It's time to take a look back at some of the icons from 1970s Coronation Street and with a bit of research (aka Google) and help from Corriepedia and Corrie.net, let's see where the actors who created those characters are now.
It's been a tremendously sad exercise researching which of the icons from the 1970s to cover. Reading through my Coronation Street books to gain inspiration in deciding which of the actors I would like to mention in this blog post, it's very sad how many of them are no longer with us. I am therefore only including those actors who are still very much alive and with us. I'll be running of these blog posts each day looking at my favourite Corrie icons from the 1970s all the way up to the 1990s.
Julie Goodyear who played Bet Lynch
After leaving Corrie, Julie worked as a TV presenter and radio DJ. She's also become no stranger to reality TV appearing on I'm Famous and Frightened, Celebrity Fit Club, Road Raja, Age Swap, Celebrity Penthouse and Celebrity Stars in Their Eyes as Marlene Dietrich.
In 2002 she returned to Coronation Street for a short stint.
She had a small role in the British film Tug of War (2006) and in October 2006 played a brief role in Channel 4's Hollyoaks as Mrs. Temple, owner of a B&B. She also participated in a Coronation Street special of Come Dine With Me.
Her 2006 autobiography Just Julie entered the best-sellers lists.
In October 2009 it was confirmed that she would be starring in Calendar Girls onstage. She appeared in the show for about three weeks before dropping out due to illness.
In 2012, Julie became a housemate on the tenth series of Celebrity Big Brother on Channel 5. She also joined the ill-fated Corrie musical Street of Dreams.
In 2013, Julie appeared on Piers Morgan's Life Stories show. She has appeared in pantomimes, commercials and most recently did a public appearance at B&Q in Stockport. There are some great pictures here and by all accounts, she was on excellent form, cracking innuendos and interacting with fans.
Most recently, Julie spoke of her devastation at the passing of Corrie co-star Roy Barraclough on June 1 2017, who played her on-screen husband Alec Gilroy. Julie also attended Roy Barraclough's funeral to pay her respects to her friend.
