Canadian content on Corrie this week
You gotta love it when there's a bit of Canadian content on Coronation Street. Remember when Big Jim McDonald used to wear the ratty old Blue Jays shirt? That belonged to the actor who got it when he was working here once. There also used to be a little Canadian flag sticker on the cash register in the Kabin for years.
This week on Corrie there was another Canadian reference although you wouldn't really have known about it. It was pretty subtle and only a few people knew it. Now the truth can be told. On Monday night, wee Maxie bragged to Amy that he had a Rastamouse book. Rastamouse is a children's program produced in Wales and there is a lot of related merchandise, toys and books that goes along with the series. There's a Canadian company right here where I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia called DHX Media and they have the rights to distribute and license the merchandise, so says the business section of the local newspaper, The Chronicle Herald. Having it mentioned in a popular show like Corrie helps get the name out there.
Yes it's kind of like product placement but it's subtle and that's great publicity for the Canadian company if it helps sell a few more books!
And in other news, the rules for television in the UK have changed and they are now going to allow proper brand product placement as a way of helping to support the television shows. The first evidence of this will appear in Dev's shop where the bank machine will show a real UK bank logo and name (Nationwide Bank). We won't see it for a few months yet but keep an eye out for it.
