Steve McDonald's latest loose cannon

 Have you noticed that for the most part, Steve is attracted to women that are trashy, gobby and most definitely  not sweet tempered types? His first wife, Vicky, wasn't like that. She was far too good for him but she had money and he was young and ambitious. Most of his girlfriends have been and his second (and third) wife Karen was the epitome of all those qualities as is his current wife, Becky.

Even Michelle was a mouthy madam, a little on the raunchy side (being all rock and roll free spirited, at least at first. Now she's just a slapper!) Ronnie was the wife/estranged wife of a ganster and that gave the relationship an edge of danger. Those all seem to be the sorts of women that really inspire Steve's passion and I think i know why.

Let's face it, Liz isn't exactly white gloves and garden parties, is she? Steve has always been a bit of a mother's boy though isn't tied to her apron strings either. His mother was and is flashy and a bit on the cheap side. She's quick tempered and fierce, too. I'm pretty sure Steve's gobby women are picked because of their similarities to his mother. Becky is no exception though is a bit on the extreme side, even more so than Karen was, which probably means that eventually, this relationship is going to burn out too.

Here in Canada, we've just started the adoption storyline and Becky has already messed up her initial meeting with the social worker. We've seen how quickly she can kick off, especially when she gets a knock back. From various stories she's told, it certainly seems like she's been dragged up, or, more likely, brought herself up. She's been made to feel she's worth nothing all her young life and hasn't got a lot of self esteem now. It doesn't take a lot for her to go off the rails and trust me, without spoiling things, it doesn't really change. Steve is going to end up with his heart broken yet again, eventually.

It will too bad, too, when the inevitable happens,  because I like Steve and Becky together. I like that she's so flawed, a flinty, streetsmart outside shell, a brick wall even,  with a soft centre. I like that Roy and Hayley's support made her bloom, a bit at least, but that she hasn't changed completely. I don't want the Personality Transplant Fairy to change her into another Claire or harden her like Tracy. What I really want is for Becky and Steve to go the distance but loose cannons invariably back fire at some point and destroy those that they love the best. It happened to Karen. I'm guessing it will happen to Becky. Time will tell.
