Wow, great episodes this week!!!! I was on the edge of my seat during the fire episodes!
Karl reckons a fire will get blamed on Jason and he'll get Stella in the end. Yes, I really do think he's lost his mind. He didn't mean for Sunita to get thrown down the stairs and didn't mean for the fire to get out of hand, but what did he expect it to do? He wasn't about to put it out. I wonder why there wasn't a smoke detector in the cellar. By the time the smoke alarm did go off, it was clear it was in the main bar and even then it didn't set them off upstairs. I thought they'd all go off together if one did. Emily and Norris discovered the fire and ran to call the fire brigade. Emily did rouse Tracy from her bed and she did get Eccles, thankfully. Things look pretty dire by the end of the episode. The downstairs is an inferno and Karl, trying to be a hero, is trapped upstairs with Stella and he's got them both down on the ground trying to get under the smoke and telling her that at least they'll die together. Creeped me out, that did.
And would Aadi and Asha really have placidly sat in the house colouring with a big fire and firemen outside? I think not. Paul's really not dealing with Toni's death very well. Probably on top of losing Lesley, now losing a good friend...
Jason finally managed to get a ladder, just as they did in 1986. Paul took it on himself to go up the ladder, everyone screaming at him not to but he is one of the few people that at least has a chance at getting them out and then there's Stella, another blonde out the window of the burning pub. Same window too. No remarks about putting her lippy on this time around though. Toni is up the ladder next, to get Karl and Eileen screamed "don't do this to me!!!" To you??? it's his frickin job and it's not about you, dear. But Oh gosh, the ceiling came in on Toni but Karl's out.
Oh no, there's an explosion and Toni's still in there!!! What could blow up in a pub Norris says. What? Gas probably. Karl and Stella are out and everyone runs away but Toni is still trapped in there. At least the fire brigade have finally arrived along with the ambulances, Stella's in a bad way. She inhaled an awful lot of smoke. Your daughter's very poorly they told Gloria. That's putting it mildly.
And Gloria had a lovely scene talking to Stella. That's the kind of thing we wanted from Sue Johnston all this time. Gloria's usually mean and hard faced but this is the side of her you would expect to see. Her acting blew Dev's out of the water, out of the whole ocean come to that. Come to think of it, even Sunita's acting showed him up and she was just laying there.
Jason is in shock, really. And everyone seems more serious about getting an update on the people still clinging to life. No Nosy Norris, this time he really was asking out of concern...I think. But he's not above a bit of gossip just the same, asking everyone and anyone. The community seems to be coming together to support everyone else. Marcus and Maria have the Alahan twins now. Ken is going to start a fund raiser. Apparently the unseen Kevin has suggested that he move into Sally's and let the Prices have Number 13. Has he actually asked Sally? Everyone wants to help but there's not a lot most can do.
It's annoying that Dev keeps holding Sunita's bandaged and burned hand. Stella has pulled through, no surprise but her first word was Karl. Gloria has even more reason to feel kindly towards Karl. I wonder if his tears were real. They seemed to be. He felt bad about Sunita and the potentially motherless kids and it broke him to hear about Toni. All guilt, no doubt. It's gone from arson to murder. He's still trying to get into Stella's good books, telling her he would run into a burning building all over again. Karl might feel guilty but not so guilty that he let slip that Jason might have started the fire, though.
Jason's not happy to see Karl sniffing around and he doesn't trust him one bit. Nor should he, but it makes him look bad in Stella's eyes, especially accusing Karl of burning down the Rovers to get back at them. Except, seeing as the fireman broke all confidentiality laws and told Paul in front of other witnesses that the fire started in the cellar in the electrics unit, and those witnesses were Gloria and Eva, everyone now thinks Jason was at fault. He's positive he didn't make a mistake and everyone else is ignoring him, more interested in talking about donated clothes and Number 13.
Did you notice in the Bistro when Karl returned that Paul seemed to sense something off? I reckon he smelled smoke on Karl but didn't quite put his finger on what he subconsciously detected. Rita's having flashbacks to the tram crash and being trapped. She feels guilty but it's all understandable and Norris' radar is up again. Why was Sunita in there? Just as i was wondering where Dennis is, Norris mentioned that he's away until tomorrow. Rita actually thanked Norris for fussing over her this time. Because this time she needed it. The vigil is being held at the Bistro. Rob wasn't keen on having Tracy and the dog stay with him, because Tracy has a cold. So she's not the love of his life, i see. Ken and Deirdre are bunking in with Peter and Carla so Carla's drinking again.
Gail still can't resist sniping amidst all the tragedy and makes it all about her. I'm not sure what this is doing in the middle of it all but Kylie has persuaded Gail to come back home so David doesn't keep asking difficult questions, and Kylie thinks it's all going to be ok. Paul's taking out his grief and anger out on Eileen already, nothing she says sits well with him at all. He's in shock and has lost a good friend. Probably something that they all dread when they go out to fight a fire.
And now it seems the fire's all but out and the accusations will being. Who started the fire? Why was Sunita there? Jason fixed the electrics, was that to blame? Paul is heading back to work and isn't in any shape to do it. He's overwhelmed with guilt. He knows he shouldn't have let her go inside, hugely against the rules and he thinks everyone at work blames him too. Eileen is in bits and feeling guilty that she's just glad it wasn't Paul. I like that Steve and Eileen's friendship is back and forefront. Paul blames Jason, too, but Eileen defended her chick. Dev laid into Jason as well. I hope they all apologize to Jason profusely when the truth comes out.
Jason insists he's a fully qualified electrican but I've never seen him take a course or pass an exam. Well, later on the police show that they've done something right and say that they know it was started by paper and alcohol and it's now a murder investigation. Jason's vastly relieved. Karl needs clean shorts. Gloria mentions to the police that Sunita had a grudge but Stella doesn't think that Sunita could have gone that far. Neither does Dev when the police put it to him. He's outraged, in fact. Then again, if half the neighbourhood can believe that Tyrone can belt Kirsty and look suspiciously at Jason, why wouldn't they all believe Sunita could burn someone alive? If we didn't know who really did start the fire, it would be very hard to watch but since we do know, it's fascinating watching Karl's reactions. John Michie is a great actor!
Kirsty seems to have saddled Julie with the baby yet again and it's not gone well from the looks of things. She thinks Kirsty is away somewhere with her mother and staying overnight but she really wanted time alone. Maybe she didn't trust herself alone with the baby. I bet that was it. Tina spotted Kirsty watching the firefighting from the window and bitched to Tommy about it but what was Kirsty going to do? Julie still seems to be Kirsty's defendor in spite of Tina's information that Kirsty wasn't at her mother's after all on the night of the fire.
How can Julie explain that Tina actually saw Tyrone's bruises? Does she know? Julie didn't ask Kirsty but Tina did and Kirsty was cool until Ruby started crying. It's clear she's not coping. That baby is picking up on it and is even more fractious. Kirsty thinks Ruby doesn't even like her anymore. You can tell she's getting more unreasonable from the stress. Obviously not thinking. Asking Eileen to have the baby after everything that happened? Julie and Eileen ended up comparing notes and Julie decided to check on Kirsty who proceeded to lose her temper with Julie. Case in point. It gives Julie pause for thought.
And finally, Tyrone's trial starts at the end of the week. Kirsty is barely holding herself together in front of her merry band of supporters. Julie is minding Ruby again but though Kirsty's apologized, Julie isn't so sure.
At the trial, Eileen's testimony is torn apart. She didn't actually see through the walls and couldn't say for sure that it wasn't Kirsty that was smashing things and hitting Tyrone instead of the other way around. Deirdre also didn't actually see Tyrone hit Kirsty though there was a vague threat and she found Kirsty on the ground. The barrister did call Kirsty on that, nobody actually witnessed anything, so is she lying? He did a fairly credible job but Kirsty stuck to her guns and reckons she has the jury fooled. We shall see. Kirsty's mother arrives and it throws Kirsty but she holds to her story. Afterwards, in public, Kirsty and her mother argue and it's mentioned that Tyrone is innocent, which Kirsty doesn't deny but nobody seems to hear it.
Sylvia's struggling with a painful wrist but her tongue is as sharp as ever. Oh there's Hayley. We've not seen her for awhile. Hayley's taken Peter's mention of the One O'Clock Club for something for Sylvia. Sylvia isn't ready for the place where old folk go to die, all those old women with blue rinses. Well. That went over well. She's determined not to settle into old age lightly. She doesn't want to be sent away and doesn't want to be looked after. The idea of beating the oldies at Whist for money (gambling alert!) did help change her mind. But in the cold light of day, Sylvia is not so sure she's going to enjoy the One O'Clock club after all.
Fiz is on the defence for Chesney's sake and Katy is crawling back. I didn't realize that Katy took Joseph with her because when she packed and left, she was on her own. She offered to bring the baby round to see his daddy but they really didn't talk much. She's still not sure what she wants now. Chesney spied Katy talking to Ryan. That had to hurt. Chesney is surly and snappy after seeing Katy and Ryan talking the night before.
Tina seems to be barraged with good meaning texts. Katy Cavanagh is pregnant and boy, she's really getting big! It's getting more and more difficult to hide the bump under capes and big coats and things. I chuckled at Stella, Gloria and Eva making fun of donated clothing from Mary and Gail.
