NTAs: Coronation Street red carpet pics

Last night at the National Television Awards, Coronation Street's Lucy Fallon who plays Bethany Platt, won the Serial Drama Performance Award. Well done to her! She even beat the Queen of the Street, Barbara Knox who was also nominated in this category.  Emmerdale won Best Serial Drama (aka Soap).

The Joni Awards - celebrating the worst of Coronation Street 2017

Our friends at the Coronation Street podcast, Conversation Street, have held their annual awards and the results are here.

And in addition to their usual awards, they also had a brand new awards segment in Episode 289 of the podcast: The Joni Awards!

Named after the Coronation Street character played by Sarah Harding, who is unforgettable for all the wrong reasons, the Jonis are a cheeky look at the less than stellar aspects of our favourite soap.

Unlike the usual awards which are open to the public vote, the categories in the Jonis were nominated and awarded by Michael and Gemma at Conversation Street. 

The lucky winners this year are as follows:

Worst new couple: Mary and Norris

Worst new character: Jude

Worst story: Brian's superstitions

Mardy Mare:  Anna Windass

Dirty Dog: Aidan Connor

Suspension of Disbelief:  Phelan's whisperings to Seb in his coma

Most Underused Character: Audrey

Most Boring Character: Alya

Build Up To Nothing: Rita's brain tumour

Conversation Street year end awards

This is the sixth year that Michael and Gemma at Conversation Street, an excellent Corrie podcast, have put together a year end awards show. These are awards with a difference. Yes, there are awards for best actor and actress but there are also awards for the best redhead, the best fight, the worst storyline, and more, all with creative award titles.

They run a poll in December to get listener votes on the nominations they establish from the year on Coronation Street and give the listener vote 2/3 of the weight in the final decision with their own opinions counting for the rest of it.

At the end of the podcast, they also do predictions for the coming year, both from listener feedback and from their own speculation.

Conversation Street is a fab podcast and they don't do spoilers unless it's major breaking news and then it's isolated at the very end of the podcast episode so you can avoid it if you don't want to know.

The end of 2017 is nearly here, which means the return of the Conversation Street Awards!

The past twelve months have seen their fair share of heroes and villains on the cobbles, but which characters and storylines are most deserving of praise?   Vote for your favourites in the awards which are run by our friends over at Conversation Street, the Coronation Street podcast people!

Results will be revealed in the annual awards show around New Year, but first, have a look at the nominations below and pick your winners!  The listener poll counts for two thirds of the overall vote, and Gemma and Michael will get the rest, so make sure you make your picks in the poll - vote here!  (WARNING there may be just one or two spoilers in the nominations for Canadian viewers)

Coronation Street wins PinkNews Ally Award

Coronation Street has been awarded the PinkNews Ally Awards  for ‘decades’ of LGBT representation.  The award was collected on behalf of Coronation Street at the awards do last night by actor Daniel Brocklebank who plays Billy Mayhew in Corrie.

When picking up the award, Brocklebank honoured the “wonderful” Tony Warren for his efforts.

“Thank you so much for this award. It is in honour of the wonderful late Tony Warren, who without, we wouldn’t be here today. We are sure that Tony would be proud of the LGBT stories we are still sharing in the show.”

PinkNews CEO Benjamin Cohen said: “Coronation Street, created by the late Tony Warren in 1960, who said, ‘I don’t think it could have been created by a straight man, who would have seen the innate glamour in a back street in an industrial town. Because gays had been shut in the corner for so long, we found the oddest entertainment in the oddest places’. From early portrayals of gay couples to the first trans soap character, it has been a trail blazer for LGBT+ representation.”

Daniel Brocklebank added: “I feel proud of the adoption storyline and proud to represent my community. Last year at Euston station a woman burst into tears and threw her arms around me and said, ‘Thank you, you’ve helped my son so much’.

Vote for Corrie! Inside Soap Awards 2017

Voting for the Inside Soap Awards 2017 opened this week. Votes can be cast by visiting www.insidesoap.co.uk or by completing the voting form within Inside Soap magazine.

In 2016, some 120,000 voters named Emmerdale as Best Soap, but now another year of soap drama has passed, with countless sizzling storylines, shock twists, vicious villains and rocky romances, competition for the 19 award categories has never been so tense.

Inside Soap Editor Steven Murphy said: “It’s been a dramatic year in soapland, with some stand-out plots and amazing performances, so the competition is tougher than ever. However, if anyone can make the right decision, it’s the readers of Inside Soap magazine – Britain’s original and best TV soap weekly.”

Voting closes at 5pm on Monday 2nd October. The winners will be announced on Monday 6th November at the Inside Soap Awards ceremony in central London.

The Inside Soap Awards are the only soap awards voted for entirely by soap fans.

Kym Marsh wins Best Soap Personality at TRIC Awards 2017

Kym Marsh, who plays Michelle McDonald in Coronation Street, has been awarded a gong today at the TRIC Awards.

Kym scooped the Best Soap Personality award at the bash held in that London today.  Kym was at the awards do with Corrie cast mates including Rob Mallard (Daniel Osbourne), Tina O'Brien (Sarah Platt), Faye Brookes (Kate Connor) and Daniel Brocklebank (Billy 'the vicar' Mayhew).

The award for Best Soap went to EastEnders.

TRIC (the Television and Radio Industries Club) Awards are voted for not by a panel of judges or a committee, but by the many members of the Industry.

Conversation Street Podcast 233 - The Awards

Conversation Street - The awards show

Coronation Street writer wins Culture Award

Coronation Street scriptwriter and award-winning playwrite Jonathan Harvey won the 2016 Winq Culture Award yesterday in that London.

The award was presented to Jonathan by Coronation Street's Brooke Vincent (Sophie Webster) and Dan Brocklebank (Billy the vicar Mayhew).

Coronation Street win Royal Television Society Award

Coronation Street has won a Royal Television Society Award in the Craft and Design Awards 2016.

The award went to the camera team for Coronation Street Live (September 2015).

The RTS Craft & Design Awards recognise the huge variety of skills and processes involved in programme production from editing to lighting, and costume design to digital effects.

The awards were held in the London and you can watch a montage from the awards show via the wonders of YouTube, below:

Vote in the Conversation Street yearly awards

If you're a fan of the Conversation Street podcast about Coronation Street, then you may be aware that podcasters Michael and Gemma do a year end awards episode featuring awards with a Corrie twist to the award titles.  Best Male/Female get termed "Top Lad" and "Top Lass" and the award for "Our Kid" is given out to the favourite younger actor.  There are also some that you won't find on most award shows.  The "By 'Eck" award goes to the most shocking Corrie moment. The favourite redhead gets a "Flamin' Nora" award and since there's always a good street brawl or two, there are always contenders for the "Ecky Thump" award.

Listeners can vote on all of the categories, too. Listener votes count for 2/3 of the points and Michael and Gemma will make up the balance. The nominations are here and you can vote on the awards here until the end of the year.

The awards podcast will air around New Year.

Check out the weekly spoiler free podcast. You won't be sorry you did! But keep in mind that Canadians are about 2 weeks behind at the moment. We link to the podcast from this blog when it reaches our time line if you're concerned about spoilers and the podcasters, Michael and Gemma, don't usually do spoilers in the podcast so you won't know about anything upcoming.
