Denise Black, who plays Denise Osbourne in Coronation Street, was interviewed on ITV's Loose Women yesterday about her return to the show.
It was a good interview and Denise said something about her role in Corrie that I'd completely forgotten. She said that when she was brought into Corrie originally, her character wasn't supposed to get together with Ken, it wasn't what had been planned for Denise. But Anne Kirkbride, who played Deirdre, was unwell and away from the show. And while she was away, Denise was moved into the slot of Ken's love interest. Hence their affair and then of course, along came Daniel.
The Loose Women called Denise Osbourne 'a saucy minx' which I think is a good description of Denise when she was younger, with Ken.
Denise said she's getting a lot of love on social media and thinks that there's more mileage in the character too. This fan certainly hopes so.
She said that when she was away from the show, she starred in the stage musical Sister Act. When the show came to Manchester, she delivered invitations to her former Corrie cast members to come and see the show. On the enevelopes with the invitations in them, she'd written "by hand". On the night of the show, Barbara Knox came to the stage door to give Denise a first-night card and she handed it over saying "by hand and by foot". I love these little glimpses into life behind the scenes.
Speaking of scenes, Loose Women teased us with a clip from next week's Corrie which shows Denise in the hair salon chatting to Audrey and Rita. Ooh, it's bitter! Lots of good stuff to come.
