Simon Gregson and wife Emma talk openly about their 12 miscarriages

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog February 2018, reposted to this blog with permission.)

Simon Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald on Coronation Street, rarely gives personal interviews. But he's on the front over of this week's OK magazine along with his wife Emma and their three sons.

Simon reveals that Emma tragically suffered 12 miscarriages, including an ectopic pregnancy that left her needing emergency surgery to save her life.

In the exclusive interview with OK! Magazine, Simon and Emma have opened up about their experiences and about how Emma feared she might not see her sons again.

Emma revealed that she had been suffering from severe stomach pains and feeling ill for a couple of weeks, but she thought it was constipation.

After the pains got so bad that Emma 'couldn’t stand up', husband Simon rushed her to hospital where it was discovered she was suffering from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy.

Emma said: "Up to that point we didn’t know I was pregnant so it came as a double blow to us. It was hard to get our heads around what was happening. I was petrified. I thought I was never going to see my sons ever again. As they were taking me down to theatre I just kept thinking, I’m going to die – this is it, I’m not going to make it. As they were prepping me for surgery I had to keep signing lots of forms. I just felt devastated and so overwhelmed. It was the most frightening time I’ve ever had."

Simon said: "They told me Emma would’ve died if it had been left for a few more hours. She was literally two hours away from death."

Emma continued: "The stigma has been removed from having miscarriages, but ectopic pregnancy isn’t discussed enough – I didn’t really know anything about it. The more you talk, the more you can help other people and spot the signs. It’s such a dangerous condition."

The pair have now resigned to the fact that they will not have any more children, with Simon saying: "I think as Emma has come so close to death, that’s it for us.

"We originally thought Emma couldn’t carry girls, but she so desperately wanted a little girl. I would love her to have one – but now, after nearly losing her, I’m going in and having the snip."

And Emma said: "Every time I found out I was pregnant,I never felt joyous. I would just fear the worst. I don’t think my mind or body could do it any more."

5 things I love about Coronation Street right now

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog January 2018, reposted to this blog with permission.)

As the year heads to a close, I'm feeling a bit confused about Coronation Street. I've written a little something to that effect here.

But it's too easy to sit here being a keyboard warrior writing all the things that I think is wrong with the show. All the things that I think are wrong with it are things you might think are right. And if we swapped lists, there'd be things on your list that I couldn't agree with, I'm sure.

What's important is that Corrie still ignites the passion within us fans. We care - a lot - when it's not going well and love it even more when it is.

Trying to brighten my day then before the year ends, here are the five things that I'm loving about Corrie right now.

1. Jenny flaming Bradley

Yes, I know she's Jenny Connor but she'll always be Jenny Bradley to me. Always fun to watch. Bring on the fireworks between her and Carla, please.

2. Gemma Winter

Gemma is a gem. She deserves to be behind the bar at the Rovers instead of drippy Toyah(*) and changed-personality Peter. (*I love Toyah, but she doesn't work with Peter and neither of them deserve to be at the Rovers).

3. Tracy and Steve

I am loving Tracy and Steve back together. It might not last, and it shouldn't, of course. Steve should be with Leanne. But until that happens (if it does), then I'm enjoying every second of these two pretending to play happy families. Tracy's behaviour now reminds me of Deirdre, who's still much missed of course.

4. Michelle Connor

Given the right storyline, Kym Marsh acts everyone else off the screen. The late miscarriage storyline this year had me in pieces and Kym's powerful performance was incredible.  But then.. what? They stuck her with Robo-Robert. Get rid of him, Corrie and give the Bistro to Michelle to run in competition with Liz back at the Rovers. Now that's a fight I'd like to see. And Liz to win, of course.

5. Liz, Sally, Rita, Gail, Audrey

Okay, I know that's five women but please Corrie, let's see more of them. Stop the focus, just briefly on Kate and Rana. Just because there's a noise on Twitter about them, doesn't mean every single one of your viewers is a #Kana fan. It also doesn't mean that every single one of your viewers is on Twitter. Please remember this and don't lose sight of what you are - a television programme - not a social media fad.

Coronation Street Blog Interview with Simon Gregson and Kate Ford

(This post was originally posted by Ruth Owen on the Coronation Street Blog in December 2017, reposted to this blog with permission.)

I had the pleasure of interviewing Simon Gregson and Kate Ford – Steve MacDonald and Tracy Barlow at Media City in early November. It was a real joy to interview them and they had us all in uproar. At times, it was hard to distinguish whether they were being themselves or were being Steve and Tracy. They have worked together for so long and are such self-confessed very good friends, that the shifting in and out of character only added to the fun of the interview.

How surprised were you both when you discovered that you were to be an item again?

Pretty shocked actually! After all that’s gone on between them and all the vitriol that they have each thrown at one another, it really was a surprise when Kate Oates called us in to see how we would react to the plan. Now it’s sinking in, we’re both really excited about the forthcoming storyline. We know each other so well both on and off the cobbles and love working together.

When does it happen?

Well we both go to Amy’s school’s carol concert and we’re both a bit naughty. Tracy smuggles in a full hip flask into the concert and both of us get a bit giggly. Afterwards we sleep together. There’s an element of lonely at Christmas perhaps which brings them together.

Are both of you ready to take all the criticism that will come your way? From Liz? From Amy?

Yes, we are. We’re both aware that romantically nothing else is doing and so we might as well get together. And we are attracted to each other. As yet, we don’t know how Liz will respond but we can take a good guess. Gobsmacked comes to mind. Remember that Tracy had an affair with Liz’s boyfriend Tony, so apart from anything else, Liz won’t forget that in a hurry.

Amy is very displeased. She discovers that her biological mum and dad have reignited the flames by seeing text messages between Steve and Tracy. Amy thinks that their being together will be a total disaster. It will be endless rows and for her, Amy believes, life will be unbearable. She has witnessed all the arguments and friction between her warring parents and imagines it will be more of the same.

And what about Tracy? How does she feel about claiming Steve as her own?

Oh, she is loving every minute of it and sees herself as getting one up on Steve’s other women; a triumph over Leanne and Michelle. Tracy has never seen eye to eye with these two women, or any of the women except Beth and Mary, so revels in claiming Steve as her own. Leanne is particularly shocked, which really pleases Tracy. Leanne is worried about Tracy’s involvement in her baby’s life.  Besides, remember when Steve’s ideal woman was revealed to him on the computer? Well, it was Tracy, wasn’t it?

Does the relationship between you both run smoothly?

Not exactly… They go to the bistro for a meal and every time Tracy looks at Steve, she finds him looking longingly at Michelle. This does not go down well with Tracy! Steve’s not quite Henry VIII but he is certainly getting there!

How does Carla’s return affect Tracy, bearing in mind that they were arch enemies?

Tracy has moved on from all the Carla aggro, so she doesn’t seem to bother her anymore. There are no plans to revive that hostility. I think possibly it won’t return because it was all a bit overdone, pantomime even.

When Weatherfield gets weird

(This post was originally posted by Clinkers (David) on the Coronation Street Blog in October 2017.)

Nothing will ever, totally diminish my love of all things Corrie. Like any fine relationship though, it has its ups and downs. I staggered through the woefully dull mid-80s storylines when the height of excitement was Alf Roberts plonking his backside on Sam Tindall's Christmas pud. I endured the tedium of late 1990s Zoe Tattersall, her 'bay-beh' and the dull cult. I even ploughed manfully through Graeme Proctor and his marriage of convenience to a woman so bland that I don't even recall her name.

This week though brought about one of those moments when I would have gladly sewn my eyelids together with fish wire. Or happily have spooned out my brain with a soup ladle in order not to remember Friday night.

It's the culmination of several weeks of cobbles-based weirdness which has left-me somewhat slack-jawed and dead-eyed. Six episodes per week may be a bonus for some but to find yourself squinting at catch-up at 5.30 a.m. drains the series of much of its joy. Plus there is the ever-changing cast. It ebbs and flows like the parting of the Red Sea. Characters enter and then exit stage left at such a pace that they may as well be on roller skates. When  they do stick around, at times they seem unrecognisable.

Mary, bless her, seems to be galloping through personality changes like a decades worth of Doctor Whos. Mad Mary became Caring Mary and has recently morphed into Kidnap Mary and Hellish Mother-in-Law Mary. It's off-putting and a tad bizarre. Of course, she's now coupled with Norris who we could at least rely on to be sour and camp. Nowadays he sits in the Rovers mumbling and looking forlorn. Maybe he's trying to work out what Vic Reeves' character is supposed to be, much like the rest of us.

Then we we were served up that oddity of a storyline where, apropos of nothing whatsoever, Liz decided to be nasty to Peter and Toyah. They gave her a job for crying out loud but being Liz there's no gratitude whatsoever, only some stagnant non-event of a story involving beer and a gay director from the brewery. Ho-hum.

There are inconsistencies all over the place. Bravo to Rita for surviving major brain surgery with her wig intact. Brace yourselves for a long goodbye which, given the current propensity for odd storylines, will end with her singing So long, farewell at her own funeral.

The whole Anna Windass farce is playing out nicely. In a decade she travelled the distance from dollop-in-a-track suit to Mother Earth to shrieking sandwich filler to smug wannabe social worker. Enough already. The woman is being trashed in a similar manner to the hapless Sunita a few years ago. Thankfully though, Anna's not heaving her baps into every scene. Well, only the ones she's slicing and buttering for Roy, a character who seems to now exist on the periphery of Street life.

Still, we should take some pleasure in the renewed chumminess of Steve and Dev. Steve's currently working his 'perennial loser' persona, aided and abetted by Comedy Dev. Yep, we're into another round of bog-eyed bellowing from all concerned. Give it a couple of weeks and the pair of them will be hurtling down the cobbles in clown suits on a comedy car. Add to this the lovely Moira. To some of us though she is and will always be Helen from The Archers. I keep expecting her to start banging on about milk yields, fermented foods or that silly old time when she tried to stab her husband to death. Instead she trundles in and out of the medical centre office like an out-of-control flymo.

Then there's the faktry  - or lack of it. Still no explanation as to how someone could nick a roof in broad daylight. Never mind eh? Instead we can revel in the machinations of the fashion industry, as played out by Alya from the comfort of her own living room. Sadly, she's about as interesting as a piece of old flannel hanging off a bush. Her moral compass is pretty much knackered as one minute she's 'with the girls' and the next, it's 'up yours ladies'. There has often been a feeling that the storyliners  don't know what to do with Alya and currently, it shows.

To Pat Phelan then and a tour de force of a performance from Connor McIntyre. He's undoubtedly Corrie's most watchable baddie and in a different league to pantomime killer Tony Gordon or the slightly camp drugs lord, Jez Quigley. Nope, Pat is up there looking down on the lot of them. As joyous as his portrayal is though (murder one minute, prayers the next), the second episode of October 27th will, for me, go down as one of the most uncomfortable and unnerving half hours of soap ever. Superb though the acting was (Oliver Farnworth - take a bow), the entire programme felt wrong. As a stand alone, late night drama it would have been perfect or maybe as some Corrie spin-off. However, as part of regular Corrie it felt wrong. The story has taken the show to a different place. It inhabits a world of wonky camera work, uneasy relationships, fear, hatred and cruelty. Had this taken place during Corrie's golden era then no doubt we would have enjoyed Annie Walker keeping Fred Gee hostage in the Rovers cellar, Maggie Clegg cleaving off Jerry Booth's hands in the Corner Shop meat slicer and a heroin-addled Bet Lynch suffocating on her own beehive.

Corrie has always been a bastion of light and shade when it comes to storytelling. While no one wants to be fed a diet of overweight grocers flattening plum puddings, neither does this particular viewer want to spend half an hour in a pit of despair. That's EastEnders' job.

Steve and Tracy back together - Yay or Nay?

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog October 2017, reposted to this blog with permission.)

There's a worrying story in the Metro this week suggesting that Tracy and Steve might get back together again.  Don't worry too much about the picture above - it's an old one, not a preview!

But Steve and Tracy together again? Please say it ain't so!  You can probably guess already that I'm going to vote a great big fat NAY on this one.  They're so wrong for each other, in every, er, conceivable way.  Yes, Steve is Amy's dad and that means there'll always be that connection between Steve and Tracy on the Street. But for the two of them to get back together again, oh, heavens, no!

But hang on a minute... could it just work? I wonder!

After Deirdre died in 2015 and Tracy's character mellowed after the passing of her mum, perhaps now actually might be the right time for her and Steve to get it back on.  Steve is lost without a woman, so lost that he still lives with his mum.  And as much as I'd love to see Steve and Leanne together and running the Rovers, perhaps a Steve fling with Tracy could be fun to watch (from behind the cushion on the sofa, of course).

All things considered, I still say Nay to any possibility of these two reconnecting romantically.

What do you say, Corrie fans?

5 Corrie couples who are great together

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog October 2017, reposted to this blog with permission.)

Yesterday I wrote a blog post about 5 Corrie couples who shouldn't be together. You can read it here.

Today, on a brighter note, it's the turn of those Coronation Street couples that are great together.

Sally and Tim. My favourite couple at the moment. Comedy, class warfare, clean windows and snobbery - what's not to like? Tim is the perfect down-to-earth foil for Sally and her high and mighty dreams. A perfect Corrie couple.

I love, love, love Sarah Platt and Gary Windass together. Mind you, I'd still much prefer Gary and Izzy to get back together but as that doesn't appear to be on the cards any time soon, not with Nicola's baby on the way, then it's going to be interesting to see how Sarah and Gary play out. Will she dump him when she finds out about Nicola? And she will find out, won't she? This is soap after all.

Steve and Leanne. The Corrie couple who never were together, not really, but they proved in that short period of time that they could be awesome as a two-some. Come on, Corrie, put these two together and get them running the Rovers with Liz behind the bar.
.

Beth and Kirk. Warm, funny, common as muck and they love each other so much as well as their family and friends. Always a delight.

Billy and Todd. Yesterday I included Billy and Todd in my list of 5 Corrie couples who shouldn't be together because I truly believe Todd has the capability to really hurt Billy and break his little heart.  But until (or if) that happens, they really are a joy to watch, especially with the addition of Summer.

Agree? Disagree? Let me know your views.

Steve McDonald's landmark Coronation Street episode

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog September 2017, reposted to this blog with permission.)

With thanks to our friends at Corriepedia for alerting us to this fascinating fact.

Last Sunday's episode (Sept. 3 in the UK, Sept. 15/18 in Canada) was Steve McDonald's 3,000th episode in Coronation Street.

And it's quite a milestone.

The only other characters to have featured in more than 3,000 episodes are Ken, Gail, Rita,  Deirdre, Emily and Sally.

Ken and Gail have also racked up over 4,000 appearances.

The first character to mark 1,000 episodes was Annie Walker in 1973 followed just a few weeks later by Elsie Tanner with 1267.

A full list of all of these milestones is halfway down this page:

Steve and Tracy Back Together - Yay or Nay?

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog August 2017, reposted to this blog with permission.)

There was a worrying moment at the end of last night's Coronation Street when Mary told Tracy to stop ignoring her jealous feelings towards Steve and Leanne. Mary pointed out that Tracy still had feelings for Steve, deep feelings stemming from their special relationship.  And she said that Tracy was still in love with Steve, too.

Now, that's as may be. And certainly we've seen a new, calmer, nicer Tracy since Deirdre died in 2015.  She's not as shouty and as bitchy as she used to be and hasn't as much as killed anyone either in a while.

I was just warming to Steve and Leanne together and had high comic hopes for them as the new Jack and Vera. But it looks, for now, as if that relationship is off.

But Steve and Tracy back together? Oh, please no. No, no, no. I don't think I need to say any more. It's a great big fat NAY from me.

What say you - Nay or Yay?
