New Year for, New Directions for Coronation Street

2011 has begun and the anniversary crash and aftermath have been put behind us. The Powers That Be (TPTB) have promised that Coronation Street will never be the same after the revelations.

Certainly the lives of some of the characters won't be but they'll rebuild the broken buildings and life will resemble normality for most. I blogged about what I'd like to see happen with some of the upcoming stories and characters over here. There are some SPOILERS for Canadians in that blog post! If you don't want to know, don't read but please leave a comment here if you want to chat about what you'd like to see happen next for our favourite characters!

Will the dead rise on Corrie?

(This post was originally posted by Merseytart on the Coronation Street Blog in December, 2010.)

When Phil Redmond was planning the famous "body under the patio" storyline for Brookside (another UK soap), he concluded that Trevor Jordache should stay hidden "until the actors decide to leave".

Corrie's got its own version of the hidden corpse now: Colin Fishwick, buried underneath Underworld's floor.  So the question is - will he ever be found?

It's a well known soap rule that people must be punished for their misdeeds.  Karmic retribution is waiting for John Stape somewhere along the line.  But I can't help thinking that Colin's going to stay there and never be seen again.

Think about it: he's not just buried, he's entombed.  Colin's inside a solid lump of concrete six feet under a factory.  He's not going anywhere, and Carla Connor's not likely to order the ground be torn up any time soon.

Brookside had a drainage issue cause flooding in the gardens, meaning that the neighbours dug around the patio and found Trevor's body.  It's possible that a similar case of shoddy workmanship could turn up at Underworld - but how hard is it to get concrete wrong?  And even if they did dig down, would they find Colin?

I'm curious to see what the writers do with this.  Perhaps Colin will only resurface once John has confessed all.  Perhaps he'll return from the dead as a zombie.  Perhaps - and right now this is my favourite - perhaps John will literally get away with murder.  There's something about his bumbling crime spree that I find hilarious, and I'm hoping it'll continue for a long time yet.

Fat Brenda's Cream Horn

Hello Loveys! Happy New Flamin' Year!

I saw John Stape last night loveys and he looked very troubled, I said to him 'where there's no Joy there's always Hope John love'. Did it make him feel better? Did it flamin' hell! He sat down on the cab office chair and told me everything. I started to panic, 'Pass us me Dunhills lovey' I wheezed, 'quick lovey, pass us me Dunhills'. He kept banging on about how I had to forgive him and then he put his hand over me mouth - so I kicked him loveys, I kicked him right in his mini kievs! He was belting after that and we had a Mellow Birds and a laugh. He's a right character!

I think somebody's suffering from sleep deprivation; Kevin, he's like a man posessed! He wants to pour himself a glass of Calpol and 'chill out' as the young folk say. If I was Sally he'd have more than sleepless nights to worry about, I'm a dab hand with a pair of rusty scissors and I'd have him hobbling around them cobbles for months!

Nice to see Maria falling for the right fella again innit! Hot on the heels of Liam - I love Carla - Connor and Tony - I'm psychotic - Gordon she's started dating Chris - I'm proper scary - Gray. I'll tell you what Maria why don't you just cut out the middle man and go straight to Strangeways for yer next date! Honestly, and they say Kirk's the thick one.

I landed on me feet last night loveys and had me tea with Ken and Deirdre. We had shop bought pie, peas and crisps. Belting! That Ciaran thinks he's too posh for food like that with his flamin' northern tapas, or whatever it's called, but you cannot beat a bit of Deirdre pre-prepared reheated magic! She puts Antony Worral Thompson to shame... mind you that goes for everyone on the planet dunnit, I can't stand that little bearded weirdo!

Deirdre was very kind and offered to lend me some of her power suits for me next court appearance - although why she needed power suits to work for Weatherfield Council I don't know, she looked like a bronchial Alexis Colby! You can say what you like about Deirdre though, she's a cracking figure on her (it's probably 'cos of summat glandular) so nowt fitted me. I couldn't even get me leg in - I did still have me Uggs on at the time though!

Trust Claire Peacock, someone badmouths her recently deceased husband and what does she do? Gently pushes 'em! If it wasn't for those cheap prison made stilettoes snapping, Tracy would've given her a right pasting. She should have got me to do it, I'd have knocked Tracy into the middle of next week - hopefully to a Tuesday or a Wednesday so you lot wouldn't have to see her for a while.

Becky bravely offered to take the blame so she could cost the tax payer loads more money in wasted police time and court costs. She's had more cash spent on her by the state than the Queen!

I'm not very happy with Gary Windass. I've been promised a belated Christmas kiss for weeks from Eddie and what happens? He gets smacked in the chops by Gary! I shouldn't complain though, the poor kid's in a bad way. According to Eddie, being locked in Owen's van made Gary have a flashback or summat - 'cos the Taliban are famous for locking folk in the back of builder's vans! On a serious note though loveys, that boy needs help, he's a good kid and I feel right sorry for him.

If I was a soldier locked in a builder's van I'd have done summat like them A-Team fellas and built a car or a tank or summat from the bits of wood and tools in the back and smashed me way out, shooting at folk with me special plaster firing splat gun... I think I'd better go loveys... I need a ciggie or summat to calm down... it's strong stuff is this Mellow Birds!

If yer not on tweeter then get on tweeter and tweeter me or follow me tweeters and I'll tweeter you or summat and then we can all tweeter on tweeter... tweetering together. Click on this thing called a LINK to see me tweeters in all their glory!

Laters potatoes... or summat...

Ciaran "I'm more than just a pretty face"

Cutie patootie of the week: Baby Jack's snowsuit with animal feet!

Sunday Canadian Corrie Comments, October 9

Lovely DC Redfearn got the full story about Tracy Barlow and there were lots of suspects. Nobody likes her and everyone had reason to thump her round the head. Deirdre's blinders are firmly on and she's turned her poison darts towards Becky once Tracy woke up after Amy's magic kiss and figured that was the best way to get back at her rival. Obviously the person accused and arrested is never the guilty party. Wasn't she full of fake tears and "fears" when talking to the police? Ken knows damn well Tracy is probably lying and Deirdre is on a new warpath against Becky (and Ken). I actually got the feeling that the Lovely DC Redfearn (LDCR) may have actually believed Becky's protests of innocence. That other cop was a sour faced thing though wasn't she? Good cop, bad cop, I suppose.

Well the truth came out. Claire did it. Surprised? Not me. She often has had a red head's stereotype temper. But she didn't bash Tracy, she pushed her and Tracy hit her head on the bricks. And that other police officer was still bent on playing Bad Cop. Deirdre got a shock when everyone in the pub was on Claire's side and slagging off Tracy! Where's the shame in having your daughter falsely accuse someone? And Tracy? Oh, "I guess i was just dazed and confused because of the head injury" but she sounded pretty certain. She doesn't understand her unreliability as a witness? She lied on the stand at Gail's trial. She lied on the stand at her own. Not proven but it was iffy. Nobody that knows her trusts her (aside from her mother).

So everyone decides she has to do a runner and they all go together and get them fake passports etc. The police are highly suspicious and sit outside in a car across the road. Why didn't anyone in the pub go out to the street to check to see if the police really did leave? You'd think they would be award that it was possible the cops would watch the pub. Graeme would certainly think of it. At one point I thought they were only wanted to get hold of her to drop the charges but I guess not. They were pretty narked that she got away. So why weren't they all over the pub the next day looking for her?

Claire made a successful escape with the little ones in the back of a car Jason was driving. Whose car? Don't suppose it matters. Maybe it was a cab with the rooflight taken off. Was he driving her all the way? But if she goes to France to her mother, won't that be the first place the authorities will look? The other legal consideration is .... Can Claire legally take Joshua out of the country without Doctor Matt Ramsden's consent? Ramsden did have access rights granted even though Ash and Claire are Josh's legal guardians. He could probably have something to say if she abducted his son. Anyway, that's the last of the Peacocks. Good luck, Claire!
Gary probably would have been fine in the job if he hadn't been stuck in the van and his claustrophobia kicked in. Poor lad, it really breaks my heart what he's been through. I can't blame Owen for being concerned that his daughter is dating a man who has a trigger temper at the moment. It looks like Gary isn't going to his physical therapy either. The lad is really in need of help and he's not getting it.

I guess Sally isn't handling Sophie's same sex relationship as well as she thought she would. Mind you, walking in on your teen having sex with any one is going to be difficult. It really does seem like Sophie and Sian really are in love even if Sally doesn't think they'd know what that is at their age. They may not know the kind of grown up love that comes with maturity but they didn't just jump in the sack without taking their time to build a relationship first, either. I liked Eileen giving Sally a few words of wisdom from the mum of one gay child to another and i love it when Rosie is all sisterly to Sophie. And Sally? She took comfort with Tyrone though they didn't actually do anything more than kiss. Didn't stop them both from letting Kevin think the worst. Talk about hypocrite though, How has he got the nerve to shout and thump Tyrone for having sex (so he thinks) with his wife?

The next day after it all hit the fan, Sally continued to allow Kevin to think what he wanted but did you see that smug little smile? Of course they didn't actually do anything but it was none of Kevin's business anyway and revenge or not, he had no business getting in her face about it. Not going to make working at the garage with Tyrone much fun, though. Not after assaulting Tyrone in the middle of the street because he didn't like Sophie telling him off and Sally telling Sophie she didn't have to listen to him. Kevin's revenge was to get a house evaluator in and he's going to sell it out from under Sally and the girls, frozen the bank accounts and filing for divorce. But , oh, you didn't shag Tyrone? Fair enough. Forgive me, raise my love child and forget all about it. No? Too bad, so sad, we're going to play dirty, then. Nice.

It's official. I hate Kevin Webster. He's thoroughly dislikeable. If i was Sally i'd have changed the locks already and she should be on to her solicitor straight away instead of putting up with Kevin running roughshod over the house and putting it up for sale. If her name is on the deed, i don't think he can legally sell it without her agreement.

Laughed at the guy trying to put up the For Sale post. He didn't look fazed at all with the bickering. Said it was all a job hazard. I just imagine so. But woooooooh! Kevin brought up Ian Davenport!!! Sally denied the affair but you could see it written all over her face and Kevin knows darn well she had one.

Did anyone else have a lump in their throat and a tear in their eye when Fiz first got to hold the baby?? I'm a bit surprised Fiz and John don't have to wear full covering body suits when they're visiting Hope. Colin hated enclosed spaces and wanted to be cremated instead of buried. *gulp* I don't understand why Fiz and John are so short of money. Wouldn't Fiz be on Maternity benefits?

Oh, Colin's mother is back on the scene again. Well, she was, anyway.  And her health is even worse now. Chronic heart failure and she really needs to get hold of her son. That's making John feel more guilty than ever so i guess that's why he decided to start going round there and helping her out. She seems to be clinging to John a lot more than necessary. Lonely and ill I suppose. He tells her he has a number for Colin though Colin is in Canada. But the phone number would be a UK mobile number. Would Colin really move to Canada and keep the UK phone with huge roaming charges? I think not but John doesn't think these things through. And she was already told the dial tone/ring would be different but she called it again anyway and ... Busted! John twisted and lied and sweated but it was not to be. He couldn't get out of it when, of course, Colin didn't show up like John said he would, he had to confess to the poor, sick old woman.

He just couldn't keep it in any longer, he was so guilty that he's let the cat out of the bag. Of course the shock brought on a heart attack. She was on her last weeks anyway. John didn't mean to kill her, he just didn't want her to call out to the neighbour at the door. (thought he did keep her heart spray from her as well) He was raving and frantic and he wasn't thinking straight then cut off her airways while she was in heart failure. He didn't intend to and He didn't realize what he was doing until she stopped moving. Things always do come in threes, right? Colin, Charlotte and Joy. Colin's death wasn't John's fault, but he did interfere with the body. Charlotte's death was not really intentional but he was intent on assault when he hurled that hammer. Manslaughter, then. And again for Joy's death. Thus, Soap Law dictates that he has to pay at some point.

John would have been ok if he hadn't gone back to remove any evidence. What's wrong with the police finding out he took some shopping ? Ah because how did he know Joy? Well he used to work with Colin back at Weatherfield high. And that nosy neighbour got stuck in and John was caught up in it all over again, "discovering" the body. There he was, scuttling about in the background, shoving bread and soup leftovers into his pockets and doing the washing up! HA! Why on earth would Fiz think the police might assume he could have killed Joy if he doesn't go forward and say he saw her the day she died?

Peter and Leanne are back from their little trip and Nick was right there. Doesn't sound like the "honeymoon" was all that successful. Maybe their expectations were a bit too high this early in Peter's recovery. Nick keeps digging and pushing Leanne, looking for a crack, looking for attention. He's being underhanded and sneaky as always and Leanne is probably being a bit over protective of Peter. He feels unmanned, useless and embarassed and she doesn't know what to do for him. If she didn't fuss, he would probably feel she didn't care at all. Nick figured out there was something between Carla and Peter and he's determined to use that in yet another sneaky plan to drive that wedge in further. He's going to put booze in Peter's way, knowing how vulnerable he is. Just when you think Nick can't sink any lower! And Peter drank it, the idiot.

Did you see Mary trying to hide from the police and hear that remark about the chainsaw? It's little things like that which are the best things about Mary, little cryptic references to her past. Audrey's met a man in Claudia's salon! Michelle seems to be having trouble with the computer. Someone needs to tell her about spellcheck.

Lloyd has to be chauffeur to Chris and Maria and Maria ended up getting legless on champagne! She did look smashing in that red dress though. And Maria thinks it's ok to date Chris because it was Cheryl that left Chris... Duh, why was that then? Chris looks to be more and more annoyed that Lloyd has moved in on Cheryl. Now the last i knew, Lloyd and Cheryl were "Just friends", she didn't want to have a relationship with him but they're sure cuddled up and cozy now. I suppose a near death disaster would change how you feel. Life's too short and all that. Would have been nice to have some dialogue though, maybe between Steve and Lloyd, just to segue into it. So Chris decides on a plan and the next thing you know, there's stolen goods. And he managed to fire up the rivalry some more with an expensive birthday pressie.

Notice the graduation picture of "Colin"? That looks very like the actual actor, photoshopped younger with a tache. Oh dear, Eileen is going to have an expensive roof repair from the looks of it and Owen is a real pig, isn't he? He's rude and ignorant and aggressive. It's a wonder he keeps any employees at all. Poor Sophie is having a crisis of faith too. It can be hard to reconcile it all when awful things are happening all around you.

Jimi Hendrix and the Corrie theme tune

(This post was originally posted by Sunny Jim on the Coronation Street Blog in August, 2010, reposted with permission.)

I've often wondered and have never been able to make the connection before but Third Stone From The Sun by guitar legend Jimi Hendrix has a repeated refrain that sounds remarkably like Eric Spear's iconic theme tune. A piece in today's Daily Telegraph says:

"Having been shunted endlessly between foster parents and family members after the death of his alcoholic mother, Hendrix loved simple, childlike domestic pleasures: such as playing with a Scalextric racing car set and watching Coronation Street."

So it seems like he was a fan and as far as I'm concerned that's proof enough for me that the track was influenced by the theme tune to our favourite drama.
Finally did you know that the theme tune is also known as 'Capri', because that's where it was composed?

The Laws of Soap Operas

(This post was originally posted by me on the Coronation Street Blog in December, 2010.)

Having watched soaps in various formats for most of my life, I think I've got a pretty good handle on how they work.

Soaps have a code, and they have standard-issue storylines that are used over and over, with variations but the rules behind them generally stay the same. For instance, a murderer will always get caught eventually.

Over on my other blog, I've written about Soap Laws and outlined some random standards that I've observed over the years in categories such as Murder, Love, Babies, Weddings and Death, among others.

Have a read and if you think of some standard soap "rules" do feel free to add them in a comment!

Goodbye Claire Peacock

(This post was originally posted by David (Clinkers) on the Coronation Street Blog January 2011, reposted to this blog with permission.)

And so, then, the feisty Claire Peacock has taken her leave of Weatherfield. It's been a bumpy seven years for the tiny tyrant. Despite working her own kind of magic on the hapless Ashley, Claire was often portrayed as a bit of a harridan. She seemingly carped on about bettering both herself and her family in a way that perhaps only Sally Webster could appreciate. Arguably, Claire was one of t'Street's most irritating characters but for those traits we applaud the performances of Julia Haworth. Her portayal of a bereft widow has been mesmerising and Haworth has fittingly been given a good send-off from the Street.

Will Claire Peacock be remembered warmly by fans in years to come? Or are we glad to see the back of her?

Do you have a "Thing" for Ken Barlow?

(This post was originally posted by Seapenguin on the Coronation Street Blog November, 2010, reposted to this blog with permission.)

Blog reader Ange left a comment on an earlier post, saying that they had "always had a thing for Ken Barlow". Now, this isn't the first time I've heard that said. Quite often, if Coronation Street comes up in a conversation, someone will say that exact phrase. "I've always had a thing for Ken Barlow." Usually, it's a fairly young woman, twenties or thirties, and they aren't referring to the young "windswept" Ken. They're talking about mature Ken. Fatherly Ken. The Ken who's seen a bit of life, from editing the Weatherfield Gazette and having an affair with Steph Beacham, to taking Eccles for a walk and collecting trolleys at Freshco.
Personally, while I really like Ken as a character - in fact, the Barlows are my all-time favourite Street family - I can honestly say I've never actually "had a thing" for him. So I'm curious to know what it is that so attracts. He's not a bad-looking chap, wearing very well for 78, but it seems to be much more than that. Perhaps it's his dependable, fatherly demeanour. Perhaps it's his passion for literature and the arts. Perhaps it's the way he constantly returns to Deirdre after all his affairs and yearnings for the so-called finer things in life. I'm not sure! If anyone can help me out here, I'd be delighted.
By the way - I love this picture of Ken and Deirdre. As far as I'm concerned it captures everything I like about Coronation Street. Two sterling characters, working their way through their umpteenth family crisis.

Mentioning Sally's past

Yup, it's finally happened.  In last night's episode, Kevin finally said what we'd all been thinking: "Ian Davenport!"

Sally Webster's holier-than-thou image as the perfect wife was destroyed with one name.  We all knew, and it seems Kevin did as well, that Sally had carried on an illicit affair in a car showroom with Ian Davenport a few years ago.  He'd forgiven her that indiscretion, and moved on.  Yet here was Sally refusing to accept that Kevin had done much the same thing.

Ian Davenport has long been one of those storylines that we all remember, and knew would come back to haunt Sally one day.  The only surprise for me was that it didn't come from Rosie, who knew all about her mother's affair.  Perhaps she told Kevin?

And John Stape hasn't even spoken yet.  Maybe he should fill Kevin in on that ill-fated pass she made while he was tutoring her...?

Speculation wanted, what's next for Weatherfield?

(This post was originally posted by Ben Karlow on the Coronation Street Blog in December, 2010.)

There are spoilers below regarding characters leaving the show...

The next tantalising question is - what happens next? Phil Collinson and co have the ability to lead the remaining characters in any number of directions. In the coming months, Tyrone could be one to watch. He's a man bereft, having lost everything that was precious to him, within a matter of hours. Will he become a tougher, meaner person as a result? Will he crumble and, if so, who will be there to support him? Rumour has it that such support may come from a surprising quarter.

For Claire and her boys plus Janice Battersby, it's the end of the road. No doubt Claire will begin a new life in France with her mother but what's the motivation for Janice upping sticks?

There's going to be no Corner Shop or Kabin for the forseeable future. Where does that leave Dev, Norris and Rita?

John Stape's web of deceit looks like spinning totally out of control should worrying harridan Charlotte survive (nice one for keeping her alive, scriptwriters!)

One possible storyline that could emerge is the future of the Joinery site. Could there be a clash between the owner, Nick Tilsley and other residents who may wish for it to remain undeveloped?  Maybe there could be some form of memorial garden in its place but will sentiment override commercial interests?

Whatever happens, we can all take comfort from having viewed a week of gripping, emotional drama. With the dust beginning to settle on the cobbles, we now have the intrigue of where 2011 will take the survivors and the bereaved.

Where do you think the characters are heading in the up and coming months?

Sneak Preview of next week's Canadian Corrie, Oct. 10 - 15

Tracy survives. Who will she accuse? Was she telling the truth? (Are you new here?) But when she gets out of hospital, friends of her attacker side against her.  Peter starts drinking again and Nick encourages it. Eileen's roof needs an expensive repair and she crosses a line to get the funds. Owen finds out and plans revenge. Will Eileen go to prison or will she have a few tricks up her own sleeve?  Eileen also packes in her old job and gets a new one.

Gary finally talkes to Quinny's parents and the Windasses get news on the adoption. Gary is set to rejoin his regiment but is he fit (and stable) enough and will his situation affect the adoption? Janice's flat is broken into and Lloyd seems set up to be the culprit. Who really is behind it? New factory client Frank fancies Michelle but Ciaran is leaving. Will she join him?

John has a breakdown and is hospitalized, leaving Fiz to cope on her own as Hope has another crisis. Kevin tries to sell the house but Sally continues to sabotage his efforts.

John Stape, Serial Idiot

(This post was originally posted by Chewy and me on the Coronation Street Blog in January 2011.)

He's been dubbed 'Frank Spencer with a bad temper' - Poor John hasn't had it easy, what with people randomly dropping dead around him at inconvenient times.

He must be the only serial killer/ex-kidnapper in soap that people feel sorry for, he obviously goes into things with the best of intentions, but somehow it always ends up going wrong for the poor soul.

I bet he wished he just stayed a drama teacher now. I have to wonder though, what does the future hold for the poor guy? I'm covinced there will be another death before he is discovered.

And further to that, Come walk with me through a brief history of the shenanigans of John Stape, former English Teacher of this parish. Try to follow the twists and turns in his  Coronation Street journey around the bend to madness for surely, that is where he is heading.

With a third death at his feet, he's about to snap under the weight of the guilt. I'm sure it won't be long before he's a gibbering heap muttering "I only wanted to teach!" Read about it here.

Pictures: Corrie cast at post-live party and Gala dinner

(This post was originally posted by Flaming Nora on the Coronation Street Blog December, 2010, reposted to this blog with permission.)

After the gruelling one hour long live Coronation Street episode, members of the Corrie cast let their hair down at a party and celebrated in style.

There's pictures online of some of the cast arriving at the party. Have a look at some of the pictures here.

On Friday 10 December, there was a Coronation Street 50th dinner for cast and crew and various others.

There's a gorgeous gallery on the Manchester Evening News website of Coronation Street stars past and present.  They came together at Manchester’s Hilton Hotel for that gala dinner to celebrate the success of a 50th anniversary week to remember.

Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone Dobbs, said: "I'd like to say thanks to people for watching, and I hope they’ve enjoyed it over the years."

Producer Phil Collinson said: "We just hope the fans have enjoyed this week. The response has been amazing."
