There’s more to this story than the headline suggests. Kind of.
As if butter wouldn't melt |
My cable television provider, who shall remain nameless (it rhymes
with Virgin Media) have got into the habit recently of refusing to let me watch
my favourite soap on the same day it was broadcast. Last night was such an
occasion. To add insult to injury my laptop is broken. Milk and electricity do
not mix.
So I got home from work late on Wednesday, settled down on
the sofa with a snack, ready to enjoy an hour of classic Corrie on super
Wednesday – the day they added an extra sixth episode and it was announced that
ITV3 will start showing episodes of Corrie from the 1980s.
I waited, and I
waited. Nowt. No Corrie catch up for me. In my desperation I resorted to watching on my trusty, but tiny
iPhone. All started well as I peered through bent spectacles, so scratched they
are more frosted than a bathroom window. Corrie was just getting juicy as Maria
and Eva flailed around in the hotel fountain, a fight so ridiculous Hugh Grant
and Colin Firth would have been proud. And then my phone slid off the pillow I
was using to hold it up and disappeared down the side of the arm rest. It was
stuck. I could hear Eva’s cries, Tyrone’s joking, Kirk’s disappointment. But
they were so far away. This was a disaster.
The original fountain fight (Bridget Jones) |
Having rescued my phone / mini TV I eventually got through
both episodes, gravity yanking my phone into the crevice of my sofa several
more times before Johnny and Jenny crossed the factory threshold to blue skies
and confusion. I’d made it. Rita was still alive, I was still alive. Wednesdays
would never be the same again. But as entertaining as the episodes were, I didn’t
feel right. I didn’t feel like I’d got the full sense of how good the night’s
Corrie was. I’d have to watch it again. So I did. But backwards.
I like to play around a bit with video editing, and I’ve made
several Corrie related films in the past. I remembered that somebody had
created a backwards episode of Coronation Street years ago, in an episode that
saw Bet Lynch have a catfight in the street with Hilda Ogden. So as I had the
general gist of what had happened in Wednesday night’s Corrie, I decided to run
some clips through some editing software, with Monday’s buildup included. And
this is what happened:
Conclusion? A) it sounds a bit Dutch B) the fountain cat fight is BRUTAL backwards C) Rita's singing is still beautiful and D) I have way too much time on my hands…
