(This post was originally posted by me on the Coronation Street Blog in December 2011.)
Here at Coronation Street Blog Towers we have been receiving reports of a tragedy set to hit our beloved cobbles.
Michelle Collins, who plays annoying bar manager Stella Price, appeared on the Lorraine show this morning and revealed that Stella and Karl will be buying the Rovers Return when Steve sells it to pay off his debts. (Well there's a surprise)
They will initially have problems getting the cash together: "They struggle to get the money together to get a mortgage. And they're turned down by a few people because they're 'too old'. But then you'll see what happens."
So what's it to be? Windfall from a dead relative? Lottery win? One of Karl's yankees coming up? At least with an inveterate gambler in the picture we have the grain of hope that Karl will get them into so much debt that it all goes wrong and Stella has to leave the Street forever. But I'll not be holding my breath as the producers seem to be convinced that the character of Stella is successful. Either that or they've invested so much in the character that they can't back down now.
Michelle also had this to say: "I'd love to create another iconic character, I think Stella seems to be a bit like the Mother Teresa of Corrie - suddenly she's everybody's agony aunt. They're injecting a little bit of steeliness into her. I think people have got to like you first, but now she gets involved in some big storylines. The love triangle between Carla, Leanne and Peter, she's very much involved in that."
I'm sorry Michelle but if Stella were going to be an iconic character then there'd be some sign of it by now and there isn't.
