Why Sylvia Goodwin is Corrie gold

Oh how I love Stephanie Cole in Coronation Street. Sylvia Goodwin is just lighting up the screen at the moment and in my opinion, definitely adds something extra to the Cropper family.

Initially I wasn't sure of her character. Her first stint was bogged down by the fairly terrible storyline involving her romance with The Man From Uncle, Milton Fanshawe. However since Sylvia has returned to Weatherfield, her character has just grown in stature. Sylvia Goodwin now has light and shade. Yes she is capable of the withering putdown and the sharp aside, but she is so very much more than that.

Sylvia very obviously loves good old Roy very much - theirs is a touching relationship of many layers, both funny and achingly sad at the same time. Roy, Hayley and Sylvia have certainly meshed well as characters and they have been a joy to watch of late. It's just such a shame this trio will be broken up early next year with the departure of Hayley.

When Sylvia first arrived she was positioned as a Blanche Hunt replacement. I guess that's why it took me a while to warm to her. There really is just no replacing Blanche. The closest we'll get to that is through her daughter Deirdre - and that would seem like a natural development to me. Sylvia has become her own character and that's why it works. Unlike the other big name of a similar ilk which sadly hasn't. The difference between Sylvia and Gloria Price is like night and day. It's really odd that this has happened as Sue Johnston is just as talented as Stephanie Cole. I guess these things just work or they don't.

Anyway, I'm loving Sylvia Goodwin at the moment and I hope Ms Cole decides to stay in Corrie for the foreseeable future. I think the relationship between Sylvia and Roy will become even more interesting if rumours on Hayley's departure turn out to be true.

Corrie A-Z: G is for Gamma Garments

On Rosamund Street back in the 1960s, there was a haberdashery shop called Gamma Garments that was part of a shop chain. Owned by the never seen Mr Papagopolous, who was of Greek descent, the shop was managed by Leonard Swindley and Emily Nugent. Papagopolous was a precursor to EastEnders launderette owner Mr Papadopolous who was also never seen (although he did make sporadic appearances).

 

Emily merged her baby linen business with Swindley’s draper business in 1961 when they both faced bankruptcy but Swindley sold the shop to Papagopolous and Gamma Garments opened in 1962 with Swindley and Nugent as manager and assistant. They were of one mind and formed a wonderful partnership and were already friends through their Mission connections and Emily was smitten with an unwitting Swindley. The shop was the background for this budding romance that resulted in Emily proposing to Swindley in 1964. He accepted but Emily jilted him at the altar!

 

Doreen Lostock worked in the shop in the early 1960s as did Elsie Tanner in 1965. Swindley left the area when he was promoted to work in the head office of Gamma in 1965 and the shop was put in the hands of ruthless Neil Crossley who was a stark contrast to bumbling Swindley. He would take the profits of the shop for himself. Crossley managed to charm Sheila Birtles and she fell pregnant. They later married and moved to Sheffield. In 1967 Papagopolous decided there was no future for haberdashery and the world of fashion was changing. Gamma was transformed into a boutique and Emily returned from nursing her father with a modern look. Dennis Tanner and Lucille Hewitt were taken on as assistants and the shop continued like this until Papagopolous made the shock decision to sell the shop in 1968. Dave Smith bought the shop and opened a florist called ‘The Posy Bowl’ with Elsie as manageress.

 

And thus the days of Gamma Garments came to an end. These days the shop’s a distant memory and is part of Corrie’s halcyon years. The shop was mentioned last year by Emily at Rita and Dennis’ engagement party.

State of the Street - June 2013

Here's a bit of an opinionated wrap up on the major stories for June on Coronation Street, which just ended on our Canadian screens, and quite a good month it's been, for the most part.

The surrogacy story wound down (and I know many of you out there are thanking the Storyline Gods but I enjoyed it!). Evil David is back and starting to exact his revenge on Nick. But what about Kylie? Dev's quest nearly got him a golf trophe on the back of his skull. But the best thing about June was the Cropper storyline! Superb stuff!

Without further ado, here's a brief run down of next week's Coronation Street on Canadian Screens:

David's plotting backfires a bit so David turns to Tina's shoulder and later on in the week, he reverts to a scary David. Roy opens up to Hayley but it takes a near miss for him to get help. Faye is caught out and Tim pays the price at the edge of Anna's tongue. Norris apologizes and Emily has a solution. Tina struggles to cope. Sinead feels used. Ryan is busted.

Corrie A-Z: F is for Flying Ducks

The pride and joy of No.13 resident Hilda Ogden were the flying ducks on her ‘muriel’. They have become Corrie icons as much as Hilda herself over the years. They appeared on Hilda’s wall from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. One of the ducks infamously would be seen diving into the sea on the mural, and apparently Jean Alexander, who played Hilda, would check this before filming.

 

The flying ducks did appear on the show before debuting on Hilda’s wall. Next-door neighbour Elsie Tanner had some on her wall and they were seen in the very first episode in 1960 as well as during the 1960s. But it seems that Hilda never bequeathed them from Elsie. In fact, she bequeathed them from her Auntie Aggie as she told Sally Webster in 1987. Flying ducks were common ornaments in homes across England at the time.

 

When Hilda left the street in 1987, she took her flying ducks with her. As she told Percy Sugden:

 

"I've come in here more times than I care to remember. Cold. Wet. Tired out. Not a penny in me purse. And seeing them ducks and that muriel... well they've kept me hand away from gas tap. And that's a fact."

 

The flying duck on a downward spiral has become a symbol of the bad luck the Ogdens often had as well as their house being number 13.

Is baby Jake really Tina and Tommy's child?

As one of our readers pointed out by leaving a comment on this blog post here, the baby that Tina has handed over to Izzy and Gary, might not be Izzy and Gary's after all.

Hang on, bear with me, this isn't another discussion about surrogacy. It's about the fact that, as our commenter says: "Doesn't anyone remember that Tina and Tommy slept together the night before the surrogacy procedure was performed? Hmmmm"

Well, I had forgotten it, that's for sure.  So there's every chance that the baby could be Tina and Tommy's and if it is, and Gary's gone and got his name on the birth certificate, it could lead to all manner of carry on for the future.

Cue that famous scene from EastEnders:
"You ain't mah muvver!"
"Yes Iyam!"

The unpopular point of view

Reading all the comments on the various blog posts here and there shows us that everyone has a different opinion and that's great. Lately, there've been a lot of negative reactions to two particular storylines (among others), both of which I've held the opposite view.

Time for me to defend the two storylines I'm enjoying, one of which has surprised me considering I really dislike some of the characters and actors involved. That storyline is the one with Tracy, Rob, Carla and Peter. The other storyline I've enjoyed the whole way through is the surrogacy story. Read more here to find out why.

Craig Charles: "I could be first black Doctor Who"

Craig Charles, who plays Coronation Street's Lloyd Mullaney, has told how he'd be thrilled to become the first black Doctor Who as the search for a new Time Lord continues.

As well as his acting role on Corrie, Craig is also a Funk and Soul DJ - and he said he'd be delighted to become the next Doctor after BBC bosses and show insiders said they're seriously considering casting a black actor.

Craig told Purple Revolver: "Yeah, having a black Doctor Who would be double cool. To be asked by the Beeb would be great, its such a classic show. But I think there would probably be too much cross-over with Red Dwarf, as we've got a new series lined up next year.

Also, I would have to grit my teeth a bit, because the thing about Dr Who that always annoyed me was the graphics are crap. But, even if I can't be the first black Doctor, I am the first black man to own a house on Corrie, which is as good a claim to fame."

Corrie Canada weekly awards for July 1 - 5

Death Stare award: Nobody can do it like David!

Hypocrite award: Gold Star: Katy not being sure she likes Sinead spending time with Joseph.
Norris bitching about people being slaves to mobile phones. His goes off and he quickly answers it but it's only a telemarketer anyway.

Not my fault award: Norris doesn't think Emily's fall was his fault. I think it was. She's too old to be climbing footstools to clean windows.

007 Award: Roy wants Hayley to spy on Beth for him. Roy is going to stay up all night to keep watch.

Cheap shot award: Tina may be doing the wrong thing but Anna didn't have the right to smack her outright like that in public. Izzy may have the right, but Anna doesn't.

Corrie A-Z: F is for Famous Faces

Corrie has had many famous faces making an appearance on the show over the years. While some have appeared before achieving true stardom, others have made guest appearances because it is their dream to appear on the cobbles. While Corrie has had its spin-off A Knight’s Tale, many knights of the realm have appeared on the show – Ben Kingsley (1966-67), Norman Wisdom (2004), Patrick Stewart (1967) and Ian McKellen (2005). Cliff Richard appeared as an extra in the Rovers in 1997 while Trevor McDonald made a cameo appearance during the 40th anniversary live episode in 2000. HRH Prince Charles also made a cameo in the same episode while John Russell, the 13th Duke of Bedford made one in 1973.

 

Many well-known actresses have made appearances on the show as well. Joanna Lumley appeared as Ken Barlow’s beau Elaine Perkins in 1973 while Dynasty star Stephanie Beacham played another of his conquests Martha Fraser in 2009. Former Bond girl Honor Blackman guest appeared as Rula Romanoff who was an old friend of Rita’s in 2005 and Maureen Lipman appeared as snobbish Rovers manager Lillian Spencer in 2002. Are You Being Served? star Mollie Sugden played Laughing Donkey landlady and Annie Walker’s rival Nellie Harvey between 1965 and 1976 while her husband William Moore, of Ronnie Corbett sitcom Sorry! fame, played Betty’s hubby Cyril Turpin between 1969 and 1972. Other actresses include Prunella Scales, June Whitfield, Kathy Staff, Beryl Bainbridge and Lynda Baron.

 

‘Allo ‘Allo! star Gorden Kaye played Elsie Tanner’s nephew Bernard Butler between 1969 and 1970 while The Wombles star Bernard Cribbins starred as Blanche’s boyfriend Wally Bannister in 2003. Keeping Up Appearances stars Patricia Routledge, Judy Cornwell, Josephine Tewson and of course Geoffrey Hughes made appearances in Corrie over the years. Future and former soap stars also made appearances like Peter Dean (EastEnders’ Pete Beale), Arthur Pentelow (Emmerdale’s Henry Wilks), Frazer Hines (Emmerdale’s Joe Sugden), John Bardon (EastEnders’ Jim Branning), June Brown (EastEnders’ Dot Cotton) and Sue Johnston (Brookside’s Sheila Grant). Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts) made her debut in 1979 and was known for her role as Marilyn Gates in Crossroads between 1964 and 1968. Singers and musicians have also made appearances over the years including The Monkees’ Davy Jones, Herman Hermits’ Peter Noone, Slade’s Noddy Holder and West End star Michael Ball. Rock band Status Quo guest appeared at Les and Cilla’s wedding in 2004.

 

Other famous faces have enjoyed a regular stint on the cobbles. Dad’s Army’s Arthur Lowe was draper Leonard Swindley between 1960 and 1965, Nigel Havers has played charming escort Lewis Archer since 2009, Roy Hudd played undertaker Archie Shuttleworth between 2002 and 2003 (with guest appearances in 2006 and 2010), Bradley Walsh played factory tycoon Danny Baldwin between 2004 and 2006, Rula Lenska played crimper Claudia Colby between 2009 and 2011, Keith Duffy played barman Ciaran McCarthy on and off between 2002 and 2011, Kym Marsh has played Michelle Connor since 2006 and Stephanie Cole has played Sylvia Goodwin since 2011.

 

Other famous faces who’ve appeared include Robert Vaughn, Bill Maynard, Keith Barron, Tony Booth, Geoffrey Palmer, Peter Postlethwaite, Peter Kay, Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, Last of the Summer Wine’s Bill Owen, Brian Wilde and Frank Thornton, Fawlty Towers’ Andrew Sachs and Only Fools and Horses’ John Challis.

Mine has to be Ian McKellen as con artist Mel Hutchwright. He had brilliant lines and provided wonderful light relief and had great chemistry with all the senior cast members. One expects him to appear in Emmerdale conning the villagers over there!

Sunday Comments - July 7

So what's David going to do now? Bide his time it seems. He does do the death stare well, doesn't he? He couldn't admit to Kylie that he knows the secret, not when he saw Max's adoring blue eyes. He wasn't happy that Nick helped pay for the cottage. But we're going to have to put up with the death stare now for the foreseeable future, it seems. David didn't manage to sleep in the same bed as Kylie. He's even flashing back to the Hillman incident, the incident that's damaged him so much. He's blaming his weird mood on not liking surprises. Well, considering the surprise he really got, I can't blame him. He did consider chucking himself off a cliff but again, Max seems to have saved him from disaster. He loves her, she loves him, he makes her promise never to leave him.

And so the revenge storyline begins. But he's not taking it against her it seems. David's whole conversation with Nick is rife with double meanings now, he's sniping and being really horrible to Gail and threatening to chuck her out, walking around in a sulk, giving everyone the death stare. How do they not recognize it? How have they not figured out that he's found out about the fling? There's a nice little bond between David and Audrey, isn't there?

Well, conveniently, there's always a sledgehammer around, isn't there? Last time it was Becky. This time it's David and he's wrecking Nick and Leanne's flat without a thought to how upset little Simon will be. I bet it was fun to film though. Nick reckons changing the locks will help make Leanne feel better. I don't think locks have any hope against a sledgehammer and David now has a copy of the new keys, too. David's plan. Drip poison into Nick's ear about Leanne and Peter while also making it clear the poison is eating away at him as well. He's going to rip Nick and Leanne apart for revenge. David's being suspicously kind and helpful to Nick and Leanne. and he's added Gail into the mix by preying on the dislike she already has for Leanne.

Oh stop fussing over Karl, Stella. He's not worth it. Looks like she's got something in mind. Setting up a party and public event just to tell Karl she's setting the wedding date? Weird. Why does Stella need to tell Dev what she's going to do? Weird. These two are definitely going to end up together after all this comes out, I can feel it in me water. (shudder) Stella also feels the need to stick her business into Owen's regarding the money he wants back to Tina. This woman is insufferably interfering.

She's decided on September for the wedding. What odds are you giving that this wedding won't go off at all? Karl has had a bright idea. A wedding in the registry office. Where the heck else would you do it? Would Stella really go through the farce of a white church wedding?

Sylvia and Hayley's solution to Roy's distraction is to pour alcohol down his neck. That's not going to work. Neither is having Beth and Tracy laughing at him from across the pub but Roy has decided Beth is behind the practical joke. Beth is clearly taking revenge and Roy is going to prove it. It really does seem like he's losing the plot and maybe heading for a breakdown. Hayley is getting stressed as well, dealing with Roy. Nobody else takes it seriously so he's going to stay up all night to keep watch to try to catch her.

Sylvia is really worried about Roy and she blames Hayley for putting it all into motion. She really feels all his odd behaviour is stemming from the aftermath and she's right. It's gonna be a long night if you're already nodding off and sucking back on tea at only 10:30 at night! Roy thought staying up all night would help him catch a trickster but he can't keep awake. He just can't comprehend any explanation other than Beth playing tricks. He thinks there might be a clue on Owen's CCTV.

I guess Steve's lame plan isn't really working for Ryan. You didn't really think Steve could come up with any decent plan with women, did you? I have no sympathy for Ryan. I am REALLY getting tired of Chesney always coincidentally either seeing Ryan and Katy together or overhearing conveniently things like Katy wanting the flat to move in with Ryan. REALLY. Owen might not want Ryan under his roof, but it's going to keep Katy at odds with him. Why do I even care?

Sorry, Ryan, you might like Katy but she's a package deal and you're too weak to stand up to her and tell her how you really feel. I laughed at Steve teaching Ryan to diaper a baby using a teddy. At least we know Steve does know how, he looked after Amy quite a lot when she was little. That's one more nail in the relationship coffin and there's Chesney again, witnessing Katy out on a girls' night out with Michelle. Without Joseph. Tiresome. Michelle has put the seed in Katy's head that she still has feelings for Chesney. I think she does too.

Nobody else has any sympathy for Katy who's moaning about being broke. Get a flaming job, then! And Katy's glances at Ches make it clear she really does still have a flicker there, like Michelle suggested. I think Chesney is using Sinead to make Katy jealous, it was clear when she was surprised that he kissed her in front of Katy. It's working, too. What a little hypocrite, not wanting Sinead to be around Joseph when she had no problems moving Joseph in with Ryan.

Tina is in the middle of a firestorm. David defended her decision. He would go against the general flow, wouldn't he? Owen is going to get that baby back no matter how much it costs. Dennis is not pleased that Rita has pledged her life savings to help Tina but Rita doesn't see she has any choice. She might not agree with what Tina's doing bit she's backing her anyway. Now Tina realizes that Rita wants to pledge her money to the cause and she won't have it.

More tedium. Gary and Izzy and Tina and Tommy shouting on the cobbles. I like the surrogacy storyline but this part of it is getting on my wick. They're adding to Tina's guilt and she's starting to have doubts. Suggesting that she breastfeed the baby isn't going to be a good thing if she is having doubts about keeping him and because she wasn't able to do it very well the first time, that added to her upset. Izzy can't help wanting to be informed about the baby's progress and Gary is ready to give up. As much as I think Tina is doing the wrong thing, Anna was well out of order smacking her like that. Some might argue the point. It was a cheap shot. She was screaming at Tina in the middle of the pub and it puts Tina up against the wall of negative public opinion. Even those close to her don't really think she should keep the baby.

*sigh* More shouting and hollering in public, the cafe this time. I don't understand why Tina and Tommy would keep coming into the cafe knowing Anna would be there let along probably running into the rest of the clan. It's really just asking for trouble. Izzy, no matter how angry she is, is still trying to sympathise with Tina and she doesn't think she can take the baby away from Tina. I see what it is. Tina barely recovered from losing her father and doesn't think she can survive giving up the baby. And did you catch the actress flubbing a line? She called the baby Jake but a few days ago she was renaming him Joe.

Insufferably nosy Norris, eavesdropping on an argument has decided Rita and Dennis' marraige is on the rocks. Meanwhile, Emily really did end up on the rocks, tumbling off a footstool. You know, Norris insisted it wasn't his fault but he shouldn't have let a woman her age go up on a footstool to wash the windows anyway. Marcus was coincidenally on the scene. He always is! Even then, it was all about Norris, who didn't want sirens because he was getting a headache. Never mind his "beloved" Emily could have given herself concussion on the cobbles. (It was only a sprained ankle in the end) Have I mentioned lately how much i detest this little worm?

Norris as Nurse is going to drive Emily spare. She's going to take that cane and give him pause for thought. He insists on 24/7 nursing but she's pushing him out the door. Is that guilt? Maybe it's a wakeup call for Emily, too.He thinks Emily's feeling her mortality. It's probably got a lot more to do with Norris and Mary hovering constantly. But it's given Norris pause for thought. Why is he upset that neither Spider nor Freda has been to see Emily in her recovery when he hates having them around and is always spiteful to them? Norris is still hovering over Emily but she hasn't seemed to mind over much. He's being even nastier than usual, though, about all the attention she's getting from everyone including the absent Spider and Freda.
