Catherine Tyldesley interview: Eva's baby bombshell

When Eva confides in Shona that she doesn’t feel well, has it even crossed her mind that she could be pregnant?
No not at all, she just thinks she’s tired and she’s coming down with something, it’s totally not crossed her mind.

So when Shona suggests she could be pregnant what does Eva start to think?
She starts to panic a little bit but in the back of her mind she really believes she’s not pregnant, so it’s a massive shock and a huge irony when she finds out that she is, especially when you think a year ago she would have given anything to settle down and have babies, but after everything that transpired this is just the worst thing that could have happened.

What are Eva’s initial thoughts about what she might do or is she just in shock?
Initially she’s just in shock, then after she’s been to the doctors and discussed things she realises she can’t see any other way out of this situation than to have a termination. All she’s ever wanted is to meet prince charming, settle down and have a family so the thought of getting rid of this baby is not an easy decision at all for Eva. She feels completely stuck with no way out. 

Does Eva know if the baby is Aidan or Adam’s?
After she’s spoken to the doctor she knows but she’s not sure she’s ready to talk to the father, it’s all such a mess. Eva being Eva and not thinking about consequences decides there’s nothing she can do other than to have an abortion.

At that point the only person she’s confided in is Shona, is she supportive of Eva?
They’re not particularly friends but Shona just stumbles across Eva’s secret and having had a child herself she recognises the signs and I think she can see how vulnerable Eva is. Shona’s really good to Eva, she’s got a kind heart and she tries to support her.

Does Eva not feel that she can confide in Leanne or Toyah?
She does want to but she finds it really difficult, ordinarily she’d tell Leanne everything but something that’s stuck in her mind is that Leanne was quite judgemental of her at the wedding and I think she’s a little bit scared of Leanne saying I told you so, this is karma. It’s difficult for her because she does normally lean on Leanne. Then there’s just no way she feels she could talk to Toyah about it, Toyah and Eva are like chalk and cheese, they do really care about each other even though they often clash, but Eva has seen what Toyah has been through trying to have a child and she couldn’t bear the thought of talking to her about possibly terminating her own pregnancy.

How did you feel when you were told about this storyline and the mess that Eva was going to find herself in? 
It’s amazing, I just think the storylines that Kate Oates is bringing to the table are fantastic. But my heart bleeds for Eva all the time because she doesn’t think about consequences and it’s such a great tragedy the way it’s all ended up after the wedding. Eva and Aidan were perfect for each other and if only she’d managed to not be so stubborn things could have been very different.

Do you think Aidan is the one Eva should have been with rather than Adam?
It’s difficult because she is actually starting to fall for Adam. For a long time it was just Aidan Aidan Aidan but at the moment Aidan doesn’t want to know and Adam is offering her everything that she wanted. So her head has literally just been turned, she’s just starting to fall for Adam when she finds out that she’s pregnant, which makes things even worse, it’s such bad timing. Before the pregnancy if Aidan had come back on the scene and said let's get back together then I think Eva would because I think they were perfect for each other and that’s where the sadness lies.

Coronation Street's 63 barmaids - can you name them all?

The Daily Mirror have a double page spread today (pages 14 and 15 if you're interested) with pictures of 63 of the barmaids who have worked in the Rovers Return.

It's a nice tribute to Doreen Keogh, who has passed away aged 91.

Doreen played the first of the Rovers barmaids Concepta Riley in the show.

Chesney and Sinead's wedding venue in Coronation Street

Ryecroft Hall in Audenshaw made yet another appearance in Coronation Street last night. This time it was the venue for Sinead and Chesney's drama of a wedding in the show.

It's a venue that's been used for filming many Corrie weddings.

It was where Rana married Zeedan, Eileen married Phelan, where Gail married Michael Rodwell and also Joe McIntyre. It's also been the filming location used for the weddings of  Karl and Stella, Steve and Becky, Rita and Dennis, Jason and Sarah, Graeme and Xin, Liz and Vernon.

Corrie Canada Sneak Peeks Jan. 29 - Feb. 2

Another Corrie Wedding Bites the Dust

The little family that is not meant to be

Tonight was the rather rushed wedding of Chesney and Sinead. I say "rushed" because it was Chesney that pushed for a quick wedding and it's one he lived to regret.

The Bride and her ex-lover exchanged regretful glances when she was on the way to the registry office and Chesney, after already jumping when Joseph referred to Sinead as his new mum, saw it and thought the worst. Chesney is the person most in need of a self esteem boost, more than anyone I've ever seen. It's his Achilles heel. He comes by it honestly, having been brow beaten by that mother of his all his young life. He decided that Sinead would leave him eventually and it would be too much upheaval for little Joseph who had already lost his mother.

Chesney is a good father, you have to give him that.It's true, the little lad was getting close to Sinead but that was the problem. If he got too attached, he'd be devastated if things went wrong. Sinead was appalled that Chesney had so little faith in her and she's right. Plus, Chesney still doesn't quite believe Sinead is over Daniel, I think.

Anyway, the wedding day had some good moments, appalling fashion and  development of a few side stories which I won't go into here. I liked Sinead's wedding dress, it was very much "her". I loved all the different things Kirk wanted to say in his speech, starting with knowing Chesney longer than he's known himself! Loved Sinead's mother and nan wearing outfits that wouldn't have looked out of place on the nearest "stroll". Only Gemma could get away with wearing GANG earrings to a wedding!

I didn't much like Carla advising Daniel to break up the happy couple or to swoop in and take advantage of the carnage afterwards. I don't think the mature and evolved Carla would have done that. If Sinead had really still had feelings for Daniel, she'd have come to him so he's right to back off. I didn't like that it turns out Henry is dating Gemma for a bet though I wasn't surprised either and I look forward to her tearing him a new one when she finds out and making him look like a right idiot.

Weatherfield Gazette headline causes mayhem again

I remember the good old days. You know the ones. The days when a misprinted headline would appear in the Weatherfield Gazette and we'd blog it and have a giggle.  Well, those days are gone my friend, gone.

Many of us would have spotted the error in the headline in the Weatherfield Gazette recently on Coronation Street.  There should have been an apostrophe in New Year's Day and there wasn't.  But instead of blogging it, I just sighed and let this one go.  What's the point of complaining, I thought, it doesn't make any difference. It doesn't make things better.

But a bunch of journalists - I'm not sure what the collective noun is for journalists - are up in arms over the Corrie apostrophe omission. Up. In. Arms. And rightly so, of course.

Today, Hold The Front Page reports that journalists are urging ITV to do their research, as far as representing journalists on screen go.   The scene on Monday’s night’s episode which showed a press pack doorstep the Nazir's after Luke's death prompted reaction from journalists across the land, who took to social media to voice their criticism.  You can read some of the comments here.

And yes, the missing apostrophe was commented on too.

Northern Echo reporter Charlotte Bowe added: “A lot of things are far-fetched in soap land, but it would be nice if Coronation Street made a tiny effort to portray how journalists and media law actually works. Not to mention exclamation marks slapped all over The Weatherfield Gazette.”

It's not the first time (and I'm sure it won't be the last) that The Weatherfield Gazette headlines were wrong.

Interview: Dolly-Rose Campbell on Gemma and Henry

What happens when Chesney invites Henry to the wedding as Dolly’s plus one?
Henry comes across as unkeen about the whole thing but Gemma thinks it’s lovely and that he is her proper boyfriend now if he is her plus one to something important like Chesney’s wedding. Gemma sees it as Henry being accepted into the fold. 

Why does Gemma get the impression that Henry is less that enthusiastic about the wedding?
Henry comes out with a few comments that rub Gemma up the wrong way and he seems like he is being snidey about Chesney and the wedding. 

Is that to do with his class?
It could be to do with the fact that Gemma and her friends are not like the people that he is used to which has been a concern for Gemma throughout their relationship so far. But his general attitude makes Gemma think that maybe this might not work out. 

How does that make Gemma feel?
Gemma feels underappreciated because Henry is being condescending. 

What happens when Henry calls for Gemma at No.5, Chesney’s house, on the day of the wedding?
It’s the morning of the wedding, they are all getting ready and Henry won’t sit down and Gemma thinks it’s because he disapproves of Chesney’s home. 

Does it get any better when they get to the wedding?
No, he keeps making sarcastic comments at the wedding and Gemma thinks that because of this, he puts a curse on the wedding. Because of the way he behaves it puts her on a higher string. 

What is Gemma’s reaction when he starts to make these sarcastic comments?
Gemma thinks that she is sick of him and if she is not good enough for him then he is not good enough for her so she breaks up with him. 

What happens when she tells him it’s over? Is that how she really feels?
Gemma is sad to see him go but she’s not going to be made to feel inferior by anyone so she has to make that decision because that is the way he is making her feel and that is not good enough for her. 

What’s Gemma’s thoughts when Henry begs her for a second chance?
At first she is surprised to see him come back but he apologises and he tells her that he really likes her and she falls for him all over again. 

Could Gemma be getting in over her head with Henry?
Gemma is a rough diamond but Henry is not really like anybody that she’s known before and she was overwhelmed by him when she met him. 

What did you first think when you read the storyline about Gemma having a love interest?I was chuffed because I thought it would be really exciting and different for Gemma; it’s a new side to Gemma that people haven’t seen yet. It’s been great fun and I’m loving working with George, who plays Henry, so it’s been nice.

Five Things We Learned In Corrie This Week

Don't employ Sean.  Fresh from being sacked from the medical centre (for shouting patient details across the cafe) and the pub (for shouting abuse at the customers), Sean needed to get a new job.  First, Carla had to explain to this forty-something man that people looking for work generally have a CV.  Then, while using someone else's computer (without their permission), he somehow performed a factory reset and destroyed all their precious data.  So that's poor customer skills, no respect for confidential information, a lack of business awareness and zero computer knowledge.  I'm sure the job offers will be rolling in.

Fiz is great at doling out advice - not so good at taking it.  "Grab life by the good bits!" she instructed Chesney via Skype from somewhere in Australia Birmingham.  "You're about to have the best day of your life!"  Yes, it really is wonderful when you marry the person you love, isn't it Fiz?  Incidentally, how many years have you been engaged to Tyrone now with no sign of a wedding band?

Weddings get Maria going.  Bless him, Craig went to Maria for sex advice this week, wondering how you know if a girl is "in the mood."  Resident strumpet Maria's reply, surprisingly, wasn't just "is it a day with a Y in it."  She further pronounced that weddings turn her on; what she failed to add was they usually climax with her attempting to mount the groom as he's cutting the cake.

No, Do!  Don't go, Do!  Sinead's big day was a disaster on many levels, mainly emotional, but especially fashion.  Her mum wore thigh high boots, Beth looked like a disco television on the fritz, and the wedding gown seemed to be a go-go girl's minidress with a pair of Laura Ashley net curtains draped over the top.  As for Maria's 1980s power lesbian blouse and jacket, I don't know where to begin.  What wasn't a disaster was the return of Sinead's nan, the marvelous Nancy, whose star power shone in her every appearance.  Please sign up the former Doreen Corkhill as a full-time character immediately, and if you can get John McArdle in as her long-lost husband too even better.

We are all Roy Cropper sometimes.  Brian was off on one of his interminable monologues about Weatherfield architecture, when Cathy revealed she liked a bandstand.  "Is it a building?" Brian queried, and I, sat on my sofa at home, said "It's a structure."  Moments later, Roy intervened to confirm that yes, it is a structure.  I will be buying a cagoule and a shopping bag this afternoon.

 As a tribute to poor Luke, @merseytart has spent the last week listening to flamenco house.  It's what he would have wanted.
