Meet the woman who's played 12 different Corrie roles

While it remains true that no one can beat Dave Dutton's claim to Coronation Street fame, as the man who's acted 11 different roles on the cobbles.  Read all about him here.

There is someone who's been on Coronation Street in more roles than Dave - and it's a woman, Ann Aris.  With thanks to Corriepedia for letting us know about Ann and for the information below.

Ann holds the current record for the most credited parts on Coronation Street with twelve roles to her name:

1. Kay Miller, friend of Sylvia Matthews in April 1976. 

2. Ratepayers Association secretary Mrs Mottershead in April 1978.

3. The Registrar at the wedding of Kevin Webster and Sally Seddon in October 1986.

4. The Usher at the trial of Alan Bradley in October 1989.

5. Newton & Ridley Secretary in September 1992.

6. Bettabuys senior manager Mrs Waters in July 1993.

7. The Assistant Registrar at the wedding of Curly Watts and Raquel Wolstenhulme in December 1995.

8. A Woman on a golf course who found Fred Elliott injured there in July 1997.

9. The Magistrate at the preliminary hearing of Deirdre Rachid on charges of fraud in January 1998.

10. Barrister Fiona Kingsman-Lloyd at the trial of Les Battersby for assault on Mick Hopwood (a trumped-up charge) in May 2003.

11. Judge Fortune at the at the preliminary hearing of Tracy Barlow for the murder of Charlie Stubbs in January 2007.

12. The Judge at the trial of Becky Granger for vandalism in November 2008.

13. Her most recent connection with Corrie was in The Road to Coronation Street in September 2010 in which she played the part of actress Nita Valerie who appeared in one of the 1960 dry runs as Ena Sharples.

So there you have it. Dave Dutton is the man who's played the highest number of Coronation Street male roles and Ann Aris is the woman who's played the highest number of Coronation Street female roles.

What we need now, of course, is for them both to return for another part - the one where they fall in love and get married, to each other.

Now that really would be a soap wedding to celebrate.

Gail out, Maria in?

Maria's sick of living in the flat, which we'd all forgotten all about until twenty minutes back when the Sutherland/Connor household were arguing over breakfast, and Gail needs to put David's rent up because she's £40,000 worse off. It all seems like too much of a coincidence that M'reeuh's domestic arrangements have come to the fore again.

Therefore, M'reeuh and Marcus will buy Gail's house - or maybe do a part exchange with the flat? (I don't recall who owns the flat, sorry). Gail and David and Tina [edited by Rebecca: Kylie! Kylie! Whoops, wishful thinking eh] and Max can live in the flat, and Maria gets a nice family home just ripe for the rumoured new baby to arrive in!

(A comment says Audrey owns the flat, so I can really see this happening. She forgives Gail and Gail moves into her flat)

I'm just speculating, of course! But I'd put a few quid on it, at least.

Making the most of Mandy

I love Lloyd Mullaney on Coronation Street and suspect most Corrie fans do, that'll be the reason ITV have seen fit to give him a family of his own. And so far, we've done our best to get our heads round a fully formed family turning up for Lloyd and we've given them the benefit of the doubt.

And so we have Jenna who's settling in nicely and believable as Lloyd's daughter, I feel.  Krissi Bohn who plays her is an excellent actress and while she might be romantically drawn to Sophie Webster right now, I think she could do so much better and hope she'll move on and find another lady love soon.

But what about Mandy the mum?  What do we fans think about her?  Well, I'm in two minds about this one.

On one hand, I don't think Mandy fits in. For me, she's not believable as either Jenna's mum or Lloyd's romantic interest. It just doesn't work for this fan on that level.

But on the other hand, ooh, the other hand, and here's where I think her strength lies, I'm absolutely loving Mandy working behind the bar of the Rovers. There's a touch of the soul of Betty about her with her crossed arms under an ample bosom, the knowing looks, the  'don't mess with me' countenance as she serves up the hotpots.  I'd like to see more of Mandy as her own woman rather than as Lloyd's lover.  She's a strong woman, independent, forthright and funky.  I like her and hope Corrie make the most of Mandy. What do you think?

Coronation Street actors who return as different characters

But there's a good article on The Radio Times by journalist and Corrie fan David Brown, who writes about Weathefield rovers who return. 

This was no doubt prompted by an article in this week's Sun which used twitter comments saying fans were angry that actor Joe Duttine had returned to Corrie as one character when we'd already seen him play another. Well, if you follow us and read us regularly, you'd have found that out some weeks ago. 

Anyway, back to the Radio Times where they mention some of the actors who have turned up in Corrie more than once in different roles, but none of them beat Dave Dutton!

Judgemental Award: Loved the David and Kylie tag team.

Poison Pen award: Lewis made sure that Gail and Audrey wouldn't make it up.

Spare Part award: I think Fiz feels a bit like a spare part, Tyrone is so focussed and obsessed with trying to see Ruby and she can't help at all.

Your Corrie heroes and villains

Simple question this time. This is mainly because it's Sunday and I'm feeling particularly languid. Languid as a lily as Kenneth Williams used to say. Anyway I wanted to post something that would receive interesting replies so that when Countryfile comes on later I have something Corrie-related to distract me.

So here goes. If you had to pick one Coronation Street character who you particularly love at the moment and one you particularly hate, who would they be? Only one each please, and remember I am asking for characters, not actors! Let's keep it nice! 

If I had to choose, given recent events on the cobbles, I'd opt for the fabulous, fragrant Mrs Audrey Roberts as my current favourite, mainly due to her conduct during the Lewis/Gail climax (Ok, sorry for using the word climax here). And the character I currently dislike the most would have to be Rob Whatsisname from t'faktry. I know I have previously said he serves no purpose, but I'd rather that than see him draft Tracy-luv into the faktry! Please, God, save us all! 

So let's have your Corrie hero(ine) and villain(ess) from the past few weeks. And help distract me from Countryfile!

Fab Photo - Archie Street

It's Friday again so it's time for this week's fab Coronation Street photo. However, this week we bring you not Coronation Street but Archie Street. When Granada gave the go ahead for the first 16 episodes, Tony Warren and designer Denis Parkin drove round the back streets of Salford and picked Archie Street in Ordsall as the inspiration for the set. The street appeared in the original closing credits and was used for outdoor filming on occasion until its demolition in 1971.

Sunday Comments February 17

The truth comes out. Gail's family spills into the room and they're all disgusted, shocked and appalled. Gail implores her mother, they didn't mean to hurt her but Audrey is well and truly hurt. Lewis' face does show a bit of regret while Gail's back is to him. All David can say is "It's disgustin'" They all regroup to the Bistro and filling Leanne in. Audrey is heartbroken with betrayal! Gail now thinks her mother will never speak to her again  but David and Kylie both raked her over the coals for breaking Audrey's heart and orders them both to try to make amends. Doesn't look like Lewis wants that but goes with Gail. Gail was very, very sorry and stands in the wrong and admits it.  Audrey's gin-soaked sarcasm isn't inclined to be peace-making. Gail defends herself, Audrey calls Lewis on his shenanigans, all of them. Eileen and Gail! Great, great bickering!!! Lewis has Gail well and truly on the hook now and "reluctantly" ended up allowing himself to be persuaded. They're off to Italy.

Audrey got support from her old friend Rita who thinks Gail's been completely sucked in. It's more true than she realizes. It's hard for Audrey to see Gail and Lewis nuzzling on the street but Lewis now knows the money is in the account and he knows Nick has her account details. The penny drops. Can he get into the computer? Can he figure out Nick's password? Well, yes, because Nick is an idiot and uses his own name as password. He nearly got caught by Kylie and hid under a skeleton of a desk? He must have been there ages. Did Leanne not notice he was missing?

It's all very contrived so that Lewis could overhear Nick and Kylie talk about their one night stand. Up to now, this storyline has been good fun to watch but this makes it hard to swallow. He had the details printed out, but he needed Kylie for Gail's password for her online banking. He can admit his scheme to Kylie because he has her right where he wants her. I didn't think Kylie could go any paler! I feel so bad for Kylie being blackmailed by Lewis. She's built up a half ways decent relationship with Gail and she's being forced to damage it when this comes out because it will. It always does. Sally is horrified that Gail is putting herself at risk but Gail can't see it. The Phrase of Doom, What has she got to lose... sealed her fate.

All the dialogue was superb. So much that Lewis said was misinterpreted by Gail and we, watching, knew exactly what he meant. He broke his news via video. Gail is shattered and can't understand why this could happen to her and he's got away with the cash. He took the 40K and everything else and she thinks he found the password on his own. I don't know how he couldn't have found it, he spent time before rifling through her papers, surely he'd have known where the password was all along? The ultimate insult, though, wasn't just the Ti Amo that was for Audrey, not Gail, it was paying Audrey back with Gail's money and Audrey is keeping it! It looked like Audrey and Gail might have had a chance to make peace but when Audrey kept the money, I think their feud isn't going away any time soon.  Lewis' last gesture was to send Audrey flowers but it didn't make her outraged, just sad, and a bit bemused I think

Poor Gail! She's really down in the dumps, in the doldrums and feeling humiliated. Everyone's talking about her and Eileen gets the details from Maria and spreads them around too. I do feel bad for Gail and i know most of you don't. I know it's her own fault for being naive and letting a known con man sucker her. I can't help it, I love watching Gail, happy or miserable! Her plan to increase David and Kylie's rent, along with getting her job back, probably would work to repay the loan but David prefers to move out (and spend even more money!)


Jenna lost her job. She's disappointed but she knew what would happen. She told the truth and must pay the price including a rollocking from her mother who's more angry that she wasn't told. Jenna knows her mother is disappointed in her and is having a hard time accepting it, it's more than the job. Mandy admits she'd prefer if Jenna were not gay, "Normal" she throws at her daughter. Ouch. And she threw it back at Sophie. Sophie thinks the way is clear for them now there's nothing to stop them. Talk about adding insult to injury and it's got nothing to do with "it's meant to be". I thought it may take some time for Jenna and Mandy to make friends again but she does love Jenna and ok, she wishes Jenna weren't gay but it looks like she can move on and get her head around it. It *is* a lot to get your head around at first. Jenna went back to Sophie like a gravitational pull, someone that knows what she's going through as she is newly "out" and getting her own head around it, too. And a date was made. Obviously thought Jenna knows she's gay, it's hard for her to be "out" about it yet. And the date was a bit uncomfortable, especially when Lloyd and Mancy walked in. Nobody could relax then. Mandy is churlish and aggressive but it pushed Jenna right into Sophie's arms. Probably the wrong way to be in a relationship. When will this storyline be over? There's no chemistry between them and nothing in common.

Faye's now all gob and attitude and there's a holy row when Faye wants to go out and Anna prevents her. Further rows, further attitude. I don't think shadowing Faye is going to work. Military Maneuvers, Roy called it. That's only going to push her towards him even further. The risk assessment sounds like the Social is happy with the situation and it might be a good idea to let her see her dad.

Fiz is trying to gloss over the gossip while Tyrone is frantic. Well at least this has Tina and Tommy talking again. Sounds like Tyrone is still getting the runaround trying to get his visit. He's obsessed. Fiz probably feels like a spare part. Julie is Kirsty's defending dragon and Kirsty's milking it for all she can. Kirsty pretends to be all self-sacrificing and agrees to a supervised visit. Kirsty's playing out her plan and keeping Ruby from Tyrone. Tyrone's whole world has shrunk to that baby and his angst and obsession might come between him and Fiz eventually. He's frantic and resentful, all of which is understandable but if Fiz isn't able to help, or he's not able to take comfort from her, it's going to make her feel isolated from him, like he's pushing her away. Poor Tyrone, he's just not getting a break. He can't see his kid, and the solicitor is advising him to  plead guilty and hope for a suspended sentence. He's frustrated and angry and pretty soon he's going to push even Fiz away. It's frustrating to watch too, to see people that have been friends for so many years think the worst of him. It's frustrating to watch how Kirsty pulls all the strings and pushes the buttons of all the people that believe her, turning them further against Tyrone.

Tracy gets all dolled up, she's signed the papers and goes to the pub to give them to Steve in the pub, maybe to show him what he's losing? Rob is there, too and takes it all in. Well now he knows Tracy's free anyway. I think that was a bonus result. Peter wasn't very sympathetic lol! Tracy is determined to use Rob and his to get a new job. Seems like everyone does that, Eva for one. Rob's arrogant but Tracy likes it and he didn't even blink when she asked for a job. He thinks it's a test. He doesn't realize she's using him to get up Michelle's nose. Clearly Rob didn't tell anyone Tracy was starting at the factory. Carla is still the majority partner, can't she kibosh this? Why isn't Kirsty working? Did she quit? Carla reluctantly interviewed Tracy. Under other circumstances, Tracy would be qualified to do the job but as troublemaker in residence, it's going to be a bumpy ride. Carla thinks it'll keep Rob pre-occupied. Rob keeps doing this with his women but the difference this time is that Tracy isn't in love with Rob, she sees him as someone to be used to better her means. I'd say Poor Tracy but i don't feel one bit sorry for her. It was funny when she realized she wasn't working in the office, but working *for* Kirk packing boxes. She's hoping to get under Michelle's skin but all the rest of it is going to wear thin pretty quickly I think. It's working just the same though, Michelle is already gritting her teeth even if she's enjoying Tracy's knock down off the high horse.

The olives have been a running joke all week! There's even a couple of crates of them in Gail's kitchen!

Sylvia's back and in top form! She went through 2000 teabags just in the short time that Roy was there and back! She's here for a visit. Apparently. But Milton and his daughter have other ideas. Milton has sent all Sylvia's bits and pieces back to her so it looks like that's the end of that and we've got her back. But what happened? Sylvia didn't really look all that surprised that he apparently called her bluff. Sounds like she didn't get on with his daughter but there's something else she "got out of her system". What's that? Sylvia seems intent on not working in the cafe if she can get away with it. She never minded before. What's going on?

Poor Maria! Her flat is in chaos and the rat is on the loose. I don't understand how that rat could be scurrying around and Ozzy the dog only gets excited when he gets hold of a teddy bear. Surely a dog would have been after that small moving animal and cornered it somewhere. If i was a dog, i'd lose my doggy mind if a little animal was in my house loose like that! Finding it in Maria's bra was hilarious! I bet she never wears it again!

Lewis Archer: Corrie's best baddie?

Last night saw a farewell to Lewis Archer and with him, Nigel Havers. There were one or two raised eyebrows when it was first announced that Havers was joining the programme. For many in the UK, his name was synonymous with the 1980s hit BBC comedy 'Don't Wait Up' in which he played an NHS doctor whose father had a practise in Harley Street. Havers was also a big hit as Ralph Gorse in ITV's 'The Charmer'. Maybe it was the latter which had more of an influence on the enigmatic Lewis.

The man who caused havoc for Gail and family was certainly a bad boy but he was never going to be another Charlie Stubbs or a Richard Hillman. Lewis was all about persuasion and seduction and as a baddie, he was more 'swirling cape and twirling moustache' than pure evil.

Some wonderful writing took us all from distrusting Lewis, to having a grudging respect and then all the way back to distrust again. His middle phase, living with Audrey and providing sage advice to Nick at the Bistro was a joy. Lewis was all a bit of a chancer but there seemed to be a realisation that he was getting no younger and perhaps had lost his zest for criminal life. Audrey provided him with the stability and companionship that he needed. Gail and Gloria robbed him of that happiness.

However, despite fleecing Gail of £40K and blackmailing the horrified Kylie, Lewis' love for Audrey never dissipated and although he's gone forever, there was reassurance for heartbroken Mrs Roberts that she was the true love of his life.

Will Lewis ever set foot on the cobbles again? Should he? Is Lewis Archer the ideal Corrie baddie?

Who knew the Corrie cast had green fingers?

I love this story. Last night I was reading former Coronation Street producer Bill Podmore's memoir about his life working on Corrie, and it's a great read. Some of the stories are familiar, and one in particular I had heard of before but it really makes me smile. 

Apparently the Coronation Street green room, where the cast relax between recording scenes, has a permanent fixture in the form of a very large, lustrous plant. It was originally brought into Granada way back in 1961 by Noel Dyson, who played Ken mother, Ida Barlow. She left it as a present to the cast when she was written out that year. 

Despite the dankness of the original green room the plant flourished and was tended to by many of the Corrie cast. Bill Podmore recounted how Pat Phoenix (Elsie Tanner) even crossed a picket line during an industrial dispute to water the plant and keep it thriving. I don't know about you, but I never had Pat Phoenix down as a Percy Thrower type! In the late 70s and early 80s the green room was moved and the plant started to die. It was at this point several of the cast began to think Coronation Street was cursed!

At that time there had been several instances of bad luck which coincided with the poor health of the plant. Many of the Street's longstanding actors either left or died, including Jack Howarth, Bernard Youens, Peter Dudley and Violet Carson. Doris Speed also retired. The cast began to think the survival of the plant meant the survival of the show! Apparently this had a lot to do with Bill Roache's druid beliefs, but we won't explore that any further!


I had heard about this plant before. A few years ago I read Amanda Barrie's autobiography - another excellent read. Amanda recounted how the plant went missing at the time of Corrie's 40th anniversary. The green room was being tarted up as Prince Charles was due to visit. Several of the cast panicked when they couldn't locate the plant - Amanda eventually found it in a skip and brought it back to life.

Anyway, I love this rather sweet little story, and I wonder if the plant is still thriving in the green room today? If the suspicions of the original Corrie cast are true, I certainly hope so!

Gail gets Nailed

It was a sight that should have had us weeping into our Friday night fish and chips (mushy peas too if that's to your fancy . . .) Poor old deluded Gail Pot-Til-Til-Pla-Hil-Mac, face of a thousand miseries, realising that she's been well and truly shafted. Although not in the way she had anticipated. People of Britain, weep openly for this most wronged of women. Shed sympathetic tears.

Having said that, I treated myself to a jolly good laugh as Gail in her tabard reaped what she had so richly sown. Slumped on the sofa, I suddenly realised that I've never really liked Gail. As a child, I always loathed that hideous sheepskin coat that she shuffled around in. There was a brief ray of sunshine during her Elsie years but even then, I always favoured slutty Suzie Birchall. The came Our Brian with his Farrah Fawcett hairdo and dodgy accent which is when things really started to go down hill.

For over thirty years it has felt like an endless tale of Gail versus the world. Horrible Ivy (and her disgusting clunky brown tea service), philandering Martin Platt, a wealth of disappointing children (frail, elderly Nick, unappetising Sarah and Weasel David), the micro-bijou house, the council house, Ivy's spare room, murderous Hillman, tedious Joe, prison, cackling Eileen . . . on it goes.

There were good times I suppose. Gail's years in the café with Alma and Phyllis were fun and  . . . err, no that's it to be honest. Her best friend, indeed only friend, seems to be Sally whose moral pontificating is enough to have you jumping from the faktry roof. In fact that only person Gail even seems to have any social contact with is the doleful Eileen, rumbling across t'cobbles like a Primark tractor, barbed comment at the ready.

Where to next for the former Miss Potter? Well, the only was is up. No doubt she will repair to a corner, don one of those grim polo-necked creations and begin building bridges. Literally. Owen should employ her as a hod carrier.

Audrey will eventually come around, Nick will be supportive and David will sneer a few one-liners in her sorry direction. For Gail though, it could be the chance to start over. New home, new job and a fresh outlook on life. I'm kidding of course! We want to see her wallow in an olive jar of misery and strike up a relationship with someone totally unsuitable. Rob quite likes a challenge . . .

Natalie Gumede - from Corrie's crazy Kirsty to comedy?

Natalie Gumede, who plays crazy Kirsty Soames on Coronation Street, was interviewed this week in OK magazine and joked about what she'd like to do when she leaves the cobbles.

Because leave she surely must as all Corrie villains get their comeuppance, even if they're let out of jail early after being sent down for 15 years for manslaughter. Yes, I'm talking about you, Tracy Barlow.

Anyway, in OK magazine, Natalie says this about playing Kirsty: "The place I have to go to emotionally is ugly. It’s great to be challenged as an actor, but it’s daunting because unless you’ve been in a situation like Tyrone and Kirsty or you know someone who has, it’s so hard to comprehend.

“I’ve been so blessed to be given the chance to play such a challenging character and work with such great actors.

“It’s so different to anything I’ve done before, but I think I’d like to do a comedy next!”

Whatever Natalie does next after leaving Coronation Street, we wish her all the very best and know she's going to shine in whatever she does.

Sneak Preview for next week's Canadian Corrie, Feb 18 - 22

Without further ado, here's a brief run down of next week's Coronation Street on Canadian Screens:

Kirsty wants Tyrone but Tyrone doesn't want her. Tyrone feels he only has one choice and asks for help to put his plan in motion. Fiz lends a hand, too. Gail reels from Lewis' betrayal and has to face life possibly homeless. Audrey has a solution that favours David and Kylie. How is Gail going to cope?

Marcus and Maria find a bump in the road and later evict their tennants. Tracy's new job irritates Michelle. Result! Sylvia is evasive and covering a secret. Faye is determined to know her father.
