of prattler was passed on to Hilda Ogden who would become the chief gossip of the cobbles for the next 23 years. She indulged in the various affairs of next-door neighbour Elsie Tanner and her close friendship with Len Fairclough and her job as the Rovers cleaner was perfect for dishing out gossip and hearing some much to landlady Annie Walker’s annoyance. A typical gossip, Hilda disliked the neighbours gossiping the ins and outs of her and hubby Stan’s troubles. By the late 1980s, Hilda realised that the neighbours weren’t interested in her jangling and gossip and came to the conclusion that her time on Coronation Street was coming to an end. When an offer to go housekeeping for Dr Lowther in Derbyshire came up, Hilda accepted and left the street in 1987. Although a gossip, she failed to find out that the residents had planned a farewell party for her!
Filling Hilda’s shoes as the street’s gossip was a heavy task. Various characters took over the mantle like Vera Duckworth, Ivy Tilsley, Ida Clough and Percy Sugden. While Vera and Ivy enjoyed prattling about the neighbours, especially about Mike Baldwin, Percy was seen as a busybody, poking his nose in other people’s business – more often than not his landlady Emily Bishop. Audrey Roberts also indulged in gossip, despite husband Alf’s chagrin. But, a typical gossip, Audrey was always on the warpath if anyone gossiped about her breed!
In recent years, the gossips have included Norris Cole, Blanche Hunt and Sylvia Goodwin. While Norris’ nosiness is reminiscent of Percy Sugden, he’s also a gossip and is often seen sweeping the pavement outside the Kabin on the prowl for the latest news. As a newsagent, he sells the news and picks it up first hand! Norris’ ally for many years was outspoken battleaxe Blanche Hunt and they were often seen passing comment on the various shenanigans either in the Kabin or in the Rovers. Barmaid Betty Williams also joined in on occasions. Since Blanche’s death, Norris’ partner in crime has been Mary Taylor.

ITV's Summer of Soaps
Here's a great little promo video that ITV has released with soap stars from Coronation Street and Emmerdale delivering lines from Shakespeare's 18th Sonnet. Here's the video and the full poem below. Have a look, there are no spoilers.
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Sneak previews for Canadian Corrie July 22 - 26
Without further ado, here's a brief run down of next week's Coronation Street on Canadian Screens:
David is pleased with his work. With every knockback, he finds another trick to play. Carla worries about Peter's business. Katy's eyes are opened. Chesney makes a decision. Paul has a very bad day and it might cause the end of a friendship. Emily follows through with her promise.

Who will still be clattering across the cobbles in 2023?
(This post was originally posted by Clinkers (David) on the Coronation Street Blog in July 2013.)
What will the future bring for the good folk of Weatherfield? Well, we don't know. Far be it from this humble blogger to even begin to guess the twists and turns that lay ahead for the characters we love (and loathe).
Possibly the more interesting question to ponder is exactly how many of the current cast have the power or appeal to last another decade? Are there enough stories to be told about some of them or are we already reaching the end of the line?
Given increased longevity in society and barring illness, there's no reason why the likes of Rita, Emily and Dennis should not be still propping up the Rovers bar come 2023. There also has to be a strong possibility of glittering futures for the likes of Eileen, Gail, Fiz and Tyrone, Steve and Mich . . .err, maybe just Steve. Anna Windass has the makings of a good long-term character but the constant swapping between 'Soppy Anna' and 'Harridan Anna' is a little jarring and does her no favours. Likewise Leanne. Another decade of her contorting her face and stamping around small sets does not make for great drama. For me, Jane Danson shines as one of the programme's better actresses so it's odd that the producers keep her in this perpetual Peter/Nick loop.
I'm hoping that both Sally and Deirdre grow old disgracefully. After Dreary's woeful (but hilarious) handling of Roy's sleepwalking last week, I think it's safe to say that Mrs Barlow has a wonderful future ahead of her as a slightly barmy late middle aged woman. She is going to be fun to watch, especially if she morphs into her own mother.
Tracy and St Ella aside (I think we read too much about them on here), there are arguably a whole host of characters with a short shelf life. Think about it. Does anyone burst into raptures at the idea of Dev, Maria, any of the Armstrongs including FayE, Ryan, continuing in ever decreasing circles for another decade?
Which current residents do you think will still have the power to entertain us in 2023?

Where's all the male Corrie totty gone? (slight spoiler)
(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog June 2013, reposted to this blog with permission.)
(Note this contains a spoiler that a character is leaving but since it's such a minor character, I didn't thing it was like spoiling a major plotline)
News that Doctor Carter - or to give him his full tabloid name, Hunky Doctor Carter - is leaving Coronation Street doesn't come as too much of a surprise today for Coronation Street fans.
But it does leave us lady viewers of a certain age in need of some much needed older man totty to look at on Coronation Street.
Where's the wonderfully strong, silent, cuddly types like Dennis Stringer gone?
All we've got on the street at the minute are the likes of Peter Barlow to gawp over but a) he's not very tall and b) he's an alcoholic. And there's Faye's dad Tim, who's quite dishy in his own way, but a) he's far too self-absorbed and b) he could turn out to be a fake and c) he's not very tall and d) he's a bit young.
Come on, Corrie. You're doing your lady viewers of a certain age no favours by not giving us a male character to believe in. We want someone who's easy on the eye, someone we wouldn't mind getting into a snug with in the Rovers Return. Someone we want to share a half of stout and a packet of cheese and onion with before heading out for a chippy tea together and a lifetime of cobbled contentent and a cuddle.

Corrie fans of the week - Gemma & Michael from Conversation Street
(On The Coronation Street Blog, a semi-regular feature is a Fan of the Week. Recently, they featured the people behind the great podcast, Conversation Street which we also feature here on the Bluenose Blog so we're bringing Gemma and Michael to you, too!
(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog July 2013, reposted to this blog with permission.)
It's time to meet two special Corrie fans of the week.
Would you like to be our Corrie fan of the week?
Click here to find out more.
Who are you and where are you from?
We're Gemma and Michael, husband and wife from Southampton. We run the Corrie podcast, Conversation Street, which will be celebrating its 50th episode later this week!
How long have you been watching Corrie?
Michael: I've been watching since around 1994. I remember it always being on in the evenings, as my mum was a fan, and eventually the lure was too strong and I started watching it myself! I don't think I started watching it regularly until the following year, though. I think I may remember Deirdre marrying Samir in 1994, but I have vivid memories of him dying in 1995, and how the producers changed his exit at the last moment so not to put people off kidney transplants! I also watched many of the 80s episodes when they were broadcast on Granada Plus in the late 90s.
Gemma: I started watching Corrie after I met Michael at university, and there really wasn't much choice as he had a TV and I didn't! We lived in a house together in our second year and so everyone watched Corrie together - when he lived in France for a year I stopped watching it, but after he finished his degree and we moved in together, I think I've probably never missed an episode!
Who are your favourite female and male characters - and the reasons why?
Michael: When it comes to male characters, Fred Elliot and Jack Duckworth were always good for a laugh, and at the moment I'm really enjoying watching what David and Roy are getting up to. Of course, favourite female characters are always easy to reel off for Corrie. Hilda Ogden and Vera Duckworth were some of my faves from the old guard - both of which suffered from a string of knockbacks, but always managed to overcome them with a joke and a smile. Out of the current crop of characters, Sylvia's always brilliant to watch. Oh, I always used to have a bit of a thing for Racquel too - sorry Gemma!
Gemma: What?! Weird time to start the confessions! I love Becky, she'll always be my favourite, and I really hope she'll come back one day, although her ending was great and I like to imagine the character sunning herself in a tropical paradise for the rest of her days. Becky for me is the ultimate Corrie woman - bolshy, brassy and mouthy as heck, with a heart of gold. As for the male characters, I think David has actually become mine. I don't particularly like him all the time, but when he switches into 'evil David' mode, he's amazing to watch. He's like a machiavellian genius.
What's been some of your favourite Corrie storylines over the years?
Michael: I remember being totally gripped by the whole Jon Lindsay saga, and as most of the nation would agree, the Richard Hillman storyline was unmissable. The whole John Stape storyline was wonderfully silly, and I loved the domestic abuse stuff last year - it's very deserving of all the awards it's been getting.
Gemma: I think the stuff with Richard Hillman gripped me pretty well, "You should have stayed at the party, Maxine!" has become a pretty funny catchphrase around here. And of course, I can't ever look at black leather gloves the same any more now. I liked David's breakdown when he pushed Gail down the stairs, that was pretty intense to watch too! I have a fond memory of Becky's first wedding to Steve, which was hilarious - and I always like a good wedding on Corrie, if only to see the dresses!
And what would your fantasy Corrie storyline be?
We'd both agree that any storyline involving the grisly demise of Ryan and Katy would be right up our street at the moment. In fact, we'd put Chesney (or Ches Misérables, as we call him on the podcast) in it as well, apart from the fact that he's actually the star of the other storyline idea we've been tossing around, which would see him buying the old butcher's shop and starting up his own business. Making him into a little Alan Sugar would be very interesting to watch. Another thing we'd love to see is Sylvia coming into some money and buying the Rovers. Having her behind the bar would hark back to Annie Walker's glory days, but we think Sylvia has developed into enough of her own character to do something different with the role. Of course, it would be very interesting to see teetotaler Roy's reaction to his mother's new position, too.
Have you any snippets or news about meeting any of the Corrie cast, or trips to the set, etc., that you'd like to share?
We've met a couple of cast members over the years, but never really in a Corrie capacity. Michael met Craig Charles a few times at Red Dwarf book signings back in the 90s, and he also saw (but never spoke to) Julie Goodyear on holiday in the south of France back when he was younger. He also met Geoffrey Hughes (Eddie Yeats) back when he was in primary school, as Keeping Up Appearances (Hughes' other big show) was filmed in his village. Back then, though, Michael had no idea that he used to be in Corrie!
More recently. we both visited the toy shop run by Peter Baldwin (Derek Wilton) in Covent Garden, although, as we thought he'd probably put his Corrie days far behind him, we just bought a postcard and left! Also, Gemma met Adam Rickitt outside a theatre after a performance in a musical - although he was acting like a bit of pretentious wally at the time. Oh yes, and randomly, Rula Lenska (Claudia Colby), once accidentally landed a hot air balloon on the playing field near Gemma's house during the Southampton Balloon Festival! Her parents had to help them take off again, and Rula was in the basket shouting, "Push, darlings, push!"
